Chương 6

Dane lowered his voice. “Cole asked me to create controlled ambiguity.”

Lauren almost admired the phrase.

“About his affair?”

“About his personal transition.”

“Was that before or after he told me he was in a meeting?”

“I don’t know what he told you privately.”

“You knew his children were home.”

“I knew the family schedule had changed.”

“Noah and Lily were sick.”

“I did not know that.”

“Would it have mattered?”

Dane exhaled. “Lauren, I have represented your family for fourteen years. I was at your wedding. I am trying to prevent this from becoming uglier than it already is.”

“You helped make it public.”

“Cole believed the marriage was effectively over.”

“Did I believe that?”

“I can’t answer for you.”

“You could have asked.”

“That isn’t how my role works.”

Lauren looked at Priya, who wrote something on a yellow pad.

“What is your role now?” Lauren asked.

Dane hesitated.

“My role is uncertain.”

Cole had already lost the ability to protect him.

The realization moved through the silence between them.

Dane said, “He asked me to release information about your mental health.”

Mr. Harris, standing near the kitchen, turned sharply.

“What information?” Lauren asked.

“Nothing has been released.”

“What information, Dane?”

“Records from a private wellness center.”

“I attended three grief counseling appointments after my mother died.”

“I know.”

“How did he get those records?”

“I don’t know that he did. He showed me a summary.”

“Send it to Priya.”

“I can’t distribute confidential material.”

“You were willing to distribute it to reporters.”

“That was a different conversation.”

“It isn’t anymore.”

Dane promised to contact his own attorney.

Before ending the call, he said, “Cole isn’t thinking clearly.”

Lauren looked at the bruises around her wrist.

“He thinks clearly enough when he’s frightened,” she said.

The emergency custody petition arrived before noon.

Cole alleged that Lauren had removed two medically fragile infants from their primary residence during a mental health crisis and concealed their location. He requested immediate disclosure of the children’s whereabouts and temporary sole custody until Lauren underwent evaluation.

The filing included an affidavit from Cole describing her as sleep-deprived, paranoid, and fixated on financial conspiracies.

It also included a photograph of the nursery.

The empty cribs appeared beneath the dim night-light, the baby monitor glowing on the dresser.

Someone had entered the apartment after Lauren left and photographed the exact image Cole had found.

Dane denied taking it.

Building security records showed Cole had allowed a crisis consultant and a private investigator upstairs at three forty in the morning.

Lauren read the affidavit twice.

He had included true details. She was sleep-deprived. She had accused him of financial misconduct. She had left without telling him where the twins were. She had recorded a message designed to hurt him.

The lies did not replace the truth. They leaned on it.

“This is what he does,” she said.

Mr. Harris looked over the filing. “This is what lawyers do with what clients give them.”

“You’re defending him?”

“I’m warning you not to underestimate the argument because you dislike the person making it.”

Lauren’s face warmed. “I didn’t say I disliked it.”

“You said, ‘This is what he does,’ which means you want the court to understand your marriage before it understands the timeline. Courts are not always patient enough for that.”

“So what do we do?”

“We disclose the hospital visit, the doctors’ instructions, the safe location to the judge under seal, and the fact that the children are with you. We produce the medical records. We request temporary protective conditions.”

“I don’t want him near them.”

“Then we need evidence tied to their safety, not only yours.”

“He grabbed me.”

“That matters.”

“He left them sick to go to a party.”

“That matters morally. It may not decide custody.”

“He is using stolen money to hire people to call me insane.”

“That may matter very much if we can prove it.”

Lauren stood so quickly the chair legs scraped the floor. “Everything is may.”

“Yes.”

“He gets to say whatever he wants immediately, and I have to prove every bruise, every invoice, every conversation.”

“Yes.”

“That’s not justice.”

“No,” Mr. Harris said. “It’s procedure.”

She hated him for the answer.

By afternoon, the trust’s forensic team found the first major discrepancy.

Lane Creative Partners had received payments from three Bennett-controlled subsidiaries for events that never occurred. Sierra’s expenses were only part of the total. More than four million dollars had moved through consulting entities over two years, some of it into an investment fund Cole controlled indirectly.

The investigation could no longer be explained as an affair hidden in corporate accounts.

Cole called again.

This time Lauren answered.

“You filed for custody,” she said.

His breath came quickly through the line. “Where are they?”

“Safe.”

“I need to see them.”

“You asked a court to take them from me.”

“I asked a court to protect them.”

“From me.”

“From whatever Harris is making you do.”

Lauren closed her eyes.

There it was: the path back. Cole offered it almost tenderly. Blame Harris. Blame exhaustion. Blame the photograph. She could return, call the investigation a misunderstanding, and let Cole announce a private family reconciliation. He would forgive her publicly. In private, the doors would close.

“No one made me leave,” she said.

“You were overwhelmed.”

“I was clear.”

“You left a recorded threat in the nursery.”

“I left a warning.”

“You took my children.”

“Our children.”

“Then let me see them.”

Lauren heard genuine pain beneath the demand. It confused her more than cruelty would have.

“Noah keeps coughing,” she said.

Cole became quiet.

“How high is his fever?”

“Lower now.”

“And Lily?”

“She took a bottle.”

“Put me on video.”

“No.”

“Lauren, please.”

The word sounded unfamiliar in his voice.

She looked toward the portable cribs. Noah slept with one fist beside his face. Lily’s stuffed rabbit rested against her shoulder.

Lauren activated video but pointed the camera only at the babies.

Cole’s image appeared in a small corner of the screen. He was still wearing the white shirt from the benefit. The bow tie hung around his neck. His hair had lost its careful shape, and there was a red mark along his jaw where he had been rubbing it.
