Chương 4
Their mother shook her head.
"That's not true."
"It is."
Emily's voice trembled.
"I remember you standing outside the door."
Daniel froze.
"What door?"
Emily looked at the basement hallway behind them.
"The door where they kept me."
The color disappeared from his mother's face.
Daniel felt his heart sink.
"You knew?"
His mother did not answer.
That silence was enough.
Daniel stepped back.
"You knew."
His mother's breathing became uneven.
"I knew where you were."
The admission felt like the entire mansion collapsing.
Emily closed her eyes.
For ten years, she had carried the memory alone.
Now the person who could have saved her was standing only a few feet away.
"Why?" Emily whispered.
Her mother looked at her.
"I was afraid."
Emily shook her head slowly.
"You were my mother."
"I know."
"No."
Emily's voice broke.
"You don't know."
She wiped away a tear.
"You had a choice."
Daniel watched his sister's pain.
It was different from anger.
It was the pain of someone who had waited years for an explanation and received only regret.
His mother walked closer.
"I wanted to take you away."
Emily looked at her.
"Then why didn't you?"
The answer came slowly.
"Because your father threatened Daniel."
Daniel froze.
His mother looked at him with guilt.
"He told me if I went against him, he would destroy everything."
Emily stared at her.
"He used him."
Her mother nodded.
"He knew I loved you both."
Daniel felt sick.
His entire childhood suddenly looked like a carefully planned illusion.
His father had not only hidden Emily.
He had controlled everyone around him.
"Where is he now?" Daniel asked.
Nobody answered.
That silence told him everything.
"He is alive."
His mother looked away.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Where?"
Before she could respond, the lights flickered.
The mansion became dark for a moment.
A second later, emergency lights turned on.
The sound of the storm returned.
Emily grabbed Daniel's arm.
"He's here."
Daniel looked at her.
"How do you know?"
"Because this is what he always did."
Her voice became smaller.
"When he knew someone was close to the truth, he appeared."
A slow sound echoed through the hallway.
Footsteps.
Calm.
Controlled.
Familiar.
Daniel turned toward the entrance.
A man stood there beneath the shadows.
Older than the portraits on the walls.
But still carrying the same powerful presence.
His father.
Richard Whitmore.
Daniel had not seen him in almost a year.
Richard had supposedly been traveling for business.
Recovering from health problems.
Maintaining the family empire from a distance.
But now he stood in the mansion like he had never left.
His eyes moved from Daniel to Emily.
Then to the broken silver necklace in her hand.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Richard sighed.
"I was hoping I had more time."
Daniel felt something inside him break.
Not because he was surprised.
Because some part of him had always known.
"Did you keep her here?"
Richard looked at Emily.
"Daniel."
His voice was calm.
Almost disappointed.
"You don't understand what you are seeing."
Daniel stepped forward.
"I understand enough."
Richard looked around the mansion.
"The world is not as simple as you think."
Emily laughed softly.
"That's what you always said."
Richard's expression changed slightly.
"You should not have come back."
Daniel moved between them.
"You don't get to decide that anymore."
His father looked at him.
For the first time, Daniel saw something unfamiliar in his eyes.
Fear.
"You would destroy this family over her?"
Daniel looked at Emily.
Then back at his father.
"No."
He paused.
"I would destroy the lies that were pretending to be this family."
Richard's face hardened.
"You have no idea what you are risking."
Daniel stepped closer.
"I spent my whole life protecting a name."
His voice became colder.
"Now I'm protecting a person."
Emily looked at him.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Richard shook his head.
"You sound exactly like your mother."
Daniel answered quietly.
"Maybe that's the first compliment you've ever given me."
The silence was broken by a sudden sound from outside.
Police sirens.
Richard's expression changed.
Daniel noticed immediately.
"You called them?"
Richard looked toward the windows.
"No."
Daniel looked at Emily.
She shook her head.
Then everyone turned toward Daniel's mother.
She stood near the staircase holding an old phone in her hand.
"I did."
Richard stared at her.
"You betrayed me."
His wife looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"No."
She shook her head.
"I finally stopped protecting you."
For the first time, Richard Whitmore looked powerless.
The mansion that had hidden secrets for decades was surrounded.
The truth was no longer trapped underground.
Daniel looked at Emily.
She was still holding the broken necklace.
The same object that had carried her pain for years.
He gently placed his hand over hers.
"This ends tonight."
Emily looked toward her father.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"It begins tonight."
Because everyone in the mansion knew the basement was only the beginning.
There were still missing documents.
There were still unanswered questions.
And there were still people outside the Whitmore family who had helped keep the secret alive.
As the police entered the mansion, Daniel realized one final truth.
Finding Emily had not uncovered the past.
It had opened the door to something much bigger.
What should the next segment focus on: Richard’s confession or the hidden evidence inside the mansion?
Because everyone in the mansion knew the basement was only the beginning, the arrival of the police did not bring peace.
It only revealed how deep the Whitmore family's secrets truly went.
Richard Whitmore stood in the center of the grand entrance hall, surrounded by officers who no longer saw him as a respected businessman.
They saw him as a man connected to a decade-old disappearance.
Daniel watched his father carefully.
