Chương 2

“The document.”

“It isn’t real.”

“Then give it to me.”

For several seconds, she did nothing.

That was the moment Daniel’s confusion began changing shape.

If the paper were ridiculous, Vanessa would have handed it over.

She would have rolled her eyes.

She would have made some dry remark about his family’s talent for catastrophe.

Instead she was holding it as if possession mattered.

Daniel extended his hand.

Vanessa looked at him, then at Mia.

Her fingers closed.

The paper crumpled.

“Vanessa.”

She tore downward.

A gasp moved through the chapel.

The tear did not go cleanly through the folded document, so Vanessa jerked her hands apart again.

The paper split.

Mia made a small sound.

Daniel stared at the pieces.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“It’s fake.”

“Then why destroy it?”

“Because this is our wedding.”

“No.”

His voice came out quieter than hers.

“This was our wedding.”

Vanessa’s lips parted.

Daniel stepped backward.

He nearly collided with the flower-covered railing behind him.

The officiant cleared his throat and then apparently regretted it.

One of Vanessa’s friends stood from the second pew.

“Maybe everybody should take five minutes.”

“No one asked you, Claire,” Vanessa said.

Claire slowly sat down.

Daniel rubbed his thumb across the ring.

His daughter had moved close enough that her shoulder touched his hip.

He put a hand there without looking down.

“Is there another copy?”

Mia nodded.

Vanessa stared at her.

The nanny’s mouth tightened with something almost like satisfaction.

“Where?”

Daniel asked.

Mia glanced toward the back of the chapel.

“With the video man.”

Daniel followed her gaze.

The wedding videographer stood beside his equipment with the expression of someone wishing profoundly to become invisible.

“What does he have to do with this?”

Vanessa asked.

Nobody answered.

Mia’s nanny did.

“Your daughter was smarter than the adults.”

Daniel disliked the sentence immediately.

Not because it was false, but because he suspected it was true.

He looked at Mia.

“What did you do?”

“I showed him.”

“The paper?”

“And the video.”

Vanessa went still.

Daniel felt Mia’s shoulder shift beneath his hand.

“What video?”

Mia’s eyes lifted to him.

“I didn’t know what it meant.”

“That’s okay.”

“I thought maybe it was normal.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Mia, enough.”

Daniel moved his daughter behind him.

The action happened before he decided to do it.

Vanessa stopped.

Something passed across her face.

Hurt, perhaps.

Or fury at being placed on the other side of him.

The videographer bent toward his laptop.

Vanessa noticed.

“No.”

He looked up.

“I was asked to preserve the files.”

“By whom?”

The nanny raised her hand slightly.

“Me.”

“You had no right.”

“I had a frightened child in a bathroom showing me a marriage certificate and asking if her father was about to do something illegal.”

Several guests began talking at once.

Daniel heard his mother say his name.

Someone farther back stood and headed toward the aisle.

The videographer touched a control.

The large screen used earlier for photographs of Daniel and Vanessa flickered from black to an image of the empty chapel recorded that morning.

“Turn that off,” Vanessa said.

Daniel did not look at her.

The footage advanced.

Workers carried flowers.

A coordinator crossed the aisle holding a clipboard.

Vanessa appeared near the altar in a silk robe, her wedding gown not yet on.

Then Eric walked into the frame.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

Eric Caldwell had worked with Daniel for almost six years.

He handled acquisitions, contracts, and the sort of negotiations Daniel disliked because Eric could sit through three hours of silence without needing to fill it.

Eric was supposed to be in Chicago.

Daniel had received a text from him yesterday wishing him luck.

On the screen, Vanessa glanced toward the chapel entrance and pulled Eric behind a timber column.

There was no audio from that camera angle.

There did not need to be.

Eric handed her a thick packet.

Vanessa opened it.

She signed something.

Then she touched his arm and said several words Daniel could not hear.

Eric smiled.

Not warmly.

Familiarly.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

“What did you sign?”

Her face had lost its careful bridal calm.

“Business paperwork.”

“At my wedding?”

“It isn’t what you think.”

“What do I think?”

She said nothing.

That silence landed harder than an answer.

The chapel doors opened.

Cold gray daylight spilled across the floor.

A tall man in a dark overcoat entered carrying a document inside a clear protective sleeve.

Vanessa looked toward him.

Her entire body seemed to contract.

The stranger stopped just inside the doors.

Rain shone on his shoulders.

He looked at Vanessa for a long second before raising the document.

“I have the original.”

Daniel felt Mia’s fingers close around the back of his tuxedo jacket.

“Who are you?”

The stranger’s gaze moved to him.

Before he could answer, one of the double doors swung shut.

Then the other.

A metallic click followed.

Several guests turned.

Eric stood beside the lock.

He wore the same gray suit from the recording, with a dark burgundy tie and rain darkening his hair.

Daniel stared at him.

Eric reached inside his jacket.

He removed a stack of papers.

His expression was almost apologetic.

Almost.

“Nobody leaves until you sign.”

For several seconds, Daniel could not make Eric’s words fit inside the room.

The man by the doors was the same man who had eaten takeout in Daniel’s office at midnight, argued over valuation models, remembered Mia’s birthday, and once driven forty miles back to return a set of keys Daniel had left on a conference table.

Now Eric had locked a chapel full of people inside and was holding papers as if this were a meeting Daniel had arrived late for.

“Unlock the doors.”

Eric glanced at the guests.

A few had already risen from their pews.

“Sit down, please.”

Nobody did.

Daniel’s brother stepped into the aisle.

May you like

“You’ve got about five seconds before I put you through that door.”

Eric looked at him without moving.
