Chương 13

Daniel stared at it.

Elena stepped beside him.

Her fingers brushed his.

Neither spoke.

Michael’s attorney cleared his throat.

“We should remain focused.”

Judith said, “Then stop talking.”

Steven looked offended.

Michael carried the banker’s box from the dining room.

He placed it on the table.

Judith stopped Daniel from touching it.

“We inventory first.”

Michael laughed.

“Of course.”

They opened the box together.

Estate documents.

Old mortgage statements.

Tax bills.

The limited power of attorney.

Copies of Daniel’s driver’s license.

A scanned passport.

And, near the bottom, their father’s letter.

Daniel recognized the handwriting.

Michael reached for it.

Judith stopped him.

“Whose possession?”

Michael looked at Daniel.

“His.”

Judith handed it over.

The envelope said DANNY AND MIKE.

Daniel sat down.

Michael remained standing.

Elena moved toward the kitchen.

Daniel opened the envelope.

The letter was shorter than he expected.

Their father had written it during the last month of his life.

Not a legal document.

Not a will.

Just paper.

He wrote that he had spent years helping Michael financially because Michael always seemed one emergency away from becoming the man he wanted to be.

He wrote that Daniel rarely asked for anything and that this had fooled him into believing Daniel needed less.

He wrote that neither son owed him gratitude.

Then came the house.

I am leaving the house to Danny because he has made a home there with Elena and Lily. Mike, this is not punishment. I already gave you what I could while I was living. I know you think money only counts if everyone gets the same amount at the same time. Life did not work out that neat for us.

Daniel stopped reading.

Michael stared at the wall.

Daniel continued.

Do not turn my choices into a reason to hate each other. I made them. Not Danny. Not Mike. Me.

Daniel lowered the paper.

Nobody spoke.

Finally Michael said, “Convenient.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

“He gets to die and make it sound wise.”

A laugh escaped Daniel.

Michael looked at him sharply.

Daniel covered his mouth.

“I’m sorry.”

“No, you’re not.”

“No. That was just—”

“Funny?”

“A little.”

Michael stared.

Then, against every expectation, he laughed too.

It lasted only a second.

Steven Fox looked horrified.

Judith looked bored.

Elena, standing near the sink, wiped at her eyes.

Michael sat across from Daniel.

“He was an asshole sometimes.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yeah.”

“He loved you more.”

“No.”

“He trusted you more.”

“That might be true.”

Michael looked down.

“I hated that.”

Daniel folded the letter.

“I know.”

“No, you didn’t.”

Daniel thought about denying it.

Then stopped.

“No. I didn’t.”

Michael rubbed both hands together.

“I kept thinking if I got the company through one more month, I could replace the money. Then another month. Then the bank line got cut. Then payroll.”

“So you created North Ridge.”

“Yes.”

Steven Fox shifted.

“Michael, we have discussed—”

“I know what we discussed.”

Judith watched carefully.

Daniel said, “Did you forge the deed?”

Steven stood.

“This meeting is over.”

Michael did not look at him.

Daniel waited.

Michael stared at his brother.

Then he shook his head.

“I’m not giving you that.”

Daniel felt anger surge.

“Giving me?”

“Yes.”

“You think the truth is a gift?”

“I think you have enough.”

“That’s not your decision.”

Michael stood.

“What do you want? You want me to say it so your lawyer can use it?”

Judith said, “I would enjoy that.”

Steven looked ready to faint.

Daniel stood too.

“I want you to say it because you keep talking about Dad, the company, the employees, the debt, everything except what you did.”

Michael’s face reddened.

“I did what I had to do.”

Daniel stared at him.

There.

Not a confession precise enough for a courtroom.

Enough for two brothers.

“No,” Daniel said.

Michael laughed harshly.

“You work ninety hours a week and leave your wife alone because you have to. You lie about money because you have to. You disappear because you have to. Everybody has a reason.”

Daniel felt the blow.

Elena looked at him.

Michael continued.

“You’re me with better timing.”

Daniel’s hands tightened.

Judith shifted slightly.

Not toward him.

Just enough that he noticed.

She thought he might hit Michael.

Michael thought so too.

Daniel looked at his brother.

For years violence between them had always begun in the same place.

Not with fists.

With certainty.

The certainty that the other man deserved whatever came next.

Daniel opened his hands.

“You’re right about some of that.”

Michael blinked.

Daniel continued.

“I leave. I lie when I’m ashamed. I act like paying bills is the same as being a husband.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

Daniel swallowed.

“But I didn’t forge your name.”

Michael’s mouth tightened.

“I didn’t put your kid out of a house.”

“Stop.”

“I didn’t follow your wife.”

“I said stop.”

“I didn’t take my fear and make it everybody else’s emergency.”

Michael shoved the chair backward.

It struck the wall.

Steven stepped between them.

Daniel did not move.

Michael’s breathing became loud.

Then he looked at Elena.

Something in his face collapsed.

“I didn’t know Lily was at the clinic.”

Elena said, “You knew we had nowhere.”

Michael looked away.

“I thought you’d go to your sister.”

“My sister lives nineteen hundred miles away.”

“I know.”

“No. You knew an address existed. That’s not the same as knowing what I could do.”

Michael rubbed his face.

Elena continued.

“You called every night.”

“I wanted to know where you were.”

“You wanted to know whether I had gone back.”

Michael said nothing.

Elena’s voice remained quiet.

“You made me afraid to go home.”

That landed differently from Daniel’s anger.

Michael sat down.

For a while nobody spoke.

Then he pushed the banker’s box toward Judith.

“Take it.”

Steven whispered, “Michael.”

“Take all of it.”

Judith placed both hands on the box.

“We’ll document transfer.”

Michael nodded.

May you like

Daniel folded their father’s letter and put it in his jacket.

At the door, Michael said, “Danny.”
