Chương 1

"""Vanessa Morgan’s palm struck Ava hard enough to turn her face toward the black iron railing, and for half a second the only thing Ava could hear was the thin metallic ringing inside her own skull.

“That baby was never supposed to inherit this house!”

The words arrived after the pain. Or maybe Ava’s mind simply needed longer to understand them.

She stood at the top of the white-marble staircase in her cream maternity dress and beige cardigan, one hand hanging uselessly at her side, the other moving automatically toward the round weight of her eight-month belly. Vanessa faced her in burgundy, breathing too quickly, dark hair shaking around her shoulders. Behind them, Eleanor Morgan made a sound that was neither a word nor quite a gasp.

Ava tasted blood where her teeth had caught the inside of her cheek.

She looked at Vanessa.

“You knew about the will?”

Something changed in Vanessa’s face.

The fury disappeared first.

Fear followed so quickly that Ava noticed it even through the shock.

Ava stepped backward.

Her bare heel found nothing.

She had enough time to tighten her fingers over her stomach and think, absurdly, that the marble had been polished that morning.

Then the staircase came up under her.

Her hip hit first. Her shoulder struck the edge of another step. She twisted instinctively, trying to keep her belly away from the stone, and the motion sent her sideways instead of straight down. Her cardigan caught under her elbow. The dark-blue phone in its pocket slipped free, bounced once, and skittered ahead of her.

Somewhere above, Eleanor screamed her name.

Ava stopped several steps below the landing with one leg folded beneath her and the side of her body pressed against cold marble.

For three or four seconds nobody moved.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Eleanor reached the first step and stopped as though the staircase itself had become dangerous.

“Vanessa,” she said. Her voice came out low and shaken. “What have you done?”

“She slipped.”

Vanessa’s hand dropped from her mouth. Her words came faster now.

“She stepped back. You saw her. She slipped.”

Eleanor looked at her daughter.

“I saw your hand.”

“Mom.”

“I saw your hand.”

Ava could hear them, but they seemed farther away than they should have been.

Pain traveled through her left side in slow waves. Her stomach felt impossibly tight.

She did not move at first.

Then her fingers shifted against the marble.

The phone had stopped two steps below her hand.

Vanessa was saying something about an ambulance, then saying they should wait, then insisting Ava had probably only bruised herself. Eleanor told her to be quiet. Vanessa told Eleanor not to make this worse. Their voices tangled together above her.

Ava opened her eyes only enough to see the edge of the phone.

She moved two fingers.

Stopped.

Breathed.

Moved them again.

“Don’t call anyone,” Vanessa said.

This time her voice carried clearly down the stairwell.

Ava’s fingertips touched the phone.

She did not lift her head.

The side emergency button was where it had always been.

She pressed it twice.

A soft vibration answered against the marble.

Ava waited until Vanessa started speaking again.

Then, with her mouth close to the stone, she whispered, “Come inside. Now.”

The double entrance doors opened hard enough to send one of the brass wall sconces trembling.

Vanessa spun around.

Nathan Cole crossed the foyer first, tall and broad-shouldered in a black suit over a black shirt. Two men dressed almost identically came through behind him. They had been waiting in the security vehicle beyond the front gates, close enough to respond to the emergency signal, far enough away that Vanessa apparently had never noticed them.

Nathan took in the staircase in one look.

Ava on the marble.

Eleanor halfway between her daughter and daughter-in-law.

Vanessa standing above them in black heels with one hand still clenched against her dress.

“Step away from Mrs. Morgan.”

Nathan did not raise his voice.

He did not need to.

Vanessa stared at him.

Then at the two men behind him.

Then down at Ava.

“Mrs. Morgan?”

The contempt she intended did not survive the last syllable.

Ava lifted her head.

It hurt more than she expected.

She looked straight at Vanessa.

“You really didn’t know whose house this was.”

Nathan was beside Ava before Vanessa could answer.

He crouched without touching her.

“Can you hear me?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t move.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

The answer came out weaker than Ava meant it to, but Nathan’s mouth tightened for a second in something that might have been relief.

One of the security men was already calling 911. The other remained near the foot of the stairs, watching Vanessa without crowding her.

Eleanor came down two more steps.

“Ava, sweetheart—”

“Stay there.”

Nathan’s tone remained controlled.

Eleanor froze.

He glanced toward her.

“I’m sorry. Just until paramedics get here. Nobody needs to move around her.”

Vanessa backed against the railing.

“This is insane.”

No one answered.

“She fell.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Tell them.”

“I am not doing this with you.”

“Doing what? Telling the truth?”

“You hit her.”

“I slapped her. She stepped backward.”

Ava saw Nathan’s eyes move toward Vanessa, then back to her.

He said nothing.

That silence frightened Vanessa more than an accusation might have.

She started down one step.

The security man at the bottom raised a hand.

“Please remain where you are, ma’am.”

“Oh, please.”

Vanessa gave a short laugh that sounded wrong in the enormous foyer.

“This is my mother’s house.”

Eleanor opened her eyes.

“No,” she said quietly.

Vanessa turned.

Eleanor gripped the railing. Her silver hair was still pinned perfectly in place, but the rest of her seemed suddenly older than sixty-six.

“No, Vanessa. It isn’t.”

The paramedics arrived seven minutes later.

To Ava, it felt like an hour and also like no time at all.

She remembered the sharp rip of Velcro from a blood-pressure cuff. A flashlight crossing her pupils. Somebody asking how many weeks pregnant she was and somebody else asking whether she had lost consciousness. Eleanor answering a question that had not been directed at her. Nathan telling her twice to let the paramedics work.
