Chương 8

Daniel raised a hand.

Mark came over immediately.

“Hotel?”

Daniel asked.

Mark nodded.

“Mine.”

“Can Mia stay with you and Lisa for a little while?”

Mia stiffened.

“No.”

Daniel turned.

“I need to make some calls.”

“I can be quiet.”

“It isn’t about being quiet.”

“Then what?”

He hesitated.

There was no good child-sized version of what he needed to say.

“I need to talk to people about the company.”

“You can do that with me there.”

“Mia.”

Her jaw tightened.

For the first time, he saw anger in her face.

“You said we stay together.”

Daniel flinched.

His brother looked away.

Daniel crouched again.

“You’re right.”

Mia’s eyes shone.

He continued.

“I said that, and I meant it.”

“Then don’t send me away.”

“I’m trying to keep you out of the parts that are going to be ugly.”

“They’re already ugly.”

He had no answer.

Mia looked toward Vanessa.

“I don’t want to be with her.”

“You won’t be.”

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

She searched his face.

“Really?”

“Really.”

Her shoulders dropped slightly.

Daniel rubbed his thumb over the back of her hand.

“We can go to Uncle Mark’s hotel together.”

She nodded.

“And you call people there?”

“Yes.”

“And I can sit somewhere else?”

“If you want.”

“I’ll wear headphones.”

Mark cleared his throat.

“I have excellent hotel headphones.”

Mia looked at him.

“No, you don’t.”

Mark’s mouth twitched.

“Correct.”

It was the first almost-normal exchange of the morning.

Daniel felt guilty for appreciating it.

Then Vanessa approached.

The older deputy moved with her.

“He said I can speak to you if you agree.”

Daniel stood.

Mia immediately stepped behind him.

Vanessa noticed.

The pain in her face was real.

That made everything worse.

Daniel said, “What?”

She looked around at the guests.

Most were pretending not to watch.

“Not here.”

“No.”

“Daniel.”

“You don’t get private.”

Her jaw tightened.

“I’m not asking for secrecy.”

“That’s exactly what you’re asking for.”

She inhaled slowly.

“I need to tell you something before Eric does.”

Daniel stared at her.

Behind Vanessa, Eric looked toward them.

The deputy beside him said something and he faced forward again.

Daniel felt dread settle through his stomach.

“What?”

Vanessa glanced at Mia.

Daniel said, “If it involves her, she hears it.”

“It doesn’t.”

“Then say it.”

Vanessa closed her eyes for a moment.

“When I signed those option papers, Eric told me they were temporary.”

Daniel waited.

“He said they would revert after the wedding.”

“Why after the wedding?”

Vanessa’s eyes opened.

“Because he needed me legally connected to you.”

Daniel’s skin went cold.

Thomas, several yards away, turned his head.

Even from there, he had heard.

Daniel spoke very slowly.

“You’re already legally connected to him.”

“Yes.”

“So why did Eric need you connected to me?”

Vanessa’s hands began to tremble.

“To trigger the beneficiary language.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What beneficiary language?”

“In your trust.”

He did not move.

Mia tightened her grip on his hand.

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

May you like

“The one that gives your spouse temporary voting authority if you become incapacitated.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa without blinking. The words were ordinary enough to belong in an estate-planning meeting, and monstrous enough to rearrange everything that had happened that morning.“If I become incapacitated.”Vanessa nodded once.Mia looked up at him.“What does that mean?”Daniel kept his eyes on Vanessa.“It means if I get very sick or hurt and can’t make decisions for myself.”Mia’s grip tightened.Vanessa looked at her and then immediately away.Daniel noticed.“What exactly did Eric tell you?”“That your trust named your legal spouse as an emergency voting proxy.”“My trust names a spouse after verification.”“I didn’t know that.”“You didn’t know a lot of things you were signing.”Her face tightened.“That’s fair.”The admission irritated him more than an argument would have.He turned toward Eric.“Is that why you needed the wedding?”Eric had gone pale. The older deputy watched him closely.“It was one layer.”Daniel laughed under his breath.“One layer.”“The board challenge might not survive.”“So you wanted a backup.”Eric said nothing.Daniel’s stomach turned.“What was supposed to happen to me?”Vanessa took a step forward.“Nothing.”Daniel looked at her.“Nothing?”“Nothing physical.”The deputy’s posture changed.Daniel felt Mia’s hand go rigid in his.He lowered his voice.“What does that mean?”Vanessa swallowed.“Eric said the pressure might make you step aside voluntarily.”“That’s not what I asked.”“I know.”“What was supposed to happen if I didn’t?”Eric spoke from behind the deputy.“There was no plan to hurt you.”Daniel turned.“No one asked you yet.”The deputy said, “Actually, I am asking now.”Eric looked at him.“There was no plan involving violence.”“Was there a plan involving incapacitation?”“No.”Vanessa closed her eyes.Eric saw it.His face changed.“Vanessa.”She shook her head.“Don’t.”Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.“Vanessa.”She looked at him.“There was a doctor.”The deputy stepped closer.“What doctor?”“I don’t know his name.”Eric said sharply, “That is not what happened.”Vanessa spun toward him.“You said you could get someone to certify stress-related incapacity.”“That was hypothetical.”“You had paperwork.”“Draft paperwork.”“You showed it to me.”The deputy lifted a hand.“Stop.”Nobody did.Daniel moved toward Eric. The deputy stepped between them.Daniel stopped. His voice was almost calm.“You were going to have me declared incompetent.”Eric shook his head.“No.”“You just needed a doctor conveniently standing by.”“No.”“And my new wife holding voting authority.”“No.”“And your coalition controlling the company.”Eric’s jaw tightened.“It was leverage.”Daniel stared at him.“That word again.”“It was supposed to force a negotiation.”“By threatening to take my company and my legal capacity at the same time.”“You weren’t supposed to know.”Silence followed.Eric’s expression changed as soon as the sentence left him.Daniel nodded once.“There.”Eric looked away.“That was the first honest thing you’ve said.”The deputy reached for the papers on the pew.Eric moved instinctively.“Don’t touch those.”The deputy looked at him.Eric stopped.“Why?”“Some of them are privileged.”“That’s a conversation you can have with your lawyer.”“They contain confidential company information.”“You locked a room full of witnesses and demanded a signature.”Eric’s mouth closed. The deputy gathered the stack without reading it and handed it to his partner.“Bag these.”Eric’s shoulders lowered. The younger deputy took the papers.Vanessa watched them disappear into a clear evidence bag.Daniel saw fear return to her face. Not the fear of exposure.Something sharper.“Eric.”He ignored her.“Eric, what else is in there?”Daniel looked between them.Eric still did not answer.Vanessa moved closer.“What else did you bring?”The deputy blocked her.“Ma’am, stay back.”She did.Barely.Daniel’s mother rose from the pew.“Mia should leave.”This time Daniel did not argue.Mia did.“No.”His mother bent toward her.“Sweetheart.”“No.”Daniel crouched.“Mia.”Her eyes filled again.“You promised.”“I promised you wouldn’t be alone.”“You said together.”“I know.”“You keep changing it.”The accusation was quiet. That made it hurt more.Daniel looked at his mother. Then at Mark. Then back at Mia.“You’re right.”She waited.“I’m not sending you away.”His mother’s mouth tightened.Daniel continued.“But you’re going to sit with Grandma near the side room while I finish this.”Mia looked toward Vanessa.“Can she come there?”“No.”“Can Eric?”“No.”“Can you?”“Yes.”She considered it.“Okay.”Daniel’s mother led her toward the small room beside the altar.Mia turned twice to make sure he was still there. Both times he raised a hand. The second time she raised hers back. When the door closed behind her, Daniel felt something inside him loosen and then immediately tighten again. He turned.Vanessa was crying now.Silently.One tear had cut through the makeup beneath her left eye.She wiped it away angrily.“Don’t look at me like that.”Daniel almost asked how he was looking.Instead he said, “What else is in the papers?”“I don’t know.”“You seemed worried.”“Because Eric lies.”Eric let out a bitter laugh.Vanessa stared at him.“You do.”“So do you.”“I lied because I was scared.”“You lied because it was useful.”Her face hardened.“And you used that.”“Yes.”The answer surprised everyone.Eric looked at Daniel.“I used her fear.”Vanessa went still.Eric continued.“She thought you were going to sell the company, dump the board, move money into a trust she couldn’t access, and eventually leave her.”Daniel stared.“I never planned any of that.”“I know that now.”“Now?”“I saw the correspondence with Marston this morning.”Daniel’s pulse thudded.“How?”Eric hesitated.“That doesn’t matter.”“It matters to me.”“I had access.”“To my email?”“To the board archive.”“The Marston correspondence wasn’t in the board archive.”Eric said nothing.Daniel felt another piece settle into place.“You’ve been in my private account.”“No.”“My assistant’s?”Eric looked away.Daniel’s anger sharpened.“Whose?”Vanessa whispered, “Mine.”Daniel turned slowly. She lowered her gaze.“I forwarded messages.”“What messages?”“Things I thought mattered.”“For how long?”She wrapped her arms around herself.“A few months.”Daniel stared at her.“What does a few mean?”“Since January.”Nine months. The number arrived before the emotion did.Nine months of dinners.Nine months of passwords entered while she sat beside him.Nine months of leaving his laptop on the kitchen island because this was the person he intended to marry.“What did you send?”“Emails.”“What emails?”“Business things.”“What business things?”“I don’t remember every one.”“Try.”She flinched.“Messages from Marston.”“What else?”“Calendar screenshots.”“What else?”“A few drafts.”“What drafts?”“Contracts.”Daniel closed his eyes for one second. When he opened them, the chapel had not changed.Rain still streaked the windows.Flowers still surrounded the altar.A fallen petal lay on the pale floor near his shoe.Someone’s phone vibrated twice in a pew and was silenced.Normal things continued inside an impossible morning. He looked at Eric.“You built this from stolen information.”Eric bristled.“Information relevant to the company.”“Taken from my private communications.”“You kept material information from senior leadership.”“I kept an unsolicited acquisition inquiry private until I knew whether it deserved attention.”“You hid it.”“From you, yes.”Eric’s face tightened.“Why?”Daniel laughed once.“Because you turn every possibility into a war.”Eric’s jaw flexed.“You trusted me for six years.”“I trusted you to advise me.”“I did more than advise you.”“There it is again.”Daniel stepped closer.“You think contribution equals ownership.”“I think contribution should mean something.”“It did.”“Not enough.”Daniel nodded slowly.“Then you should have left.”Eric stared. The words seemed to hit harder than shouting.“You should have resigned.”Daniel continued.“You should have sued me if you thought compensation was unfair.”Eric’s eyes darkened.“You should have started your own company.”He looked toward Vanessa.“You should not have built a scheme around my fiancée’s fear.”Vanessa whispered, “I wasn’t just afraid.”Daniel looked at her.“What else?”Her lips pressed together.“I needed security.”“You had security.”“No.”“You lived in my house.”“Your house.”“I paid for everything.”“Exactly.”Daniel stared. She shook her head.“You don’t get it.”“Then make me.”“I had nothing that was mine.”Thomas looked at the floor.Vanessa noticed him.Her face hardened.“I had a business fail.”Thomas said nothing.“I owed people.”Still nothing.“I was starting over.”Daniel’s voice softened despite himself.“You told me those debts were settled.”“Most were.”“How much?”She looked away.“How much, Vanessa?”“About one hundred and thirty thousand.”Daniel felt no dramatic shock.Just exhaustion.“Personal?”“Business guarantees.”“And Thomas’s forty-eight?”“Separate.”“So almost one hundred eighty thousand.”She said nothing.Daniel rubbed his forehead.“You were planning to marry me with nearly two hundred thousand dollars in undisclosed debt while still married to someone else.”“I was going to handle it.”“How?”Vanessa looked at Eric. That was enough.Daniel nodded.“Shares.”She whispered, “Options.”“Same answer today.”“I didn’t think it would hurt you.”“You thought taking a piece of my company without telling me wouldn’t hurt me?”“I thought I would be your wife.”“But you weren’t.”Her eyes flashed.“I would have been if Thomas had signed.”Thomas looked up.“You never sent anything.”“I know.”“Why?”Vanessa stared at him.For the first time, the answer did not come quickly.Daniel watched her search for one. Then stop. Her shoulders lowered.“Because if the divorce finalized before the wedding, Eric said the trust review might flag the timing.”Eric closed his eyes. The deputy looked at him.Daniel felt something inside him go very still.“So you stayed married on purpose.”Vanessa shook her head.“No.”“Yes.”“I delayed it.”“You delayed your divorce to manipulate my trust.”“I was trying to make the paperwork line up.”Daniel stared at her.She heard herself. Her face crumpled.“Oh God.”Thomas gave a quiet laugh without humor.Vanessa turned on him.“You think this is funny?”“No.”“You always loved seeing me fail.”Thomas’s face hardened.“No, Vanessa.”He held up the marriage certificate.“I came here because I finally got tired of helping you pretend.”The deputy stepped toward him.“Sir, lower that.”Thomas did.Daniel looked at Vanessa.Something about her had changed. Not because she looked less beautiful. She still did. That was almost cruel. The gown still fit perfectly. The pearl earrings still caught the gray light. But the person he had arranged his future around seemed suddenly farther away than Thomas standing across the chapel.“Did you ever intend to tell me?”Vanessa’s mouth trembled.“Yes.”“When?”“After the honeymoon.”Daniel looked at her for a long time.“Which part?”She did not answer.“The husband?”Silence.“The debt?”Silence.“The emails?”Her eyes closed.“The shares?”A tear slid down her cheek.Daniel nodded.“So none of it.”“I loved you.”He looked toward the side room where Mia waited. Then back at Vanessa.“I believe you.”She opened her eyes.Hope appeared so quickly that it hurt to see.Daniel continued.“And I don’t think that saves anything.”The hope disappeared.Outside, another vehicle pulled into the gravel drive.Red and blue light briefly washed across the rain-streaked chapel windows. The younger deputy returned from the entrance and spoke quietly to his partner. The older deputy’s expression changed. He looked at Eric. Then at Vanessa. Then at Daniel.“Mr. Hartwell.”Daniel turned.“We need to talk privately.”Daniel glanced toward Mia’s door. The deputy followed his gaze.“This concerns your daughter too.”Daniel’s chest tightened.“What concerns her?”The deputy hesitated only a fraction.“One of the documents we just collected names her.”
