Chương 7

"Don't press anything."

Daniel stared at the device.

"Why?"

"Because if someone wanted us to find this, they wanted us to hear it."

"Isn't that the point?"

Henry looked at the recorder.

"No."

His voice lowered.

"The point is deciding when."

Mara watched Daniel put it back.

That surprised her.

She had expected him to argue.

Instead, he listened.

Maybe because he was finally realizing Henry was not just hiding things.

Maybe because he was beginning to understand that fear and guilt sometimes looked identical from the outside.

Evelyn opened the notebook.

The first pages were filled with dates.

Names.

Numbers.

Her breathing changed.

"What is it?"

She did not answer.

Mara stepped closer.

"Rebecca?"

Rebecca looked over.

"What?"

"Can you check the window?"

Rebecca frowned.

"Why?"

"Because I want someone watching the room instead of the papers."

Rebecca hesitated.

Then she moved.

A small thing.

But it changed something.

They were no longer four strangers standing around a secret.

They were becoming a group.

A fragile one.

A suspicious one.

But a group.

Evelyn turned another page.

Then another.

Her face grew paler.

"What did you find?" Daniel asked.

She looked at Henry.

"Laura was tracking payments from the foundation."

Henry nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"You knew."

"I suspected."

"For twenty years?"

"I didn't have proof."

Evelyn looked angry again.

"That is not enough."

"No."

Henry accepted that.

"It isn't."

Mara noticed the difference.

He was not defending himself.

Not this time.

"I should have done more."

The admission seemed to surprise everyone.

Especially Henry.

As if he had not expected himself to say it aloud.

Then the recorder on the table clicked.

Nobody touched it.

The tiny red light turned on.

A voice filled the apartment.

A woman's voice.

Older than a memory.

But unmistakable.

"Henry, if you are hearing this, it means I was right to be afraid."

Henry stopped breathing.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel grabbed the edge of the table.

Laura's voice continued.

"And if Evelyn is with you, then I need you both to understand something."

A pause.

A breath.

Then the sentence that made Henry close his eyes.

"Thomas Vale is not the reason I disappeared."

The recording crackled.

And Laura whispered the name of the person she believed had helped him.

The name on the recording had barely left the speaker before Henry reached across the table and turned it off.

Nobody moved for a moment.

The apartment seemed to hold the sound of his hand hitting the recorder harder than necessary.

Evelyn stared at him.

"Why did you stop it?"

Henry looked at the device.

"Because I know what comes next."

"That is not an answer."

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"It is the reason I am afraid."

Mara watched him carefully.

The fear was different now.

Before, Henry had looked afraid of being exposed.

Now he looked afraid of something arriving.

"Who is Caleb?" Daniel asked.

Henry did not answer.

Mara felt the question land differently than the others.

She had spent years hearing that name from people who knew her family.

Caleb.

Her younger brother.

The person who could turn a quiet dinner into an argument before anyone finished passing the plates.

The person who left town three years ago after their mother died and only sent short messages when he needed something.

The person Mara still kept a spare key for even though she told herself she had stopped waiting for him.

She looked at Henry.

The old man was looking back at her.

Not with recognition.

With guilt.

That was worse.

"Why do you know my brother's name?" Mara asked.

The room changed.

Evelyn looked from Henry to Mara.

Daniel lowered the recorder.

Rebecca stopped pretending to watch the window.

Henry closed his eyes.

"I was hoping I was wrong."

"About what?"

He looked at her.

"About you."

Mara felt anger rise before confusion could take over.

"That is not an explanation."

"No."

Henry swallowed.

"It is the problem."

A knock sounded against the apartment door.

Everyone turned.

Thomas's voice came from the hallway.

"Henry."

The calmness in his voice made Mara's skin tighten.

Not because it was threatening.

Because it sounded familiar.

Like someone who had practiced being reasonable.

"Open the door," Thomas said.

Henry stepped away from the table.

"Nobody does anything."

Daniel frowned.

"You keep saying that like we are children."

Henry looked at him.

"I keep saying it because I spent twenty years learning what happens when people think they can force their way through something they don't understand."

Thomas knocked again.

"Henry, I know you are not alone."

Mara looked toward the small blinking device near the bookshelf.

The realization came slowly this time.

Not a sudden discovery.

A chain of details.

The way Thomas knew they were there.

The way he knew they found the apartment.

The way he spoke like he was standing in the room with them.

"How long has he been listening?" Mara asked.

Henry looked at the device.

"I don't know."

That answer surprised her.

For once, he sounded honest instead of guarded.

Mara stepped closer but stopped before touching it.

She remembered something Caleb had told her years ago.

Never touch something just because you are curious.

Curiosity makes people careless.

She hated that she still remembered his advice.

"Then we need to assume he can hear us," she said.

Daniel looked at her.

"How do you know what to do?"

Mara looked at the device.

"I don't."

She shook her head.

"I know enough to not make it easier for him."

That answer seemed to satisfy him more than pretending confidence would have.

Rebecca moved away from the window.

"I need to tell you something."

Nobody looked surprised.

That almost made her look more uncomfortable.

"Thomas contacted me before today."

Evelyn's face hardened.

"You said he called you this morning."

"He did."

"That is not what you just said."

Rebecca rubbed her hands together.

"I spoke to him last week."

Daniel stared at her.

May you like

"Why?"

"Because he knew I had been looking into Laura."
