Chương 14

A reporter asked whether Lorraine Bennett had stolen the money.

Natalie replied, “That is not a word I’m using before the records are reviewed.”

Another asked whether Ethan knew.

Natalie hesitated.

The pause appeared on every local news clip that evening.

“No,” she said finally. “He did not know.”

She did not add that he should have.

The omission was not forgiveness.

It was accuracy.

Inside the car, Ethan said, “Thank you.”

She fastened her seat belt. “Don’t make it sentimental.”

“I wasn’t.”

“You were close.”

The charity board suspended Lorraine that afternoon.

By night, she had issued a statement through a public relations consultant. It described her as a grieving widow who had made “temporary internal allocations during an unprecedented family and business crisis.” It accused unnamed relatives of exploiting private medical circumstances to gain control of family property.

Brooke received thirty-seven messages from Lorraine’s friends.

Some urged her to support her mother.

Some asked what really happened.

One called her ungrateful.

Brooke came to the apartment and read each message aloud until Natalie asked her to stop.

“I don’t know what to say to people,” Brooke said.

“You don’t have to say anything tonight,” Natalie replied.

“They think I did it.”

“Did what?”

“Everything.”

“You did some things.”

Brooke looked hurt.

Natalie did not soften the answer.

“You took the car. You used the lease. You let me clean up after you while I was sick.”

“I said I was sorry.”

“You said words.”

“What else do you want?”

“I don’t know yet.”

Brooke stood. “That’s convenient.”

Ethan looked up from the kitchen counter.

Natalie’s expression changed.

Brooke saw it and immediately regretted the sentence.

“I didn’t mean—”

“You did,” Natalie said.

“I’m under pressure too.”

“I know.”

“My mother may go to prison.”

“I know.”

“My life is gone.”

Natalie touched the edge of her scarf.

“My hair will grow back,” she said. “People keep telling me that as if it makes selling it less real. Maybe your life grows back too. That doesn’t mean you didn’t trade mine for it.”

Brooke left without taking her handbag.

She returned ten minutes later because her keys were inside.

The awkwardness punctured the confrontation.

Natalie handed her the bag.

Brooke muttered, “This is the worst exit anyone has ever made.”

Natalie almost smiled.

Brooke noticed and nearly smiled too.

Then the feeling passed.

The investigation widened.

The charity’s accountants confirmed that $146,000 had been moved through Sonoran Lifestyle. Most was still missing. The board’s insurer became involved. Banks froze related accounts. The landlord from Brooke’s boutique filed a claim against Ethan’s company based on the forged guarantee.

Daniel warned that recovery could take months or years.

The villa became the central asset.

Lorraine still had the right to live there, but the trust prohibited using it to secure personal debts. If the disputed amendments were voided, she could remain but would lose financial control.

She refused to leave the office.

For two weeks, she communicated through attorneys.

Then she asked Natalie to meet alone.

Ethan said no before Natalie finished reading the message.

She looked at him.

He closed his mouth.

“What do you think?” he asked.

“I think she chose me because she believes you’re easier to control when I’m afraid.”

“Are you afraid?”

“Yes.”

“Then don’t go.”

“That is not the same as not wanting to.”

“What would you gain?”

“I might learn what she still has.”

“Or she might manipulate you.”

“She probably will.”

“So why—”

Natalie waited.

Ethan stopped.

“Because it’s my decision,” she said.

He nodded, though every part of him resisted.

The meeting took place at Daniel’s office with attorneys nearby but not in the room. Natalie agreed to recording. Lorraine objected, then accepted when Natalie stood to leave.

They sat across from each other at a small conference table.

Lorraine wore navy instead of white. Without the villa behind her, she looked less imposing, though the effect lasted only until she spoke.

“You have become very confident.”

Natalie adjusted the sleeve over a bruise that had nearly faded. “No.”

“You embarrassed me publicly.”

“You embarrassed yourself privately for a long time.”

Lorraine smiled faintly. “Ethan’s phrasing.”

“My own.”

“You believe he will stay through treatment.”

Natalie’s face did not change.

Lorraine leaned back.

“He disappears when a problem has no efficient solution. His father did the same.”

Natalie looked toward the glass wall. Ethan stood beyond it with Daniel, unable to hear the conversation without the audio feed Daniel had muted at her request.

“Did you ask me here to discuss my marriage?”

“I asked you here because you have the greatest influence over him.”

“You spent seven months proving I didn’t.”

“He came back for you.”

“He came back because Daniel found the account transfers.”

Lorraine’s confidence flickered.

That was not the sequence she had expected.

Natalie continued. “You thought the money would bring him home faster than I could.”

Lorraine’s mouth tightened.

The inference was correct.

She had moved Ethan’s personal funds on August 1, knowing the transaction alert would reach his accountant and then Daniel. She had calculated that Ethan would return furious about the money, not frightened for Natalie.

She had underestimated what he would see in the courtyard.

“You wanted him to come,” Natalie said.

“I needed him to finish the sale.”

“You needed the payout.”

“It would have restored everything.”

“You were going to replace the accounts.”

“Yes.”

The word came too quickly.

Natalie did not react.

Lorraine realized the admission and adjusted.

“I intended to make the family whole.”

“With money that wasn’t yours.”

“With money created through assets my husband built.”

“Ethan built the company.”

“With family support.”

“You mean signatures.”

Lorraine looked at the recorder.

Natalie followed her gaze. “You can stop.”

“No.”

“Then why did you ask me here?”

Lorraine’s eyes returned to her.

For the first time, something beneath control became visible.

May you like

Fear.

“Tell Ethan to authorize the loan against the villa,” she said. “The charity can be repaid. Your account can be restored. Brooke can settle the lease. The sale can close.”
