Chương 5

“That’s reasonable,” Julian said automatically.

Nora’s face hardened.

Julian heard himself. “Unless there is more.”

“There is always more when a child hides bread.”

Eli picked cheese from the edge of his sandwich.

Nora came to the table. “He started keeping crackers in his desk because Mrs. Mercer sometimes sent him to bed without dessert.”

“Dessert is not food deprivation.”

“No. But once or twice, dinner went with it.”

Julian looked at Eli. “Is that true?”

The boy shrugged.

“How often?”

“I don’t know.”

“Once? Five times?”

“I don’t count.”

Nora sat across from them. In twenty-three years, Julian could not remember her sitting at the family breakfast table without being invited.

“She said he was being defiant,” Nora said. “Usually after he mentioned Mrs. Mara.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Nora’s mouth tightened.

Eli looked at Julian.

He closed his eyes. “Sorry.”

Nora let the silence sit until it became uncomfortable. “I tried.”

“When?”

“In February, when you returned from California. You were in the south office. I said Master Eli was having difficulty with the new rules.”

“I thought you meant screen time.”

“You were answering messages while I spoke.”

Julian remembered the conversation only as a vague irritation between two calls. He had been negotiating an insurance claim on the estate roof. Celeste had entered midway through, kissed his temple, and said Nora worried too much.

“What else?” he asked.

Nora looked toward Eli. “Perhaps not tonight.”

“Tonight is already here.”

Eli pushed the plate away. “Can I go upstairs?”

Julian wanted him where he could see him. The impulse was about Julian’s fear, not Eli’s need.

“Yes. Keep your door open, please.”

“Why?”

“So I know you’re all right.”

“You can knock.”

Julian nodded. “I can knock.”

Eli lifted the sleeved photograph and left.

They waited until his footsteps reached the upper corridor.

Nora clasped both hands on the table. “Mrs. Mercer is not cruel every day.”

“That is a strange defense.”

“It is not a defense. It is why I doubted myself.”

Julian said nothing.

“She can be patient with him. She reads to him when he is ill. She knows he dislikes seams in his socks. She spent three nights making that solar-system costume because the one you ordered arrived broken.”

“I remember.”

“You thanked her in the car while looking at your phone.”

Julian looked at his coffee.

Nora continued. “Then there are days when any mention of Mrs. Mara changes her. She becomes precise. She says the photograph must go back in a drawer. The song must be changed. The story is inappropriate. Master Eli must not manipulate people with grief.”

“How long?”

“More than a year.”

“And you said nothing clearly enough for me to understand.”

Nora flinched. He regretted the phrasing before she answered.

“No,” she said. “I did not.”

“Why?”

“Because this is my employment. Because my sister’s medical insurance is through the plan you arranged. Because Mrs. Mercer told me I was confusing loyalty with authority. Because sometimes she was right that I overstepped. Because you looked happier after marrying her, and I did not want to be the old servant guarding a dead woman’s place.”

Julian stared at the table’s scratched surface. Mara had insisted they use it daily rather than preserve it for holidays. Celeste had wanted it refinished. Julian had refused without explaining why.

Nora rubbed one thumb over the other. “And because I was afraid you would choose not to believe me.”

“I might have.”

“Yes.”

Her honesty felt cleaner than forgiveness would have.

Samir arrived twenty minutes later carrying a laptop and a locked external drive. He was forty-five, broad-shouldered, with the permanently patient expression of a man accustomed to explaining security procedures to people who believed wealth exempted them from procedures.

They met in the small estate office beside the service hall. Nora remained upstairs near Eli’s room.

Samir set the laptop on Julian’s desk. “The system retains thirty days locally and ninety days in encrypted cloud storage. Motion events are indexed. Thomas preserved the relevant period and restricted administrative access to the two of us.”

“Who else could have viewed it before the restriction?”

“Three people had credentials. Me, Thomas, and Mrs. Mercer.”

Julian looked up. “Celeste had access?”

“She requested it in March after packages went missing.”

“Did she use it tonight?”

Samir opened the access log. “Her account signed in from her phone four minutes after leaving the house.”

Julian’s skin went cold.

“What did she do?”

“Attempted to delete the conservatory clip.”

“Attempted?”

“Her permission level allows viewing and export, not deletion.”

“Did she export it?”

“No.”

“Could she have recorded the screen?”

“Yes.”

Julian sat back. “Can you disable her account?”

“Already done.”

“Was that your decision?”

“It was Thomas’s request after the deletion attempt. I approved it.”

“Good.”

Samir studied him. “Before we view this, you should decide whether I am acting as an employee, a potential witness, or both.”

“What do you recommend?”

“That you call your attorney.”

Julian almost said the family did not need lawyers for an argument. The thought was so absurd that it never reached his mouth.

He called Rebecca Shaw, who had handled estate matters for twelve years and once told him that wealthy families used the phrase private matter when they meant evidence with upholstery around it.

She answered from a restaurant. After hearing the outline, she asked whether Celeste was injured, whether Eli was safe, and whether anyone had contacted law enforcement.

“No.”

“Do not coach your son. Do not circulate the video. Preserve all footage, access logs, messages, and witness information. Get Celeste medically examined. Sleep separately. We’ll discuss next steps in the morning.”

“She tried to delete the clip.”

Rebecca went silent for a beat. “Preserve that log too.”

“Can I watch it?”

May you like

“You were present. Watching it with the security director is reasonable. Do not edit, annotate, or send it.”

Julian put the call on speaker so Samir could confirm instructions. Then they opened the recording.
