Chương 4

Do not go through the front.

Daniel looked around the empty parking lot.

A cold feeling moved through him, not because he believed the warning, but because he hated that part of him did.

He walked around the side of the building instead.

The narrow alley smelled like wet concrete and old leaves.

Three years ago, employees had used this path when they wanted to smoke away from the pressure of quarterly meetings.

Daniel had never joined them.

He had always told himself he was too busy.

Later, he realized he had simply not wanted anyone to see him without the confidence he wore like a uniform.

Near the back entrance, he found the door slightly open.

The first thought that came to him was that he should leave.

The second was that leaving was exactly what he had been doing for three years.

He pushed the door open.

The hallway smelled different.

Dust.

Old carpet.

A faint trace of the lemon cleaner the maintenance crew used every Friday.

The small details bothered him more than the accusations ever had.

The building had moved on.

The world had kept pieces of him in places where he no longer belonged.

He stepped inside.

The lights above him flickered once before turning on.

His footsteps sounded too loud.

He reached the third floor and found the old office entrance covered with a temporary plywood panel.

Someone had cut a small opening near the lock.

Daniel crouched beside it.

The person who left the photograph had not wanted him to find the door.

They had wanted him to find the idea that there was still something hidden behind it.

He slipped through the opening.

The office looked almost untouched.

Not preserved.

Abandoned.

A broken chair sat near the reception desk.

A stack of unopened mail rested beneath a layer of dust.

A calendar from three years ago still hung on the wall.

The last marked appointment was the day before everything collapsed.

Rachel Cole's name was written there.

Daniel walked closer.

He remembered that morning.

Rachel had stood outside his office holding a folder against her chest.

She had looked nervous.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Nervous.

At the time, he had assumed she was nervous because she knew she had been caught.

Now another possibility appeared.

Maybe she had been afraid of something else.

A sound came from the hallway.

Daniel turned quickly.

A man stood near the entrance.

Older.

Thinner than Daniel remembered.

But unmistakable.

"Tom," Daniel said.

Tom Alvarez looked away first.

That was the first thing Daniel noticed.

Not the surprise.

Not the fear.

The avoidance.

"You shouldn't be here," Tom said.

Daniel almost laughed.

"That is interesting coming from the guy who spent two years telling everyone I should be in prison."

Tom rubbed his hand across his face.

He looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Not innocent.

Just exhausted.

"I didn't say that."

"You signed the statement."

"I signed what they put in front of me."

Daniel took a step closer.

"That is a very convenient sentence."

Tom's eyes hardened.

"You think this is easy for me?"

"No."

Daniel looked around the abandoned office.

"I think you made it easy for yourself."

The words landed between them.

Tom looked at the floor.

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Outside, a truck passed on the street below.

The sound faded slowly.

"I found the photo," Daniel said.

Tom's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"You knew about it."

Tom did not answer.

Daniel felt something tighten in his chest.

"How long?"

"Long enough."

"That means nothing."

"It means I was hoping someone else would find it first."

"Why?"

Tom leaned against the wall.

"Because I was tired of being the person who knew something and did nothing."

Daniel stared at him.

The answer should have made him angry.

Instead, it made him uncomfortable.

Because he understood it.

He had spent years being angry at people for not defending him.

But he had also spent years avoiding the possibility that some people were not brave enough, not because they hated him, but because they were afraid.

"What do you know?" Daniel asked.

Tom looked toward the old conference room.

"Rachel didn't create those files."

Daniel felt his heartbeat change.

"What?"

"The missing accounts."

Tom swallowed.

"She found them."

"That is what she said."

"No."

Tom shook his head.

"That is what everyone repeated."

He walked into the conference room and pulled a chair away from the table.

Daniel followed.

Tom opened a drawer beneath an old cabinet.

Inside was a small cardboard box.

"You kept that here?"

"I didn't keep it."

Tom looked embarrassed.

"I hid it."

Daniel opened the box.

Inside were printed emails, handwritten notes, and copies of documents.

Nothing looked dramatic.

No secret recordings.

No perfect piece of evidence.

Just paper.

The kind of paper people ignored because it looked ordinary.

"Why didn't you give this to the investigators?" Daniel asked.

Tom gave a tired smile.

"Because I thought I was helping."

Daniel looked up.

"What does that mean?"

Tom sat down.

"The company was already collapsing."

"I know."

"No, you know the version everyone knows."

He tapped the papers.

"Investors were leaving.

Employees were scared.

People were losing their health insurance.

Some of them had mortgages because they trusted this company."

Daniel looked away.

He remembered those meetings.

The panic.

The questions.

The anger.

He remembered promising everyone he would fix it.

He remembered believing confidence was the same thing as control.

"Someone was moving money before the lawsuit," Tom said.

"Who?"

Tom looked at him.

"That is the part I never proved."

Daniel waited.

"Then why bring me here?"

"Because Rachel was trying to prove it."

The room felt smaller.

Daniel looked back at the calendar on the wall.

"She blamed me."

Tom nodded slowly.

"She did."

"Why?"

Tom hesitated.

"Because you were the only person who could survive the damage."

Daniel frowned.

May you like

"What does that mean?"

"It means if she accused the person actually responsible, she would have needed evidence."
