Chương 4

Ethan looked at the information.

“And now he knows where she is.”

The room went silent.

Outside, the evening sky became darker.

The mansion that once represented safety now felt like the center of a mystery that was growing deeper every hour.

Lily looked up from her drawing.

“Daddy?”

Daniel turned.

“What is it?”

She held up the paper.

It was a picture of their family.

Daniel.

Lily.

Victoria.

All standing together beneath a bright sun.

Daniel smiled gently.

But then he noticed something written at the bottom of the drawing.

A sentence Lily had written herself.

“We stay together.”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

And he knew that no matter what secrets waited ahead, he would fight to keep that promise.

The next morning, Daniel woke before sunrise.

He had barely slept because every time he closed his eyes, he saw Lily standing at the bottom of the stairs asking if someone was going to take her away.

That question stayed with him more than any secret.

He could handle uncertainty.

He could handle discovering painful truths about the past.

But he could not accept the idea that a seven-year-old child felt like she had to fight for her place in her own home.

He walked quietly into the kitchen and found Lily sitting at the table with her drawing in front of her.

She was wearing her favorite white sweater and holding a cup of warm milk with both hands.

“Good morning,” Daniel said softly.

Lily looked up and smiled.

It was a small smile, but it was real.

“Good morning, Daddy.”

Daniel sat beside her.

For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.

The quiet moment felt precious.

Then Lily pushed the drawing toward him.

“I added something.”

Daniel looked down.

The picture was the same family drawing from the night before.

But now there was another person standing near the house.

A woman with dark hair.

“Who is this?”

Lily looked at the paper.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel studied her expression.

“What do you mean?”

“I saw her in my dream.”

His face became serious.

“What happened in the dream?”

Lily looked uncomfortable.

“She was crying.”

Daniel waited.

“She kept saying she was sorry.”

A strange feeling moved through him.

“Did you know her?”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

She paused.

“But she felt familiar.”

Daniel did not want to frighten her, so he gently changed the subject.

“Do you want to go for a walk later?”

Lily nodded.

“Can Victoria come?”

The question surprised him.

After everything that happened, he expected Lily to be angry.

Instead, she still cared.

Daniel looked toward the doorway.

Victoria was standing there silently.

She had heard everything.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Lily looked at her.

“Are you still mad at me?”

Victoria’s expression immediately changed.

“No.”

Her voice was softer than usual.

“I was never mad at you.”

“Then why did you say those things?”

Victoria walked closer.

Every step seemed difficult.

“Because I was scared.”

Lily tilted her head.

“Adults get scared too?”

Victoria gave a sad smile.

“Yes.”

She sat across from Lily.

“Sometimes adults make mistakes when they are afraid.”

Lily looked down at her drawing.

“Did I do something wrong?”

Victoria shook her head quickly.

“No.”

Her voice became emotional.

“You were the best thing that ever happened to this family.”

Daniel watched silently.

For years, he had seen Victoria as someone who always controlled every situation.

But now he saw the person beneath that image.

A woman carrying guilt she never allowed anyone to see.

Later that morning, Ethan returned to the mansion with new information.

His expression told Daniel immediately that he had discovered something important.

“What did you find?”

Ethan placed several printed pages on the table.

“I traced Michael Hayes.”

Victoria immediately looked nervous.

“Where is he?”

Ethan looked at her.

“He has been living in the same city for the last two years.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then why did he wait until now?”

“That is the question.”

Ethan opened another file.

“He was not looking for Lily randomly.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means someone gave him information.”

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“You said only a few people knew.”

Victoria nodded slowly.

“I thought they did.”

Ethan leaned forward.

“There is something else.”

He pointed at a document.

“The original adoption records were changed.”

Daniel stared at the paper.

“Changed by who?”

Ethan looked serious.

“I do not know yet.”

Victoria whispered.

“But someone wanted Lily hidden.”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at her.

“And someone wanted her found.”

Daniel felt the weight of those words.

Two forces.

One trying to protect Lily.

One trying to reach her.

And his family was trapped between them.

A sudden sound came from outside.

A car stopping near the entrance.

Everyone looked toward the front windows.

Daniel immediately moved toward Lily.

“Stay with me.”

He looked outside.

A black sedan was parked near the gate.

Nobody got out.

Nobody moved.

After several seconds, the vehicle slowly drove away.

Ethan walked to the window.

“That was not random.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Do you think they were watching us?”

Ethan nodded.

“I do.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“They found us.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“You knew this could happen.”

“I feared it could happen.”

“That is different.”

Victoria looked at him.

“I wanted to believe I was wrong.”

Daniel wanted to argue.

But then he looked at Lily.

She was standing quietly beside him.

Listening.

Trying to understand a world that was becoming too complicated for her.

He lowered his voice.

“Not in front of her.”

Victoria nodded.

That evening, Daniel decided to take Lily away from the mansion temporarily.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he needed to protect her.

They packed only what they needed.

Lily carried her small blanket.

Daniel carried her favorite books.

Victoria packed silently.

The three of them leaving the mansion together felt strange.

Years ago, they had entered that house believing it would be the beginning of a perfect life.
