Chương 8

Another pause.

The kind people make when they know the answer will hurt.

"Your husband."

I looked at Lily.

The tiny rise and fall of her breathing was the only thing keeping me grounded.

The man continued.

"I have been trying to find you for months."

"Why?"

His voice lowered.

"Because Adrian Hale was never trying to replace you."

The room became completely still.

"He was trying to make it look like you never existed."

I waited for Daniel to say more.

For a few seconds, nobody in the room moved.

Even Lily seemed to sense the silence and shifted slightly against my chest.

"Explain," Eleanor said.

Her voice was calm, but her eyes were fixed on the phone.

Daniel took a breath.

"I work in forensic document review."

My father stepped closer.

"What does that have to do with my daughter?"

Daniel paused.

"Three months ago, I was hired to review a collection of documents connected to a private family arrangement."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"What arrangement?"

"Surrogacy agreements."

The room became colder.

I looked at Adrian's empty chair near the door.

"He hired you?"

"No."

The answer came quickly.

"Someone connected to him did."

Eleanor exchanged a glance with my father.

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said, "A woman named Vanessa Reed."

My stomach dropped.

I closed my eyes briefly.

Of course.

Of course the story had more layers.

People did not create disasters this large with only one person involved.

"What did you find?" Eleanor asked.

Daniel's voice lowered.

"I found inconsistencies between the documents provided to me and the records they were supposed to represent."

"What kind of inconsistencies?"

"Dates."

"Signatures."

"Notary information."

"Medical authorization forms."

My breathing became shallow.

The same things.

The same details that had felt wrong when I first saw the folder.

"Why didn't you tell anyone before now?" my father asked.

"Because I was not sure who was involved."

A pause followed.

"I was not sure if Vanessa was part of the fraud or if she was another person being manipulated."

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the question everyone had been avoiding.

How many people had Adrian destroyed while trying to build his perfect life?

Daniel continued.

"Then I saw the hospital records request."

Eleanor looked up.

"How?"

"The request was attached to a legal filing."

My father's expression hardened.

"Who filed it?"

"Adrian Hale."

The answer landed heavily.

Daniel continued.

"That was when I realized the person I had been investigating was not just attempting to complete a private arrangement."

He stopped.

"What?"

"He was attempting to create a paper trail showing that Claire Whitmore voluntarily surrendered her parental rights."

My hand moved instinctively around Lily.

The words felt unreal.

Not because I doubted them.

Because hearing them confirmed the worst thing my mind had refused to accept.

Adrian had not made one cruel decision.

He had built a system.

"He wanted everyone to believe I agreed," I whispered.

Daniel did not answer immediately.

Then he said, "Yes."

My father turned away.

For a moment, I saw the anger on his face.

Not the loud kind.

The dangerous kind.

The kind that came from a person realizing someone had harmed his child while he was not there.

Eleanor noticed.

"Robert."

My father closed his eyes.

Only for a second.

Then he returned to himself.

"I am fine."

Nobody believed him.

Including him.

Daniel spoke again.

"There is something else you need to know."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"The original documents were not created recently."

Eleanor frowned.

"Meaning?"

"They were built from older information."

I looked confused.

"What older information?"

Daniel answered carefully.

"Information from your personal records."

The room went silent.

"What records?"

"Employment applications."

"Medical forms."

"Financial documents."

My face went numb.

I looked at my father.

Then at Eleanor.

"How would he have access to those?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already knew the most obvious possibility.

My husband.

The person who shared my home.

The person who knew where I kept important papers.

The person who had access to my computer.

The person who knew my passwords before I changed them.

I felt sick.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I remembered.

The small things.

The moments I had ignored.

Adrian sitting at my desk while I cooked dinner.

Adrian asking why I kept old documents.

Adrian saying he was organizing our finances.

Adrian telling me married people should not hide things from each other.

Trust had been the door.

I had handed him the key.

Eleanor turned to me.

"Claire, did Adrian ever ask for access to your personal accounts?"

I swallowed.

"Yes."

"When?"

"After we got married."

"Did you give it to him?"

"Some of it."

"What about your email?"

I looked down.

"I don't know."

That was the hardest answer.

Not no.

Not yes.

I did not know.

Because trust had made me stop paying attention.

My father sat beside me.

"Claire."

I looked at him.

"This is not your fault."

I almost argued.

The old version of me would have.

The woman who spent years defending Adrian would have immediately searched for her own mistakes.

Maybe I should have noticed.

Maybe I should have checked.

Maybe I should have asked more questions.

But Lily moved slightly.

Her tiny fingers opened and closed around mine.

And something inside me shifted.

A child did not need a mother who blamed herself for someone else's choices.

She needed a mother who protected her.

Daniel spoke again.

"There is one more thing."

I looked back at the phone.

"What?"

"I found a name connected to the original file."

Eleanor leaned forward.

"Whose name?"

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said it.

"Claire Whitmore."

I felt confused.

"What?"

"The file was not created to remove you completely."

My eyebrows pulled together.

"Then what was it created for?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"To replace your identity."

The room went completely still.

My father stood.

"Explain that sentence."

May you like

Daniel breathed out.

"Someone was preparing a legal record where another woman could appear as the biological and legal mother while Claire was recorded as a temporary carrier."
