Chương 7

"And then?"

Michael sat on the edge of the hallway table.

"Then Claire found out he had been using her name."

"For what?"

"Loans."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Financial fraud?"

Michael nodded.

"She had no idea."

"How do you know?"

"Because I found the paperwork."

Daniel looked at the boxes.

"Then why didn't she report him?"

Michael was silent.

Daniel already knew the answer would not be simple.

"Because Thomas told her he would make sure Emma disappeared if she went to the police."

The sentence was almost whispered.

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

The little girl upstairs suddenly felt much closer.

"You're saying he threatened his own sister."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Thomas believed everything belonged to him once he touched it."

Michael looked at the documents.

"Money."

"People."

"Secrets."

Daniel felt something cold move through him.

The pieces were connecting, but not in a way that brought relief.

Only more questions.

"What happened to Emma?"

Michael's hands tightened.

"Thomas arranged for temporary custody through people he knew."

Daniel stared.

"That isn't possible."

"It is when someone has money and knows which people to pressure."

"Where was Claire?"

Michael looked down.

"Fighting."

The word was simple.

It carried years inside it.

"She fought for months."

"Then why did she stop?"

Michael's eyes lifted.

"She didn't."

The answer surprised him.

"Then what happened?"

"Thomas disappeared."

Daniel waited.

"He left the state."

"And Emma?"

Michael looked toward the ceiling.

"She stayed with me."

"Why you?"

"Because I was the only person Thomas trusted enough to ignore."

Daniel almost questioned the logic.

Then he remembered all the people who underestimated quiet people.

Maria.

Claire.

Maybe Michael too.

"You raised her."

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

"Does Claire see her?"

"Sometimes."

Daniel looked at him sharply.

"Sometimes?"

Michael rubbed his forehead.

"Claire believes being near Emma puts her in danger."

"Because of Thomas?"

"Because of what Thomas left behind."

The phrase bothered Daniel.

"What does that mean?"

Michael did not answer immediately.

The delay told Daniel there was another layer.

Before he could push, Michael's phone rang.

He looked at the screen and his expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

He answered.

"Hello?"

The voice on the other end was too quiet for Daniel to hear.

Michael listened for several seconds.

Then he stood.

"No."

A pause.

"Where are you?"

His face lost color.

Daniel watched him closely.

Michael ended the call.

"Who was that?"

Michael did not respond.

"Michael."

"It was Emma's school."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"What happened?"

Michael grabbed his jacket.

"They said someone came asking questions."

"Who?"

"They don't know."

Daniel followed him toward the door.

"Why would someone ask about a child?"

Michael stopped.

For the first time all afternoon, Daniel saw real fear.

"Because they know she exists."

They left the house together.

Daniel followed Michael's car toward the school.

Neither man spoke.

There was too much between them now.

Too many years.

Too many missing explanations.

When they arrived, a teacher met them outside the entrance.

She looked nervous.

"Mr. Vale?"

Michael nodded.

"What happened?"

The teacher glanced at Daniel.

"This is..."

"My friend," Michael said quickly.

The word felt strange coming from him.

The teacher accepted it.

"A man came about twenty minutes ago."

"What man?"

"He said he was a relative."

Michael's face tightened.

"Did he give a name?"

The teacher looked at the clipboard in her hand.

"He signed in as Thomas Vale."

Daniel and Michael looked at each other.

The past they thought was buried had just walked back into the present.

The teacher's hand tightened around the clipboard as if she regretted saying the name out loud.

Michael did not move.

For a moment, Daniel thought he had not heard her.

Then he saw the change in his face.

It was not surprise.

It was the expression of someone seeing a door he had spent years keeping locked suddenly open.

"Did he come inside?" Michael asked.

The teacher shook her head.

"No."

"Did he see Emma?"

"No."

"Did he talk to her?"

"No."

The answers came quickly, but they did not calm him.

Daniel noticed that.

Michael was not worried about what had already happened.

He was worried about what could happen next.

"What did he say?" Michael asked.

The teacher looked uncomfortable.

"He said he was her grandfather."

Michael's jaw tightened.

"He isn't."

"I know that now."

The teacher glanced toward the school entrance.

"We have security procedures, but he had information."

"What information?"

"Emma's full name."

Michael looked away.

Daniel felt the weight of that detail.

Knowing a child's name was normal.

Knowing exactly how to get close enough to ask questions was not.

"Did he leave anything?" Michael asked.

The teacher hesitated.

"Yes."

She reached into a folder and pulled out an envelope.

Michael did not take it immediately.

"Where did you get that?"

"He left it at the front desk."

"For Emma?"

The teacher nodded.

Daniel watched Michael stare at the envelope.

It was a simple white envelope.

No dramatic markings.

No threatening words.

That somehow made it worse.

"Did anyone touch it?" Michael asked.

"Only me."

Michael looked at Daniel.

A silent question passed between them.

Daniel understood.

They both knew the past few hours had changed the rules.

Things that seemed harmless yesterday were now possible evidence.

Michael took the envelope carefully.

He did not open it.

Not there.

Not with strangers watching.

"Thank you," he told the teacher.

She looked at Daniel before leaving.

"Are you family?"

The question hung there.

Daniel looked at Michael.

Michael looked back.

Neither answered.

The teacher gave a small nod and walked inside.

Outside the school, children ran across the playground.

Parents waited near cars.

Someone laughed near the entrance.

The normal world continued moving around a problem that had been buried for years.

Michael held the envelope.

"I need to call Claire."

Daniel looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because she needs to know."

"She already knows more than I do."

Michael's expression hardened.

"That's not fair."

Daniel looked at him.

May you like

"Fair?"

His voice stayed controlled, but barely.
