Chương 7

Then pride covered it.

“You’ll regret humiliating this family.”

Clara looked at her.

“No.”

She adjusted the strap of her purse.

“I regret staying quiet.”

That was the last thing she said to Eleanor.

The doors remained open.

The two bodyguards waited without expression.

The hallway beyond the dining room looked strangely ordinary.

That almost made everything feel more real.

There was no dramatic change in the world outside.

No sign that something enormous had happened.

People were still walking through the house.

Lights were still on.

Cars still passed outside.

Somewhere nearby, someone was probably laughing at a completely unrelated conversation.

The world did not stop because one person finally stopped accepting pain.

Clara stepped toward the doorway.

Then she heard David behind her.

“Clara.”

She stopped.

Not because she wanted to.

Because hearing her name in his voice still reached a part of her that remembered another version of him.

The husband who used to bring her coffee.

The man who once kissed her forehead before leaving for work.

The person she had believed she knew.

She turned halfway.

David stood near the table.

Without the confidence.

Without the performance.

Just a man facing the consequences of choices he had spent years avoiding.

“I did love you.”

The words were barely above a whisper.

Clara looked at him.

That was the hardest part.

Because she believed him.

Maybe not completely.

Maybe not the way she once had.

But she believed there had been something real somewhere beneath everything that happened.

Love did not disappear just because someone damaged it.

Sometimes that was what made leaving so painful.

“I know,” she said.

David looked surprised.

She continued.

“That’s why this hurt.”

His face changed.

For a moment, he looked like he might finally understand.

But Clara did not wait to see if he did.

Understanding from someone else could not be the reason she saved herself.

She walked out.

The doors closed behind her.

Inside the dining room, nobody spoke.

David remained standing beside the overturned chair he had nearly knocked into during his anger.

The same chair where he had spent years sitting comfortably while someone else carried the weight of the family.

Eleanor slowly lowered herself into her seat.

The confidence that had filled her earlier was gone.

The father-in-law stared at the papers.

Not at Clara.

Not at David.

At the evidence.

Because now he had to face a question he had avoided.

Not whether his son had made mistakes.

Whether he had helped create the person who made them.

Outside, Clara entered the waiting car.

She sat down carefully.

Only after the door closed did she allow herself to lean back.

Her breathing became uneven.

The strength she had shown inside the house finally loosened.

A tear moved down her face.

Just one.

She wiped it away quickly.

Not because she was ashamed.

Because she was tired.

Sylvester sat across from her.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

The quiet was different from the silence inside the dining room.

This silence did not demand anything from her.

“You handled yourself well,” he said.

Clara looked out the window.

“I almost didn’t.”

“That doesn’t matter.”

She looked back at him.

“It does.”

He waited.

“I was scared.”

The honesty surprised even her.

“I kept thinking I would walk in there and suddenly become this person who knew exactly what to say.”

She looked down at her hands.

“But I was scared the whole time.”

Sylvester nodded.

“That’s usually how it works.”

Clara gave a small, tired laugh.

“That’s not very inspirational.”

“It’s true.”

The answer made her smile slightly.

A real smile.

Small.

But real.

The car began moving.

Behind them, the house became smaller through the window.

Not erased.

Not forgotten.

Just farther away.

Clara placed one hand over her stomach.

The baby moved again.

This time, the feeling did not remind her of everything she had lost.

It reminded her of what she still had.

A future that was no longer controlled by someone else.

A future she would have to build carefully.

A future that would not be perfect.

But it would be hers.

The future she would have to build carefully was waiting for her outside the house, but the first thing Clara needed was sleep.

She had forgotten what it felt like to be tired without fear attached to it.

For months, exhaustion had followed her everywhere.

It sat beside her during breakfast.

It waited with her in doctor’s offices.

It followed her through grocery stores while she tried to remember whether she had already bought something she needed.

She had blamed the pregnancy at first.

Then she blamed herself.

Then she finally understood that carrying a child had not been the only weight pressing against her.

The car moved through quiet streets while the city continued without noticing that her entire life had changed.

People walked dogs.

A couple argued softly outside a coffee shop.

A delivery driver carried boxes into an apartment building.

Normal life continued around her.

That was strangely comforting.

Clara rested her head against the window.

“I thought leaving would feel different.”

Sylvester looked at her.

“How?”

She considered the question.

“I don’t know.”

She watched the lights passing across the glass.

“Like I would suddenly feel free.”

He nodded slightly.

“Sometimes freedom feels like being exhausted in a safer place.”

The sentence stayed with her.

Because that was exactly what it felt like.

Safe.

Not happy yet.

Not healed.

Just safe.

The car stopped in front of a quiet building where Clara had arranged to stay temporarily.

She had found the place two weeks earlier.

A small apartment.

Nothing luxurious.

Nothing that matched the lifestyle David and his family cared about.

But it had a clean kitchen.

A bedroom with enough space for a crib.

A window that let in morning sunlight.

She liked that the apartment did not try to impress anyone.

It simply existed.

May you like

Before she opened the door, Sylvester spoke.

“You don’t have to prove anything tomorrow.”
