Chương 12

Before being led outside, Lorenzo turned to her. “Carlo is alive because he ran before Dominic expected him to.”

Elena’s mouth trembled. “He learned to run from all of you.”

Lorenzo nodded and went out.

The agents’ vehicles disappeared among the trees.

Dawn arrived without color.

Isabella sat at the kitchen table while Elena made coffee neither of them drank. The wedding ring remained at the estate of the retired judge, beside Lorenzo’s watch, until Agent Chen returned it in a small plastic property bag.

Isabella placed the bag inside her travel case.

At seven twelve, Claire’s investigator called. Carlo was awake.

Elena spoke to him on video from the living room. Isabella did not listen intentionally, but the house was small.

“Mama,” Carlo said, his voice slurred.

“You idiot,” Elena answered.

“I know.”

“You look terrible.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying you know. Everyone says that when they mean they want the conversation to end.”

Carlo gave a weak laugh that became a groan.

Elena covered her face with one hand. “Did they hurt you?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell them anything?”

“Everything they already knew.”

“About Matteo?”

A long pause followed.

“Yes.”

Elena’s shoulders bent.

“Will you tell the agents?” she asked.

Carlo looked away from the screen. “I have a daughter.”

“And Matteo had a mother.”

“I know.”

“There is that word again.”

The call ended without a promise.

By noon, federal agents had established covert surveillance around the DeSantis estate. The building appeared empty. No smoke rose from the chimneys. No vehicles entered or left.

Dominic sent another message from an untraceable number.

Last chance.

Isabella did not answer.

At one thirty, a camera showed movement inside the kitchen. A man crossed behind the curtains carrying a metal can.

Agents obtained an emergency warrant based on the threats, the suspected destruction of evidence, and Lorenzo’s prior disclosures. The process still took longer than Isabella could tolerate. People made calls. A judge reviewed an affidavit. Supervisors discussed risk. Nobody behaved like the films in which a single urgent sentence sent doors flying open.

At three sixteen, the tactical team entered.

Dominic was not there.

The man carrying the can was a maintenance worker who claimed he had been paid cash to clean the stove vents. The can contained degreaser.

The recipe box sat untouched on the island.

Inside were only recipe cards.

For several minutes, Isabella felt foolish enough to be angry at Matteo. Dead men could not explain incomplete clues. They left survivors to turn every sentimental object into a map.

Agent Chen called from the estate.

“There is something beneath the box,” she said.

The wooden bottom had been replaced with a false panel. Under it lay a small brass key and a storage receipt dated two days before Matteo’s death.

The facility was in Queens.

The storage unit had been rented under the name of a foundation vendor. The account remained paid through automatic withdrawals.

Agents searched it that evening.

They found file boxes containing copied ledgers, contracts, property transfers, and photographs of meetings at Harbor Seventeen. Matteo had also kept a digital recorder, though several files were corrupted.

One file captured Dominic’s voice discussing the need to “teach the accountant’s brother-in-law what family means.” Another recorded Lorenzo refusing permission to kill anyone connected to Isabella.

The recording did not absolve him. It confirmed that he had ordered Matteo taken. It also contradicted Dominic’s later claim that Lorenzo demanded the murder.

The last usable file had been recorded on the night Matteo died.

His voice sounded nervous and irritated.

“If you’re hearing this, Bella, you’re going to say I was being dramatic. Maybe I am. You always think I’m dramatic when I’m right and concerned when I’m wrong.”

Isabella listened in an interview room beside Agent Chen.

Matteo breathed close to the recorder.

“I’m not doing this because I hate your husband. I do hate his hair, but that is separate. I’m doing it because the foundation is moving money, and people who ask about it get told to stop asking. Lorenzo knows. Maybe he tells himself he’s less cruel than the men around him. That’s a very comfortable kind of goodness.”

The recording clicked as Matteo adjusted it.

“The copies are in the place he won’t look. Not because he hates recipes. Because the box came from me, and he thinks everything sentimental between us is beneath his attention.”

Isabella pressed both hands to her mouth.

“If something happens, don’t try to become brave all at once. You’re terrible when you’re dramatic. Call Mom. Call Nadia. Find someone boring with a law degree.”

Despite the tears on her face, Isabella laughed.

Matteo’s voice softened.

“And don’t stay with a dangerous man because he is gentle with you. That only proves he can choose.”

The recording ended.

Isabella listened to it twice more.

The third time, she stopped before the final sentence.

Carlo agreed to speak with federal prosecutors the following morning.

His decision did not come from courage alone. Agent Chen told him Dominic’s men had already positioned evidence to blame him for the weapons in the van. Claire arranged independent counsel. Elena sat beside his hospital bed and refused to promise she would forgive him if he remained silent.

Carlo described driving Matteo to Harbor Seventeen. He said Lorenzo had ordered an intimidation, not a killing. Dominic ignored repeated calls once the beating began. When Lorenzo arrived, he demanded an ambulance but also ordered everyone to leave before police came. Carlo heard Matteo ask for Isabella. Lorenzo stood three feet away and did not make the call.

The testimony closed one dispute and opened another.

Dominic vanished.

For nine days, authorities searched properties linked to him, questioned associates, and reviewed traffic cameras. News outlets reported the federal investigation before prosecutors were ready to announce it. Anonymous sources described Lorenzo as a suspected organized-crime leader negotiating cooperation.

By the second afternoon, reporters gathered outside Teresa Bellini’s brick house in Astoria.

Someone leaked Isabella’s clinic visit on a gossip site. The article referred to “a possible mafia heir” and included the date of her ultrasound.
