Chương 5

And an envelope.

Daniel had seen the envelope before.

Not because he had opened it.

Because it was the same type of envelope Evelyn used for important documents.

His heart moved before his mind caught up.

“Where did you get that?”

Maya looked at him.

“My mom gave it to me.”

“When?”

“The day she left.”

“Why did you bring it here?”

Maya looked confused.

“Because she said this was the only place where it would make sense.”

Daniel reached toward it.

Then stopped.

“Did you open it?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“My mom said if I opened it, I might believe the wrong person.”

Ortiz looked at the envelope.

“Who was it addressed to?”

Maya turned it over.

There was no name.

Only a single word.

Home.

Daniel felt something close to anger.

Not because of the envelope.

Because Evelyn had spent her final days preparing for a future where she was not there to explain anything.

She had built instructions.

She had hidden warnings.

She had trusted a child to carry pieces of a puzzle no adult around her had been willing to face.

He picked up the envelope.

It was heavier than paper should have been.

Not because of what was inside.

Because of what it represented.

A choice.

A risk.

A woman who knew the truth might hurt him and decided the hurt was still better than ignorance.

Michael stepped forward.

“Daniel.”

He looked up.

“Don’t.”

“Whatever is in there, you need to think carefully.”

Daniel stared at him.

“For once, I’m going to do the opposite.”

Michael frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I’m going to stop waiting for everyone else to decide when I’m ready.”

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Not a document.

Not a confession.

Just a photograph.

Daniel looked at it.

Then his breath stopped.

It showed Evelyn standing beside Rachel Carter.

But that was not what made his hands shake.

Between them stood a third person.

A man Daniel had known for nearly thirty years.

A man he had trusted enough to call family.

Thomas Vale.

And on the back of the photograph, written in Evelyn’s handwriting, were six words.

He knows why I disappeared.

Daniel stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

The room around him seemed to move farther away, as if everyone else had stepped backward and left him alone with a version of the past he had never been allowed to see.

Thomas Vale had spent thirty years standing beside him at board meetings, family dinners, hospital rooms, and funerals.

He had been the person Daniel called when decisions became too heavy.

He had been the person Evelyn complained about when she thought Daniel was being impossible.

He had been the person Daniel trusted to tell him the things nobody else wanted to say.

And now he was standing beside Evelyn in a photograph that should not exist.

“Where was this taken?” Ortiz asked.

Her voice was careful.

Not because she was afraid of the answer.

Because she already knew Daniel was close to breaking something.

Daniel turned the photograph over again.

The back had nothing except Evelyn’s handwriting.

He knows why I disappeared.

“No date,” Maya whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

The girl was watching him instead of the photograph.

She was trying to understand why a picture could change the shape of a room.

“Did your mother ever talk about him?” Daniel asked.

Maya shook her head.

“Not by name.”

“What did she say?”

The girl hesitated.

“She said there was a person who helped everyone believe the wrong story.”

Michael closed his eyes for a moment.

Daniel noticed.

It was a small reaction.

The kind people made when they heard something they wished they had not.

“You knew,” Daniel said.

Michael looked up.

“I knew Thomas was involved.”

“Involved in what?”

“I don’t know.”

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel laughed quietly.

“You don’t know, but you knew.”

Michael rubbed his jaw.

“There’s a difference.”

“Explain it.”

The attorney looked toward Ortiz.

Then toward Maya.

He seemed uncomfortable saying anything in front of a child.

Daniel almost respected that.

Almost.

“Five years ago, Evelyn came to my office.”

Daniel did not move.

“When?”

“Three weeks before she disappeared.”

The number hit harder than expected.

Three weeks.

Twenty-one days.

A lifetime of opportunities that nobody had given him.

“What happened?”

Michael walked to the table and sat down.

For the first time since entering the room, he looked tired.

“She brought documents.”

“What documents?”

“I never saw all of them.”

“Why?”

“Because she did not trust me enough to show me everything.”

Daniel looked away.

That hurt in a strange way.

Not because Evelyn distrusted Michael.

Because he understood why.

“What did she want?”

Michael looked at the floor.

“She wanted to know if someone could legally remove Thomas from the company.”

Daniel felt a cold pressure in his chest.

“Why?”

“She believed he had been hiding financial information.”

“About the company?”

Michael nodded.

“She thought money was being moved.”

Ortiz stepped closer.

“Was it?”

Michael looked at her.

“I found irregularities.”

Daniel turned.

“What kind of irregularities?”

“Transfers between accounts.”

“How much?”

Michael paused.

“That’s not the important part.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“It is when you’re talking about my wife disappearing.”

Michael accepted the anger without fighting it.

“Several hundred thousand dollars over multiple years.”

The room went quiet.

Maya looked confused.

She probably understood the seriousness without understanding the details.

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

Thomas standing beside Evelyn.

Not arguing.

Not threatening.

Smiling.

That bothered him more than anger would have.

“What did you do?” Ortiz asked.

Michael answered slowly.

“I investigated.”

“And?”

“I found enough to believe Evelyn was right to be concerned.”

Daniel waited.

“And then?”

Michael looked at him.

“I confronted Thomas.”

The answer created a new silence.

“What happened?”

“He denied everything.”

“Of course he did.”

“He showed me records.”

May you like

“What records?”

“Documents that made it look like Evelyn misunderstood what she was seeing.”
