Chương 1

"""Claire Mercer tore the phone out of Nora Bell’s hand and smashed it against the marble before Nora understood that the conversation had become dangerous.
The black case struck one corner first. Glass burst across the white floor in a bright little scatter, and the sound went through the foyer like a gunshot. Nora instinctively bent toward the curve of her stomach.
“What the hell—”
Claire shoved her.
It was not the wild, flailing push of somebody who had lost control. That was what frightened Nora later, when she replayed the moment in her mind. Claire’s hands landed high on her shoulders, nowhere near the baby, and drove her backward with measured force. Nora stumbled three steps and hit the padded entry bench hard enough to knock the breath from her. One cream heel slipped sideways. Her hands locked around her belly.
For perhaps two seconds neither woman moved.
Claire stood above her in a silver evening gown, blonde hair perfectly arranged except for a strand that had fallen across one cheek. The chandelier caught her diamond bracelet. Her face was calm.
Then she leaned closer.
“Tell him that baby is his,” she said quietly, “or I’ll bury you with his first wife.”
Nora’s mouth opened, but nothing came out.
The first wife.
Rachel.
Even after eighteen months, hearing Rachel reduced to two words made something cold move beneath Nora’s ribs.
Somewhere deeper in the house, a door closed.
Claire heard it too.
Her expression changed before Nora could speak.
It was astonishing.
The hardness drained from her eyes. Her lower lip loosened. Her shoulders folded inward. She looked suddenly pale and frightened and young.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
Footsteps approached across the hall.
Claire glanced at the broken phone, then at Nora. For one brief instant, the old expression returned.
A tiny smile.
“Now watch who he believes.”
Before Nora could move, Claire lowered herself deliberately onto the marble. One knee, then the other. She turned slightly onto her hip, gathered the silver fabric beneath her, and clutched her pregnant belly with both hands.
When Daniel Mercer entered the foyer, his wife was on the floor and Nora was standing over her.
He stopped.
Nora watched the scene arrange itself inside his face.
Claire on the marble.
Nora breathing too fast.
A smashed phone between them.
Then Daniel crossed the distance in three long strides and dropped between the two women.
“Claire?”
“She attacked me.”
Claire’s voice trembled perfectly.
Daniel looked at her stomach. “Are you hurt?”
“She pushed me.” Claire swallowed and pointed toward Nora. “She tried to hurt the baby.”
“No.”
Nora’s voice sounded thin even to herself.
Daniel turned.
He was still wearing the charcoal suit from the foundation dinner upstairs. His tie had loosened slightly, and there was a faint line between his eyebrows that Nora remembered from years ago, when he used to stand in Rachel’s office doorway pretending not to be irritated by late meetings.
“Nora,” he said.
Just her name.
Not accusation. Not belief.
Not yet.
She could have tried to explain.
Claire had counted on that.
Nora understood suddenly that any explanation she offered would sound like panic next to Claire’s beautifully controlled fear.
So she looked past Daniel.
Mounted on the pale stone wall behind him was the smart-home security monitor that controlled the mansion’s cameras, locks, lights, and gates.
A small green indicator glowed beneath the screen.
Nora stared at it.
Then she looked back at Daniel.
“Don’t believe me,” she said.
Her breathing shook once. She forced herself to slow it.
“Believe the camera behind you.”
Silence settled over the foyer.
Daniel’s eyes stopped moving.
Claire did not.
For the first time since he had entered, she looked at the wall.
Daniel saw that.
Nora saw him see it.
He rose slowly.
The security screen was displaying four live feeds. Driveway. Rear terrace. Service corridor.
Foyer.
On the fourth square, three figures were visible beneath the chandelier.
Daniel touched the screen.
The feed expanded.
He dragged backward through the buffered recording.
Claire stood up too quickly.
“Daniel, wait.”
He did not answer.
On the screen, Nora entered the foyer holding her phone. Claire appeared from the west hallway. There was no audio in the buffered view, but there did not need to be.
Claire took the phone.
Claire smashed it.
Claire shoved Nora.
Claire waited.
Then Claire lowered herself carefully to the floor.
Daniel watched the sequence twice.
Nobody spoke during the second viewing.
When he finally turned around, there was no dramatic rage in his face. That would have been easier.
His jaw had tightened.
That was all.
Claire stared at him.
The hand resting on her stomach went still.
Daniel looked at his wife for several seconds, then asked, very quietly, “You lied about the baby too, didn’t you?”
Claire’s face emptied.
It lasted less than a second.
But Nora saw it.
Daniel did too.
Claire recovered first.
“What?”
Daniel continued looking at her.
“That’s what you think?” she said. “After everything? You see ten seconds of footage and suddenly you think—”
“You staged an assault.”
“She came into my house.”
“You smashed her phone.”
“You don’t know what she was doing here.”
“You pushed a pregnant woman.”
Claire’s eyes flashed toward Nora. “Ask her why she’s here.”
“I came to tell him the truth.”
“Of course you did.”
“Claire.”
Daniel did not raise his voice.
His wife looked at him.
“Stop.”
Something in the single word changed the room.
Nora lowered herself onto the bench. Her knees had started trembling. She pressed both palms against the sides of her stomach, waiting for movement.
There.
A firm roll beneath her left hand.
She shut her eyes for one second.
Daniel noticed.
“Are you hurt?”
“I don’t think so.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“I hit the bench. Not my stomach.”
“We should get you checked.”
“I know.”
Claire gave a small incredulous laugh.
May you like
Both of them looked at her.
“That’s good,” she said. “This is good. She walks in here, threatens me, and now I’m the dangerous one.”
