Chương 3

He was a tall man with silver hair and the careful expression of someone who had spent decades solving problems before guests noticed them.

“Ms. Carter?”

Naomi looked at him.

“Yes.”

The manager glanced at Marcus, then Evelyn, then back to Naomi.

“Is everything all right?”

The question was professional.

But Marcus noticed something.

The manager was not asking because he was concerned about the guests.

He was asking because he was concerned about Naomi.

That small detail unsettled him.

“She’s fine,” Marcus said.

Naomi looked at him immediately.

Not angry.

Just surprised.

As if she had forgotten he still knew how to speak for her.

“I can answer for myself,” she said.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.”

The manager waited.

Naomi looked toward the elevators.

“I need a minute.”

The manager nodded.

Then he walked away.

Marcus followed Naomi’s eyes and saw the security desk near the entrance.

Two guards stood there.

Watching.

Not aggressively.

But watching.

“Why are they looking at you?” he asked.

Naomi did not answer.

The silence was an answer of its own.

Marcus felt a familiar feeling return.

The same feeling he had during the months after she disappeared.

The feeling that everyone knew something he did not.

“You were alive,” he said quietly.

Naomi looked at him.

“Yes.”

The simplicity of it hurt.

“You were alive all this time.”

“Yes.”

“And you never called me.”

Her face tightened.

For the first time, he saw pain break through the exhaustion.

“You think I didn’t try?”

Marcus stopped.

The lobby seemed colder.

“What does that mean?”

Naomi looked around.

People were still watching.

Not enough to create a scene.

Enough to make privacy impossible.

“Not here.”

“Then where?”

She almost answered.

He saw it.

The hesitation.

The part of her that wanted to tell him.

Then her phone vibrated again.

She closed her eyes for a second.

A small reaction.

But Marcus saw it.

The same fear.

The same warning.

“Who keeps calling you?”

Naomi shook her head.

“You’re still doing it.”

“Doing what?”

“Looking for the answer that makes you feel better.”

Marcus felt his jaw tighten.

“That’s not fair.”

“No?”

“No.”

Naomi studied him.

Then she looked at Evelyn.

Something changed in her expression.

Not anger.

Something closer to understanding.

“You moved on.”

Evelyn looked uncomfortable.

Marcus immediately said, “It’s not like that.”

Naomi looked back at him.

“What is it like?”

He had no answer.

Because every possible answer sounded cruel.

He had loved Naomi.

He had lost Naomi.

He had rebuilt a life.

All of those things were true.

And somehow they all felt wrong standing in the same room.

Evelyn took a slow breath.

“I think I should leave.”

Marcus turned toward her.

“Evelyn.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice remained controlled, but her fingers were pressed tightly against the side of her dress.

“I’m not leaving because I’m angry.”

She paused.

“I’m leaving because I don’t know who I’m standing next to right now.”

Marcus felt the words hit harder than Naomi’s accusation.

Evelyn looked at Naomi.

“I’m sorry.”

Naomi seemed surprised by the apology.

“For what?”

“For being part of a life you never got to explain.”

Naomi looked away.

“That’s not your fault.”

It was the first kind thing she had said.

And somehow that made everything worse.

Evelyn walked toward the entrance.

Marcus almost followed her.

Almost.

Then Naomi said his name.

Not loudly.

Not as a demand.

Just enough to stop him.

He turned back.

She reached into the pocket of her blouse and pulled out an old photograph.

Marcus recognized it before he saw the front.

His breathing changed.

It was the picture from their wedding day.

Not the framed one they kept in their apartment.

A smaller copy.

The one Naomi carried in her wallet because she always said the bigger one made them look like strangers trying to pose as happy people.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Where did you get that?”

Naomi looked at the photograph.

“I never lost everything.”

The sentence confused him.

Then she flipped it over.

There was writing on the back.

Marcus read the words.

His face changed.

Because the handwriting was his.

A sentence he had written years ago.

A sentence he had forgotten.

But Naomi had not.

“You remember this?” she asked.

Marcus swallowed.

“I wrote that the night we found out you were pregnant.”

The words came out before he could stop them.

Naomi’s eyes moved to his face.

For one second, the anger disappeared.

Only one second.

Then it returned.

“We were supposed to leave together,” she said.

Marcus felt the room tilt.

“What?”

“You don’t remember?”

“No.”

Her fingers closed around the photograph.

“That’s the problem.”

Marcus shook his head slowly.

“Naomi, I don’t know what you think happened.”

“I know exactly what happened.”

“No, you don’t.”

The moment he said it, he regretted it.

Naomi went still.

The old version of her would have argued.

This version simply looked tired.

“Five years ago,” she said, “someone made sure I disappeared.”

Marcus felt the words settle.

Not like a revelation.

Like a threat.

“Who?”

Naomi looked toward the hotel entrance.

Evelyn had not left yet.

She stood near the doors, watching them.

The photograph trembled slightly in Naomi’s hand.

“I can’t tell you everything here.”

“Why?”

“Because if the person who did this knows I found you…”

She stopped.

Marcus waited.

But she did not finish.

The unfinished sentence frightened him more than the answer.

“Then what?” he asked.

Naomi looked at him.

“Then they’ll know I’m not alone anymore.”

Marcus felt something he had not allowed himself to feel in years.

Not grief.

Not anger.

Fear.

Because for the first time since Naomi vanished, he understood the possibility that her disappearance had never been an ending.

It had been an arrangement.

A carefully built lie that everyone around him had accepted because it was easier than admitting something impossible had happened.

The hotel doors opened behind him.

A man in a dark coat entered the lobby.
