Chương 14

Approvals came from operations, finance, and fleet management.
Peter had directed the policy.
Grant had no role in vessel maintenance.
Damian’s role was less direct and more difficult to dismiss.
Emails showed that he had demanded a twelve-percent reduction in unplanned vessel downtime and tied executive compensation to fleet availability. When Elena Ruiz, then head of engineering, warned that the target could encourage unsafe deferrals, Damian replied that leaders were paid to manage competing risks rather than bring him reasons targets could not be met.
He had forgotten the exchange.
Elena had not.
She called him from headquarters.
“You should remember writing it,” she said.
“I remember the meeting.”
“That is not the same.”
“No.”
“I argued for a separate safety override.”
“Peter said existing controls were sufficient.”
“And you agreed.”
“I did.”
Elena was silent.
Damian looked at the refrigerator. The repair technician had fixed the whining motor that morning. The kitchen now seemed unnaturally quiet.
“Why didn’t you push harder?” he asked.
Her reply came quickly. “Do not do that.”
“What?”
“Do not move your responsibility into my courage. I pushed. You overruled me.”
“I’m asking why you stayed.”
“That is a fair question. It is not the first question.”
He closed his eyes.
Elena continued. “I stayed because I believed I could reduce harm from inside. I stayed because the salary was better than any shipyard job I had ever had. I stayed because my mother’s care was expensive. I stayed because Peter promoted me. I stayed because leaving would have required admitting the company was becoming what I said it wasn’t.”
“Did you know reports were falsified?”
“No.”
“Did you suspect repairs were being deferred beyond safe limits?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
“I did.”
The quiet kitchen seemed to tilt.
“When?”
“Three times.”
“I don’t remember.”
“I know.”
She emailed him copies.
The first warning had been sent directly. Marcus had flagged it for review. Damian forwarded it to Peter with one sentence: Please handle.
The second came through a quarterly risk packet. Damian’s office summarized it as an operational dispute awaiting resolution.
The third was raised during a board dinner. Damian interrupted Elena after six minutes and asked her to bring recommendations rather than anxiety.
He remembered that sentence.
He had been proud of it.
After the call, Damian remained at the kitchen counter until Celeste entered in socks, moving slowly because quick turns still made her dizzy.
“What happened?”
“Elena warned me.”
Celeste sat beside him.
He showed her the messages.
She read them without comment.
“I did not know,” he said.
“No.”
“I made it difficult to tell me.”
“Yes.”
“I thought demanding solutions created accountability.”
“Sometimes it creates hiding.”
He looked at the screen. “Peter used my targets.”
“Peter made his choices.”
“So did I.”
“Yes.”
She did not rescue him from the conclusion. He loved her for that and resented her for it in the same breath.
The company announced an independent review of fleet safety practices. Trading in its stock was temporarily halted after lenders demanded information. Two major customers suspended new bookings. Crew unions called for outside inspections. Families of the Halcyon Star victims filed amended lawsuits alleging intentional concealment.
Peter remained in custody pending a detention hearing. His attorneys argued that the kidnapping contractor had acted independently to impress a senior executive. They denied that Peter had ordered violence.
Then Anton Reyes was arrested attempting to cross into Malaysia.
Under questioning, he admitted arranging Grace’s abduction. He said the instruction came through Grant Mercer.
Grant was arrested.
The news reached Damian at midnight.
For the first time, the evidence pointed away from Peter as the direct organizer and toward the man Damian had trusted to protect his home.
Grant’s attorney requested a private meeting.
Ruth advised against it.
Damian agreed to attend only if federal investigators permitted and recorded the conversation.
The meeting took place in a secure interview room at the federal courthouse. Grant wore detention clothes instead of a suit. Without the tailored jacket, he looked smaller, though not weaker.
Damian sat across from him. Ruth sat to one side. Two agents watched through glass.
Grant looked at Damian’s coat. “Same one?”
“What?”
“The coat. From that night.”
Damian did not answer.
Grant leaned back. “I did not strike Celeste.”
“Who did?”
“Peter.”
“You expect me to believe he attacked her himself?”
“He didn’t plan to. He went to take the bag. She resisted.”
“The cuff link.”
Grant nodded. “It broke during the struggle.”
“Why did you help him?”
“Because he called me at nine forty-two and said Celeste had fallen. He said she was breathing. He said she had stolen sensitive company records and that foreign competitors might be involved.”
“You believed that?”
“I believed enough.”
“Enough to delete cameras?”
“Enough to look at the footage before anyone else did.”
“What did it show?”
“Peter following her into the corridor. Grabbing the bag. Pulling her backward. She fell and hit the floor. Then he struck her with the bag when she tried to get up.”
Damian’s hands remained flat on the table.
“Did he check her breathing?”
“No.”
“Did he call for help?”
“No.”
“He left her.”
“Yes.”
A small muscle moved in Damian’s jaw.
Grant continued. “Peter came to the operations room. He gave me the drive and told me the documents were fabricated. He said Celeste intended to accuse you publicly and destroy the company.”
“And you believed him.”
“I believed the company was under attack.”
“By my daughter.”
“By whoever supplied the records.”
“So you deleted the footage.”
“I copied it first.”
Ruth leaned forward. “Where is the copy?”
Grant looked at Damian.
“What do you want?” Damian asked.
“My son protected.”
“From whom?”
“Peter’s people. The contractors. Anyone who believes I can testify.”
“You kidnapped Grace.”
“I authorized Reyes to bring her to a safe location.”
“You had her bound.”
May you like
“I did not order that.”
“You searched her family records. You let men take her from a hotel.”
