Chương 10

“No.”

The admission sat between them.

Marlene sighed.

“I miss you,” she said. “Also, legal is making me ask terrible questions.”

Sofia’s voice softened. “I miss complaining about legal with you.”

“I can schedule that whenever you’re ready.”

The company eventually allowed a gradual remote return. Sofia worked two hours the first day and spent most of them staring at a design file she had created before the wedding.

She could not remember why she had chosen blue buttons.

She cried over the buttons, then became angry because crying over interface colors seemed ridiculous.

Trauma did not respect hierarchy.

It arrived while she brushed her teeth, waited for an elevator, or heard women laughing in a restaurant. It ignored the moments when she expected it and ambushed her during ordinary ones.

Alexander began attending a support group for estranged parents.

He did not tell us. I found out because he left a workbook in my car after driving us to Maya’s office. The cover read LISTENING WITHOUT DEFENDING.

I held it up.

“Military issue?”

He took it from me.

“It’s not for you.”

“I assumed it wasn’t. You defend yourself beautifully with me.”

He put the workbook in his jacket.

Sofia had seen it too.

That evening, she called him and asked why he left after the divorce.

He came to the condo. They sat on the unfinished balcony because the patio furniture had been delivered to the hotel for the honeymoon suite and never returned.

I stayed inside, close enough to see them but not hear every word.

Alexander did not blame me, though he could have. He said he had accepted an overseas command because work offered rules and home offered no way to be right. He said he kept telling himself that Sofia needed consistency, then provided it through money because money did not argue back.

“You bought me an apartment instead of apologizing,” she said.

“Yes.”

“You thought that was enough?”

“No. I thought it was the only thing you would accept.”

“You never asked.”

“I was afraid you’d say no.”

She looked at him for a long time.

“That sounds weak.”

“It was.”

“I wanted you to fight for me.”

“I confused fighting with forcing. By the time I understood the difference, you had stopped answering.”

“You could have kept calling.”

“I should have.”

“You could have come to the wedding.”

“You told me not to.”

“You always ignored me when it benefited you.”

He looked out at the city.

“That is also true.”

She became irritated.

“Stop agreeing.”

He smiled faintly.

“Your mother says that.”

“I know where I get it.”

Their relationship did not repair on the balcony. It became honest enough to remain damaged without pretending the damage was permanent.

The strongest evidence arrived because Carmen made a mistake that had nothing to do with stupidity.

She tried to save herself.

Prosecutors offered reduced charges to several of the women in exchange for truthful cooperation. Carmen told relatives that anyone who accepted would be cut off from the family businesses, inheritance, and community.

Then she blamed Ana publicly.

Through her attorney, Carmen claimed the younger woman had organized the “confrontation,” misunderstood instructions, and escalated events while Carmen tried to calm everyone.

Ana was twenty-seven, worked in payroll for one of the banquet halls, and lived in an apartment owned by Carmen’s brother. She had spent her life dependent on the family she feared.

When Carmen isolated her, Ana’s fear changed direction.

Ana’s attorney contacted Detective Grant.

The phone used in the honeymoon suite had automatically uploaded a forty-three-minute video to cloud storage. Ana had deleted it from the device the next morning but had not known a copy remained.

She had begun recording before entering the room because Carmen instructed her to capture Sofia’s “voluntary agreement” to transfer the condo. The video showed the folder, the pen, Carmen’s demands, and Sofia’s repeated refusals.

When the first slap came, Ana lowered the phone.

The image showed carpet and shoes.

The audio continued.

We listened at Maya’s office after prosecutors confirmed Sofia could hear it.

Carmen’s voice sounded almost bored.

“You will sign.”

“No.”

“You married into this family.”

“I married Javier.”

“Same thing.”

Then the first slap.

The sound was smaller than I expected.

The women spoke over one another. Someone laughed. Someone told Sofia to stop being dramatic. Sofia cried out when they twisted her wrist.

Ana whispered, “Maybe this is enough.”

Carmen answered, “Keep recording.”

Minutes later, Javier’s voice came through the door.

“What’s taking so long?”

“She’s stubborn,” a woman said.

“Just don’t hit her face too much. People will notice tomorrow.”

There it was.

No distortion. No ambiguity. His voice, casual and irritated.

Sofia sat perfectly still.

The recording continued. Carmen threatened to have Elena evicted, though she had no power to do so. She said Alexander had abandoned Sofia and would never return. She called the condo “the price of admission.”

Javier entered briefly.

“You’re making this harder than it has to be,” he told Sofia.

“You said you loved me.”

“I do.”

“Then open the door.”

A pause.

“Sign first.”

Alexander left the room before the recording ended.

I found him in the stairwell, one hand on the rail.

“He delivered her to them,” he said.

It was not a dramatic declaration. His voice sounded exhausted.

“Yes.”

“I keep thinking about the hallway.”

“What about it?”

“He stood there.”

“He did.”

“I spent years absent from her life. He was ten feet away.”

“This isn’t the time to compete over who failed her more.”

His head lifted.

“I’m not.”

“You are. You make guilt into a contest because winning guilt lets you stay in control.”

He sat on the step.

For once, he did not answer.

The recording changed the criminal case. Javier was arrested two days later. Carmen surrendered through counsel. The women who had participated faced different charges based on what evidence showed each had done.

Ana entered a cooperation agreement. Beatriz, who had held Sofia’s wrist, denied everything until the video captured Carmen calling her name. Two women claimed they had believed the encounter was a traditional family discussion and became frightened after violence began. The recording contradicted parts of their stories but supported others.
