Chương 9

Emily whispered, “Dad was camouflage.”

Laura’s eyes filled.

“At first.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“And after?”

Laura looked at him.

“After, you became Daniel.”

The simplicity of it stopped him.

She swallowed.

“You complained when I bought the wrong coffee. You left socks beside the hamper instead of inside it. You called your mother every Sunday even when you were mad at her. You cried the first time Emily laughed and then denied it.”

Daniel looked away.

“I did not cry.”

“You absolutely did.”

Emily pulled the blanket tighter.

“He cries at dog movies.”

“One dog movie.”

“Four.”

“Those movies are manipulative.”

Laura’s mouth trembled.

For several seconds they were almost themselves.

Then Daniel looked at the evidence envelope.

Reality returned.

He said, “You should have trusted me with the truth.”

“Yes.”

“You can’t turn eighteen years into an emergency decision.”

“No.”

“Then don’t try.”

“I’m not.”

This time when she said it, he believed her.

That did not make forgiveness appear.

At three ten, Bell confirmed there was no active warrant associated with Rebecca Hale in the databases available to her.

“That doesn’t settle every legal question,” she told them. “But nobody here is putting you in handcuffs tonight based solely on the identity issue.”

Laura’s shoulders dropped.

Emily noticed.

“So we can leave?”

“The road’s physically closed.”

Emily sighed.

“Right.”

Bell continued.

“And I’d strongly prefer you remain available while we sort out the old missing-child report.”

Daniel said, “Prefer?”

Bell looked at him.

“You are all witnesses to different parts of this. Emily is an adult. I am not treating her as recovered property.”

Emily nodded gratefully.

Laura whispered, “Thank you.”

Bell turned to her.

“You may have committed offenses connected with the identity you used. I’m not telling you otherwise. You should speak to an attorney before a formal interview.”

Daniel stared.

“Now we need lawyers.”

Laura said, “I always knew this might happen.”

He looked at her.

That sentence hurt in a new way.

“You knew this might happen.”

“Yes.”

“And you had no plan?”

Laura gave him a tired, almost embarrassed look.

“I had several.”

“Of course you did.”

“Most of them were stupid.”

That surprised him.

“You admit that?”

“I’m having a difficult night.”

Daniel looked away to hide the beginning of a smile.

It disappeared quickly.

Bell said, “There’s another issue.”

Nobody wanted another issue.

She placed one scanned page on the table.

“I’m not showing you the full file yet because it contains personal information about other people. But this page matters.”

It was a newspaper clipping copied into the case record.

The photograph showed Rebecca Hale.

Laura.

Young. Frightened. Holding a baby whose face had been blurred in the archived copy.

The headline read:

MOTHER AND INFANT STILL MISSING AFTER FAMILY DISPUTE

Emily stepped closer.

“That’s me.”

Laura’s eyes remained on the photograph.

“Yes.”

Emily touched the edge of the paper.

“So there’s proof.”

“Proof of what?” Daniel asked.

“That I existed before you.”

His face tightened.

She looked at him.

“I didn’t mean—”

“I know.”

He put a hand on her shoulder.

This time she let him.

Bell pointed to a paragraph.

“The husband offered a reward for information leading to Rebecca’s return.”

Laura gave a small bitter laugh.

Bell looked at her.

“Why is that funny?”

“It isn’t.”

“Then what was that?”

Laura wrapped the blanket tighter.

“You’re reading an advertisement and calling it evidence of concern.”

Bell held her gaze.

“That’s a fair distinction.”

Daniel asked, “Did he ever find them?”

Bell looked at Laura.

“Apparently not.”

Emily said, “Then how did she get away?”

Laura’s eyes moved to her daughter.

The question settled between them.

It was the story all of them wanted.

It was also the story Laura still refused to tell.

Near dawn, the storm weakened.

The checkpoint lights no longer vanished behind sheets of snow. Plows began clearing the access road.

Luis returned with coffee.

He handed Daniel one.

Daniel took a sip and winced.

“This is terrible.”

Luis looked offended.

“It’s free.”

Daniel took another sip.

“Then it’s excellent.”

Luis smiled and left.

Emily slept for twenty minutes with her head on Daniel’s shoulder.

Laura watched.

Daniel caught her watching.

For a long time neither spoke.

Then he said, “Did you ever think about telling me?”

“Every year.”

“When?”

“Usually around her birthday.”

Daniel looked down at Emily.

“Why then?”

Laura’s eyes went to the sleeping girl.

“Because I would look at her and think I had stolen something from both of you.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You did.”

“Yes.”

He appreciated that she did not defend herself.

It made him angrier in a different way.

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because every year there was more to lose.”

“That’s cowardly.”

“Yes.”

“You’re agreeing with me a lot.”

“I don’t have much left to protect.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes, you do.”

Her eyes lifted.

“Her.”

He glanced at Emily.

“And maybe that’s the problem.”

Laura frowned.

“You keep protecting her by deciding for everyone.”

Laura looked down.

He continued.

“You decided I could be her father without knowing. You decided she shouldn’t know where she came from. You decided the danger outweighed the truth. Maybe you were right once. Maybe you saved her life. I don’t know.”

Laura’s eyes filled.

“But you don’t get to keep making that decision now.”

She nodded slowly.

“No.”

Daniel watched her.

“Say it like you mean it.”

“I don’t get to decide for her anymore.”

Emily spoke without opening her eyes.

“Good.”

Both parents looked down.

She sat up.

“How long were you awake?”

“Long enough.”

Daniel sighed.

“Children are spies.”

“I’m eighteen.”

“Adult spies.”

Emily rubbed her face.

She looked at Laura.

“If the road opens, I’m not leaving until you tell me something real.”

Laura glanced toward Bell.

Bell was speaking quietly with O’Connell across the room.

Emily continued.

“Not everything. I understand the safety thing.”

Laura waited.

“But one thing.”

“What?”

“My name.”

Laura went still.

“My first name.”

May you like

Daniel looked at her.

Laura’s lips parted.
