Chương 11

Crystal shattered.

The ballroom exploded into motion. Family guards dragged their principals down. Moretti men fired toward the balcony. Vivian dropped beneath the railing. One accomplice fell; the other disappeared behind the curtain.

Clara threw herself over Emma.

Bullets struck marble. A chandelier swayed overhead, scattering broken prisms across the floor. Someone shouted that the west doors were opening. Another gun fired from the musicians’ alcove.

Alessandro reached Clara and pulled her behind a stone column.

“Stay down.”

“Vivian is up there.”

His eyes went to the balcony.

“She chose her position,” he said.

“Then choose yours.”

For one second anger flared between them.

Then he handed his pistol to Matteo and stripped off his suit jacket.

“What are you doing?” Matteo demanded.

“The dumbwaiter.”

Clara looked at Don Ricci. He had told him.

“You will not fit,” she said.

“I will.”

“You don’t know the latch.”

“Then you are coming as far as the pantry.”

“No,” Matteo said.

Alessandro looked at him.

The security chief pointed toward the families crouched behind overturned tables. “You leave this room and every man here assumes you are escaping. I go.”

“You are twice her width.”

“I can take the nursery passage.”

“They expect that,” Clara said.

Matteo wiped blood from his hands onto his trousers. “Then I’ll give them what they expect while he uses the shaft.”

It was the kind of decision that could be loyalty or guilt. There was no time to decide which.

Don Ricci crouched beside Emma. “The child stays with me.”

Emma clung to Clara’s skirt.

Clara knelt. “Sweetheart, I need you to stay with Mr. Ricci.”

“No.”

“You have to.”

“No.”

Her lower lip trembled. She was still barefoot, one curl stuck to her wet cheek, the blue rabbit crushed beneath her arm.

Clara wanted to stay. Every part of her wanted to curl around Emma until the world exhausted itself against her back.

Then she saw Daniel’s letter in her mind. Love and protection are not the same thing.

She took the brass key from the rabbit’s belly and placed it in Don Ricci’s palm.

“If I don’t come back, you take her to my sister Hannah.”

Ricci closed his fingers around the key. “You will come back.”

“You killed your brother. Don’t comfort me.”

His mouth tightened. “Hannah’s address?”

Clara whispered it.

Emma began to cry.

Clara kissed her forehead, then her cheeks, then the newly repaired eye of the rabbit because Emma held it between them.

“I love you,” she said.

“Don’t go.”

“I have to help.”

“Why?”

Because adults had built rooms where children were expected to survive their secrets. Because Daniel had tried to protect Clara by leaving her blind. Because Vivian had risked everyone for the illusion of belonging. Because Alessandro commanded fear but could not see all the corridors in his own house.

Clara gave the only answer Emma might understand.

“Because you stood up for me.”

She left before her courage could change shape.

The pantry smelled of coffee, citrus peel, and spilled wine. Gunfire sounded muted beyond the thick door. Clara pulled open the lower panel beside an unused warming cabinet. Dust coated the dumbwaiter platform.

“The ladder is behind it,” she told Alessandro.

He removed his watch and slipped it into his pocket. Without the suit jacket and polished stillness, he looked younger and more tired.

“You should return to Emma.”

“I know the latch.”

“Explain it.”

“It sticks.”

“Explain how to open it.”

“You lift, push left, then pull down.”

He put one foot on the metal rung. “Now return.”

Clara folded her arms. “You won’t know which door is the balcony closet.”

“How many?”

“Three.”

“Describe it.”

“The second smells like mice.”

He stared at her.

She stared back.

A burst of gunfire rattled the pantry glasses.

Alessandro climbed. Clara followed.

The shaft was narrower than she remembered. Metal rungs bit through the thin soles of her work shoes. Alessandro’s shoes scraped the brick ahead. Dust fell into her eyes. Somewhere above, a cable creaked.

“You do this often?” he whispered.

“Only on elegant evenings.”

He almost laughed, and the sound seemed impossible in the dark.

Halfway up, he stopped.

Clara’s head struck his shoe.

“What?”

“Someone is opening the upper door.”

Light appeared through a seam above them.

A shadow crossed it.

Alessandro pressed himself against the wall. Clara flattened beneath him, holding her breath.

The panel opened.

A man leaned into the shaft and pointed a pistol downward.

Alessandro caught his wrist with both hands and slammed it against the metal frame. The shot deafened Clara. Brick dust burst beside her face.

The gun fell.

Clara caught it against her chest before it dropped into the pantry.

Above, the man and Alessandro struggled in the narrow opening. There was no room for skill, only weight and leverage. The man struck Alessandro’s wounded arm. Alessandro grunted, lost one handhold, and slipped a rung.

Clara raised the fallen pistol.

She had never fired a gun.

She aimed at the upper opening and discovered Alessandro’s body blocked every clear shot.

The attacker drew a knife.

Clara grabbed Alessandro’s ankle. “Drop.”

He did.

His weight came down against her shoulder, nearly tearing her from the ladder. The knife slashed through empty air.

Clara fired.

The bullet struck the wooden frame beside the attacker’s face. He recoiled.

Alessandro surged upward and drove his shoulder into the panel. The man disappeared with a crash.

For several seconds neither of them moved.

Clara’s ears rang. Her hands shook so badly the pistol tapped against the ladder.

“You missed,” Alessandro said.

“I noticed.”

“You also saved me.”

“I was aiming for him.”

His breathing changed, almost a laugh. “Stay here.”

He climbed through the opening.

Clara followed before he could object.

The balcony storage closet contained broken music stands, folded chairs, and the attacker unconscious beneath a fallen shelf. Alessandro kicked away the knife and bound the man’s wrists with an electrical cable.

Voices came through the wall.

Vivian was pleading.
