Chương 9

“You never told me.”

“I know.”

She laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“You really like those words.”

Daniel looked away.

“I thought I had time.”

Emily crossed her arms.

“Everyone thinks they have time.”

The sentence hit him.

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Then what happened?”

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“When I got sick, I panicked.”

“You left.”

“Yes.”

“You could have called.”

“Yes.”

“You could have asked for help.”

“Yes.”

Every answer made the room heavier.

Emily looked at him.

“Why didn’t you?”

Daniel was quiet for a long time.

Then he said something she did not expect.

“Because I was ashamed.”

She said nothing.

“I was supposed to be Noah’s father.”

His voice cracked slightly.

“I was supposed to protect you both.”

Emily looked away.

“You weren’t supposed to be perfect.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

She looked back.

“You disappeared because you couldn’t handle not being perfect.”

Daniel did not argue.

That was the first thing he had done right in a long time.

“I thought if I stayed, you would spend all your energy trying to save me too.”

Emily stared.

“And you decided for me.”

“Yes.”

The word hurt because it sounded familiar.

Ray.

Daniel.

Different people.

Same mistake.

Everyone thought they were protecting her by keeping her outside the truth.

She sat down.

Not because she forgave him.

Because standing felt impossible.

“Why contact Ray?”

Daniel looked surprised.

“You know about that?”

“He told me.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I asked him to help.”

“Help with what?”

“The policy.”

Emily frowned.

“What?”

Daniel reached for a folder on the table.

He placed it in front of her.

Inside were documents.

Insurance papers.

Medical records.

Letters.

Emily looked through them.

Then she stopped.

A signature.

A date.

A denial letter.

“What is this?”

Daniel sat across from her.

“The insurance company refused the claim.”

“Why?”

“They said I missed a payment before my diagnosis.”

Emily looked confused.

“You missed a payment?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked embarrassed.

“Because I was already behind.”

Emily closed her eyes.

The anger changed.

Not disappeared.

Changed.

“So the money wasn’t available.”

“No.”

“Then why did Ray say there was money?”

“Because he thought there would be.”

Emily looked at the documents again.

The situation was not what the message suggested.

Not a hidden fortune.

Not stolen money.

Not a secret deal.

Just another broken piece of a life that had become too complicated.

“Someone is trying to make me think Ray stole from me.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

“Who?”

He looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

The answer frustrated her.

But this time, she believed him.

“Then why send me here?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Because I got another message.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

“What message?”

Daniel pulled out his phone.

He showed her the screen.

It was from the same unknown number.

You failed once.

Don’t let Ray make you fail again.

Emily stared.

The words felt different now.

Less like a warning.

More like a threat.

“Who would want us fighting?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Someone who benefits from us not trusting each other.”

Emily looked down at the documents.

The insurance claim.

The medical records.

The messages.

Pieces of a puzzle she never asked to solve.

Her phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

Another message.

This time there was a picture attached.

Her heart stopped.

It showed Noah leaving the hospital with her two days earlier.

Taken from across the street.

Underneath it were six words.

Stop looking for answers.

Emily slowly lifted her eyes.

Daniel saw her expression.

“What is it?”

She did not answer immediately.

Because for the first time, the problem was no longer only about money.

Someone had been watching them.

And whoever it was had just moved closer.

Emily took a screenshot of the message before the number disappeared from her screen again.

She had learned enough over the past few days to know that fear made people careless.

She was scared.

But she was not going to be careless.

Daniel watched her.

“You should call the police.”

Emily looked at him.

“Would you believe me if you were them?”

Daniel hesitated.

“No.”

“Exactly.”

She placed the phone on the table.

“They would ask who sent it.”

“We don’t know.”

“They would ask what they want.”

“We don’t know.”

“They would ask if anything actually happened.”

Daniel looked at the picture.

“And something did.”

“Yes.”

Emily’s voice became quieter.

“Someone followed my son.”

The sentence changed the room.

Daniel looked toward the hallway as if Noah might somehow be standing there.

“He can’t be involved in this.”

Emily looked at him.

“He already is.”

That was the part nobody wanted to say.

Adults could argue about money.

They could argue about mistakes.

They could argue about who was right.

But Noah had no part in any of it.

He was just a child waiting for people to stop making decisions around him.

Emily left the apartment with the documents.

Daniel followed her outside.

“I want to help.”

She stopped near her car.

The old version of her would have rejected the offer immediately.

The woman who had survived by refusing help would have done exactly that.

But she was tired of surviving.

“I don’t know if I trust you.”

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.”

“I mean it.”

“I know.”

“But I need the truth.”

“You’ll get it.”

Emily studied him.

“Even if it makes you look bad?”

Daniel looked away.

“Yes.”

That answer stayed with her.

Because truth was becoming the only thing she cared about.

Not comfort.

Not pride.

Not who deserved forgiveness.

Just truth.

When she returned home, Ray was waiting outside her apartment building.

She almost kept walking.

Then she noticed the look on his face.

Something had happened.

“What now?”

Ray held up his hands slightly.

“I’m not here to pressure you.”

“That would be new.”

He accepted the comment.

“I spoke to someone from the hospital.”

Emily stopped.

“Why?”

May you like

“Because I wanted to verify something.”

She felt irritation rise.
