Chương 4

Rachel approached him slowly.

"You should go after her."

Daniel looked at her.

His expression was filled with anger, regret, and confusion.

"Are you satisfied?"

Rachel's face remained calm.

"No."

The answer surprised him.

"I never wanted her to suffer."

Daniel looked away.

"Then why destroy everything tonight?"

Rachel looked around the ballroom.

"Because everything was already broken."

Those words stayed with him.

Rachel continued.

"You were not choosing between telling the truth and keeping a secret."

"You were choosing how long Emily would live inside a lie."

Daniel said nothing.

Rachel had once known a different version of him.

Or at least she thought she did.

Two years earlier, Daniel had entered her life as someone who seemed completely different.

He had been kind.

Patient.

Supportive.

He had listened to her ideas when others ignored her.

He had made her believe she was important.

But slowly, she discovered that Daniel had a habit.

He gave people exactly what they needed to hear.

He made promises easily.

And when those promises became inconvenient, he searched for ways to avoid responsibility.

Rachel had learned that lesson painfully.

Emily had learned it publicly.

Daniel finally spoke.

"I never wanted things to happen this way."

Rachel looked at him.

"Nobody does."

She walked away before he could respond.

Daniel remained alone in the ballroom.

The staff had started removing empty glasses from the tables.

The musicians quietly packed their instruments.

The wedding cake remained untouched.

A beautiful creation that represented a celebration that never truly happened.

Daniel looked at it for a long moment.

Earlier that night, he had imagined cutting that cake with Emily.

He had imagined their first dance.

He had imagined everyone leaving with memories of a perfect wedding.

Now the only memory anyone would carry was the moment his secret was revealed.

Outside the ballroom, Emily sat inside the back seat of the car waiting for her.

She had not called anyone.

She had not told her family.

She had not decided where she would go.

She simply sat there, holding the wedding ring in her hand.

The driver glanced at her through the mirror.

He had worked many weddings.

He had seen nervous brides.

Excited brides.

Emotional brides.

But he had never seen someone leave their own wedding looking completely lost.

"Are you okay, ma'am?"

Emily looked out the window.

The city lights blurred through her eyes.

"No."

The honesty of the answer surprised even her.

The driver nodded quietly.

He did not ask more.

Sometimes people did not need questions.

They needed space.

Back inside the hotel, Daniel finally left the ballroom.

He found Emily's parents standing near the entrance.

Her father, Michael, looked at him with disappointment.

Not anger.

That was worse.

Anger would have been easier.

"I trusted you."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

Michael stepped closer.

"You knew how much she loved you."

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes."

"You knew she gave you everything."

"Yes."

"Then why did you do this?"

Daniel searched for an answer.

But every answer sounded like an excuse.

"I made selfish choices."

Michael nodded slowly.

"At least you understand that."

Daniel looked toward the exit.

"I need to talk to her."

Michael moved slightly aside.

"That is between you and Emily now."

Daniel walked outside.

The night air felt colder than before.

He found Emily's car still waiting.

For a moment, he stood there.

The confident businessman who had entered the ballroom hours earlier was gone.

In his place was a man who finally understood that losing control of a situation was different from losing someone.

He approached the window.

Emily saw him.

She almost looked away.

But something stopped her.

Maybe because despite everything, she still wanted answers.

Daniel opened the door carefully.

"Can I talk to you?"

Emily looked at him.

"About what?"

The question was simple.

But he felt the weight behind it.

"About everything."

She gave a small, painful smile.

"That's the problem, Daniel."

"What?"

"You keep saying everything."

She looked down at the ring.

"But I don't even know where everything begins anymore."

Daniel sat quietly.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The silence between them was different from the silence in the ballroom.

This silence was personal.

It belonged only to them.

"I loved you," Daniel finally said.

Emily closed her eyes.

The words hurt.

Because she believed them.

And that made everything worse.

"I know you did."

Daniel looked surprised.

"You do?"

Emily nodded.

"That is why this hurts."

She turned toward him.

"If you never cared about me, maybe I could understand."

Her voice became softer.

"But you cared about me and still chose to hurt me."

Daniel looked down.

"I thought I could fix my past."

Emily stared at him.

"No."

She shook her head.

"You thought you could hide your past."

Daniel had no response.

Because once again, she was right.

Emily opened the door.

"I need time."

Daniel immediately looked up.

"Does that mean there is still a chance?"

Emily paused.

The question was difficult.

Not because she knew the answer.

Because she did not.

A part of her still remembered the man she loved.

Another part of her could not forget the man standing in front of her.

"I don't know."

Those three words were more painful than a final goodbye.

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I understand."

Emily looked at him one last time.

"Do you?"

He wanted to say yes.

But he stopped himself.

Because for the first time, he realized understanding was not something he could claim.

It was something he had to prove.

Emily closed the door.

The car slowly pulled away from the hotel.

Daniel watched until the lights disappeared into the distance.

Behind him, the ballroom doors remained open.

The place where he had promised forever.

The place where that promise broke.

He stood there alone beneath the hotel lights.

And for the first time in his life, Daniel Carter faced a consequence he could not negotiate.

He had spent years building a perfect image.
