Chương 12

She walked from room to room without knowing what to do.

For four years she had wanted silence.

Now it felt obscene.

She started laundry.

Stopped it.

Made coffee.

Forgot it.

At twelve thirty she called Marisol.

“They’re with him.”

“Yes.”

“What do I do?”

Marisol paused.

“Are you asking legally?”

“No.”

“Then I have no idea.”

Elena laughed despite herself.

“Helpful.”

“I’m your attorney. I’m not qualified to tell you how to spend three child-free hours.”

“I used to have hobbies.”

“Name one.”

Elena opened her mouth.

Nothing came.

Marisol said, “That’s depressing.”

“Thank you.”

“Go take a nap.”

Elena did.

She slept for two hours and woke feeling guilty.

When she returned to Daniel’s apartment, Grace had flour in her hair.

Theo was angry because Daniel had cut a sandwich diagonally.

Mateo was asleep on the sofa with one sock missing.

Daniel looked wrecked.

Elena surveyed the kitchen.

“What happened?”

“We made pancakes.”

“At one?”

“They wanted pancakes.”

“They always want pancakes.”

“I know that now.”

Elena picked up a bowl.

Daniel touched her wrist.

“Don’t.”

She looked at him.

“I’ll clean.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

She released the bowl.

Mateo stirred on the sofa.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“He asked when you were coming back four times.”

Elena nodded.

“I told him after lunch.”

“Good.”

“I didn’t tell him you always come back.”

Her eyes lifted.

Daniel continued.

“I thought that was yours to say.”

For several seconds she could not answer.

Then she nodded once.

“Thank you.”

Spring came.

The public attention faded.

The internal investigation did not.

Harold Wynn resigned from representing the Carter family.

Claire Mercer left Carter Hospitality with a negotiated severance and, eventually, sent Elena a letter.

Elena did not open it for three weeks.

When she did, she found no excuses.

Claire wrote that Robert had instructed her, but she had obeyed because the job paid for her husband’s medical insurance and because saying no to powerful people had seemed more dangerous than hurting a woman she did not know.

She wrote that none of that made what she did right.

Elena read the letter twice.

Then she placed it beside the old settlement check.

She did not forgive Claire.

She also stopped imagining her as a faceless villain.

That was more uncomfortable.

Robert requested a meeting with Elena through attorneys.

She refused.

He asked again two months later.

She refused again.

The third request came handwritten.

No lawyer.

No letterhead.

Elena read it at her kitchen counter while Theo argued with Grace about a green marker.

Robert asked for twenty minutes.

He did not ask to see the children.

Elena agreed.

They met in a coffee shop.

Public.

No family property.

Robert arrived early.

Elena arrived later on purpose.

He stood when she approached.

She sat without offering her hand.

Robert sat.

For several seconds he studied the table.

“I owe you an apology.”

Elena said nothing.

He continued.

“What I did was wrong.”

“That sounded difficult.”

“It was.”

“I’m not impressed.”

“I didn’t expect you to be.”

She looked at him.

That answer was better than she wanted.

Robert folded his hands.

“I believed I was protecting my son.”

“You were protecting yourself.”

His eyes lifted.

“Daniel said the same thing.”

“Then listen to one of us.”

Robert’s mouth tightened.

Elena continued.

“You decided I was dangerous before I had done anything.”

“I believed the risk—”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“No business language.”

Robert looked away.

A barista dropped a metal pitcher behind the counter.

The crash made both of them flinch.

Elena almost laughed at the ridiculousness of it.

Robert looked older than he had at the hotel.

Not ruined.

Not transformed.

Just older.

“You kept the sonogram,” she said.

His face changed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked at the table.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s not true.”

A long silence.

Finally Robert said, “My brother had a son.”

Elena waited.

“He was six when the divorce started. Afterward, James kept photographs everywhere. In his office. His car. His wallet. Pictures of a child he barely saw.”

Robert rubbed one thumb against his palm.

“I think when I saw your sonogram, I wanted proof that I had prevented something before it became real.”

Elena felt cold.

“That is one of the worst things anyone has ever said to me.”

Robert nodded.

“I know.”

“No. You understand the sentence.”

His eyes lifted.

For the first time, she saw Daniel in his face.

Not the eyes.

The reaction.

Robert almost smiled.

“He says that now.”

“I taught him.”

“I assumed.”

Elena pushed her coffee away.

“Why did you keep it?”

Robert answered after a while.

“Because destroying it felt worse.”

She stared at him.

“That doesn’t make you better.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying that.”

To her surprise, Robert laughed.

It was brief and tired.

“Apparently that runs in the family.”

Elena did not forgive him.

She did something harder.

She allowed him to remain human.

Then she left.

Robert did not meet the children for another four months.

Daniel never asked Elena again after the first refusal.

When she finally offered, it was because Theo had become interested in family trees after a preschool project.

He wanted to know whether Daniel had a dad.

“Yes,” Elena said.

“Is he my grandpa?”

Technically, yes.

Emotionally, she had no idea.

She called Daniel that night.

“Theo asked about your father.”

Daniel was silent.

“What did you say?”

“That biology is annoying.”

He laughed.

“I’m serious.”

“I know.”

She rubbed her forehead.

“I think they should meet him.”

Daniel did not answer immediately.

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I know.”

“He hasn’t earned it.”

“This isn’t for him.”

Daniel understood.

The meeting lasted one hour.

Robert brought no gifts because Daniel told him not to.

Grace asked why his hair was white.

Mateo asked whether he owned the hotel.

Robert said partly.

Theo asked whether that meant Daniel owned it too.

Daniel said, “Less every day.”

Robert gave him a look.

May you like

Theo missed it.

Grace showed Robert the rabbit.
