Chương 4

A long silence followed.

Then Claire said, “Her name is Rachel Bell.”

“I know that.”

“She was involved before Lily came to us.”

“Before Lily came to us?”

The phrase caught his attention.

Not before Lily was born.

Not before we had Lily.

Before Lily came to us.

“What does that mean?”

Claire looked away.

Daniel felt the answer before she gave it.

And he hated that.

Because a part of him had already started building the truth from pieces he did not want to recognize.

“She was there when Lily was born.”

The room seemed to shrink.

“Claire.”

“I was going to tell you.”

He laughed softly.

The sound was empty.

“You keep saying that.”

“I was.”

“When?”

She rubbed her forehead.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s not good enough.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

His voice rose.

Not because he wanted to yell.

Because he felt something breaking and had nowhere else to put it.

“You let me believe—”

“I never lied about loving her.”

The sentence stopped him.

Claire’s eyes filled, but she did not cry.

Not yet.

“I never lied about that.”

Daniel looked toward the nursery.

The door was slightly open.

Inside was the room they had painted together before Lily arrived.

They had spent an entire Saturday arguing over shades of yellow.

Claire wanted something warmer.

Daniel wanted something brighter.

They ended up choosing neither.

They chose a color in the middle because that was what they always did.

Compromise.

Except now he wondered how many compromises had been made without him knowing.

“Did you adopt her?” he asked.

Claire did not answer immediately.

That was enough.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The answer had been sitting in front of him.

The paperwork.

The missing baby photos.

The way Claire avoided certain questions about the hospital.

He had noticed pieces.

He just never connected them.

“Did we adopt our daughter?”

Claire whispered, “Yes.”

The word hurt because it was simple.

Because it was true.

Because it did not erase the years they had lived.

But it changed the shape of them.

Daniel sat down across from her.

“When were you going to tell me?”

Claire looked at the floor.

“I thought I had more time.”

“More time for what?”

“For her to be older.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“For her to understand.”

Daniel stared at her.

“She’s a baby.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Claire swallowed.

“Because I was afraid.”

That was the first honest thing she had said all morning.

Daniel noticed.

Not because it fixed anything.

Because it finally sounded like her.

“What were you afraid of?”

Claire pressed her fingers together.

“That you would look at her differently.”

The answer made him angry.

Then sad.

Then angry again.

“You thought I would stop loving my own daughter?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I thought you would start wondering.”

“Wondering what?”

Claire looked toward the nursery.

“Whether we were enough.”

Daniel did not speak.

Because that was not the answer he expected.

He expected paperwork.

A mistake.

A secret arrangement.

Something cold and simple.

Instead, he saw a fear he understood.

A fear he had carried too.

The fear that love was something fragile.

Something that could disappear if the wrong truth was uncovered.

His phone was still in his hand.

Rachel had not hung up.

He lifted it.

“Are you still there?”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at him.

“Daniel.”

He ignored her.

“Why are you calling me?”

Rachel took a breath.

“Because I heard Claire found the note.”

“How?”

“Because I left it.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed her to stop pretending this could stay hidden.”

Claire stood quickly.

“Rachel, don’t.”

Daniel looked at her.

That single word told him more than the conversation had.

Claire knew Rachel well.

Maybe better than she admitted.

“You knew she might call?”

Claire’s face changed.

“I knew she might try.”

“Might try?”

“She has been contacting me.”

Rachel answered before Claire could.

“Because I have been trying to see Lily.”

Daniel turned toward the phone.

“When?”

“Since last year.”

His stomach dropped.

He looked at Claire.

She did not deny it.

The silence between them was unbearable.

“You told me no one was looking for her.”

Claire’s eyes closed.

“I didn’t know what to say.”

“You could have said the truth.”

“I thought I was protecting her.”

“From what?”

Claire’s voice cracked.

“From losing everything.”

Rachel spoke quietly.

“Daniel, I’m not asking you to trust me.”

The honesty surprised him.

“I know you don’t know me.”

“Then what are you asking?”

“I’m asking you to look at the records.”

“What records?”

“The ones Claire never showed you.”

Daniel looked at his wife.

Claire’s face had gone completely still.

“What records?”

Nobody answered.

That was the moment Daniel understood something important.

Not the whole truth.

Not even close.

But enough to know that there was another layer.

Claire had not just hidden Rachel.

She had hidden evidence.

“Where are they?” he asked.

Claire shook her head.

“Daniel.”

“Where are they?”

She stood there for several seconds.

Then she walked to the bedroom.

Daniel followed.

Not because he trusted her.

Because he needed to see.

Claire opened the closet and pulled down a small cardboard box from the top shelf.

It was covered in dust.

That bothered him.

Not because the box was old.

Because it meant she had put something away and decided never to touch it again.

She placed it on the bed.

“I didn’t want this part of her life.”

Daniel looked at her.

“She had another life before us.”

Claire’s expression tightened.

“No.”

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“She had another person before us.”

Daniel opened the box.

Inside were papers.

Folders.

A hospital bracelet.

Photographs.

And a small envelope with his name written on it.

His name.

Not Claire’s.

Not Lily’s.

His.

His fingers stopped.

“When did you get this?”

Claire sat down.

“The day we brought her home.”

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“You never gave it to me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

May you like

Claire looked away.

“Because I read it.”
