Chương 5

“Show me.”

Price looked at Morales.

Morales opened the laptop.

The footage began at 10:14 a.m.

David’s SUV entered the garage.

10:17.

David, Vanessa, and Noah stepped out near an elevator.

Megan leaned forward.

Noah carried his blue backpack.

He looked alive.

Annoyed, maybe.

He dragged one sneaker.

Megan’s nails bit her palms.

In the recording, Vanessa crouched and said something to him.

No sound.

Noah shrugged.

David checked his phone.

Then the three of them got back into the SUV.

“What is this?” Megan asked.

Morales said, “Keep watching.”

The SUV moved deeper into the garage.

At 10:24 it parked on level four.

David got out.

Vanessa got out.

They removed luggage.

Noah remained inside.

David walked toward the elevators.

Vanessa followed.

Then she stopped.

She pointed toward the vehicle.

David turned.

They appeared to argue.

He returned to the SUV.

Megan’s heart started beating so hard that sound became muffled.

David opened the rear passenger door.

Noah stepped out.

Megan inhaled sharply.

For one impossible second relief passed through her.

Her son had gotten out.

The knowledge was useless.

The boy was still dead.

On screen, David knelt in front of Noah.

They spoke for almost thirty seconds.

Then Noah climbed back into the SUV.

David shut the door.

Megan stood.

“What?”

Morales said her name.

“What did he do?”

“We don’t know what was said.”

“He put him back.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

“He put my child back in the car.”

Morales nodded.

Megan began pacing.

There was nowhere to go in the little room.

She turned at the wall.

“What did Vanessa say?”

“She says David told her Noah’s father was meeting them in the garage.”

Noah’s father.

Megan stopped.

“Eric?”

“Yes.”

“Eric was in Tennessee.”

“We confirmed that.”

“He has been in Tennessee for six months.”

“We confirmed that too.”

“He knew that.”

“Megan.”

“David knew that.”

Morales nodded.

“He and Mr. Carter exchanged texts the week before.”

Megan stared at her.

She hated hearing Eric called Mr. Carter because Eric and David shared the surname through marriage only in the detective’s confusion? No. Eric was Eric Lawson. Megan corrected automatically.

“Lawson.”

“What?”

“Noah’s father. Eric Lawson.”

“Right. Sorry.”

It was such a small mistake.

Megan almost appreciated it.

It reminded her that the police did not live inside her life.

They did not know everyone automatically.

They had to learn.

“What did David say?” she asked.

“He hasn’t given a full statement.”

“Because he lawyered up.”

“Yes.”

“So Vanessa thought Eric was coming?”

“That’s what she says.”

“And she left Noah there?”

“She says David told her Eric was already in the garage and would come up from level two after moving his car.”

Megan laughed once.

“No.”

Morales waited.

“No. She’s lying.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Because Vanessa plans bathroom breaks on road trips.”

Price looked down.

Megan rubbed her forehead.

“She doesn’t leave luggage unattended. She doesn’t trust hotel valets with her sunglasses. You’re telling me she walked away from an eight-year-old because David said somebody might come get him?”

“That’s what she told us.”

“She knew something.”

“Maybe.”

“You don’t believe her.”

Morales did not answer.

Megan leaned over the table.

“Show me the rest.”

The footage continued.

Vanessa and David walked toward the elevators.

Noah appeared at the rear window.

The angle Megan had shown at the funeral came from the next camera.

But now there was context.

David had not forgotten Noah was there.

He had spoken to him.

He had put him back inside.

The distinction made Megan feel physically sick.

At 10:31 David and Vanessa reached the elevators.

Vanessa entered.

David did not.

The doors closed.

David stood alone.

He looked at his phone.

Then back toward the SUV.

Megan stopped breathing.

David walked toward the car.

At 10:33 he reached it.

He opened the rear door.

Noah got out again.

They talked.

Noah pointed toward the elevators.

David shook his head.

Noah’s shoulders began moving.

Crying.

Even without sound, Megan knew.

She knew the way Noah cried when he was trying not to.

He wiped his face with both hands.

David crouched.

He took Noah by the shoulders.

He said something.

Then he stood.

Noah reached for him.

David removed the boy’s hands.

“No.”

The word came out of Megan.

On screen David opened the rear door.

Noah resisted.

Not violently.

He planted his feet.

David said something else.

Noah looked toward the elevator.

Then, finally, he climbed back into the SUV.

David shut the door.

He locked it.

He walked away.

Megan’s knees stopped working.

She sat.

Morales paused the video.

The room stayed quiet.

Megan stared at David’s frozen shape on screen.

“You said you didn’t know.”

“No,” Morales said gently. “I said we didn’t know what they said.”

“He knew Noah was there.”

“Yes.”

“He locked him in.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“We’re still working on that.”

Megan pressed both palms against her eyes.

Behind them, colors moved.

Red.

Black.

White.

She heard Price’s chair creak.

Morales slid the tissue box closer.

Megan lowered her hands.

“Don’t.”

Morales stopped.

“Please don’t do the tissue thing.”

“All right.”

“I’m not crying.”

“All right.”

Megan laughed suddenly.

“I mean, I probably am. I don’t know.”

She wiped her face with the back of her wrist.

Morales waited.

“What happened after?”

“At 10:42, David entered the terminal connector.”

“What time did the ship leave?”

“Five.”

“Why didn’t anyone find Noah?”

“The garage level was lightly used that day. The SUV had tinted rear windows. The alarm system didn’t trigger.”

“How long?”

Morales looked at Price.

Megan’s voice sharpened.

“How long was he alive?”

“We can’t determine an exact time.”

“How long?”

“The medical examiner gave us a range.”

“Tell me.”

Morales did.

Megan looked at the wall.

The number entered her life and stayed there.

For months afterward she would wake at 3:00 a.m. and calculate what she had been doing during those minutes.

May you like

At 10:40 she had been home.

At 11:05 she had taken a shower.
