Chương 4

She had spent the last hour asking questions because she needed answers.
Now she needed to remind Chloe that she did not have to provide them.
Across the room, Daniel stood near the window.
He had been there for almost ten minutes.
Not moving.
Not leaving.
Emily could see his reflection in the glass.
A man caught between wanting forgiveness and knowing he had not earned it.
Barbara had gone upstairs after saying she needed to "collect herself."
Emily had almost laughed when she heard that.
Collect herself.
As if she was the person who had been harmed.
But she had not stopped Barbara.
Not because she agreed.
Because she did not want Chloe hearing another argument.
The child had heard enough adults raising their voices for one night.
"I should call my sister," Daniel said quietly.
Emily looked at him.
"Why?"
He turned from the window.
"Because she can watch Chloe tomorrow if you need to work."
Emily studied him.
The offer sounded practical.
Normal.
Almost helpful.
But there was something underneath it.
A way of trying to solve the problem without facing what came next.
"You think tomorrow is the problem?"
Daniel looked down.
"No."
"Then don't act like it is."
He nodded.
The silence that followed was uncomfortable, but Emily let it stay.
For years, she had been the person who filled silence.
She apologized first.
She explained first.
She tried to make everyone comfortable.
Tonight, she was tired of making comfort easier for people who had caused the discomfort.
Her phone sat on the coffee table.
Three missed calls from work.
A message from her supervisor asking if everything was okay.
She ignored it.
Her daughter was sitting next to her, and that was the only thing that mattered.
Eventually, Daniel came closer.
He stopped several feet away.
"Can I talk to her?"
Emily looked at Chloe.
The little girl did not answer.
That was an answer too.
"Not tonight," Emily said.
Daniel nodded slowly.
He accepted it without arguing.
That almost made it harder.
If he had become defensive, she could have been angry.
Anger was easier.
Regret was more complicated.
The next morning arrived without anyone sleeping well.
Emily woke up before sunrise.
For a few seconds, she forgot what happened.
Then she saw the memory card on the nightstand.
The tiny piece of plastic looked impossible to blame for changing everything.
She picked it up and placed it into her purse.
Not because she knew exactly what she would do.
Because she knew she could not leave it behind.
In the kitchen, Daniel was making coffee.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt was wrinkled.
His hair was still messy.
A person who looked more like a husband than someone Emily barely recognized.
"Chloe's still asleep," he said.
Emily nodded.
Neither of them mentioned Barbara.
Neither of them mentioned the video.
The silence between them carried every word they avoided.
"I called the security company," Daniel said.
Emily looked up.
"Why?"
"I wanted to know if the footage was backed up."
"And?"
"They said the system automatically stores recordings for thirty days unless someone deletes them."
Emily stared at him.
"Someone tried to delete it."
He looked away.
"Yes."
"Who?"
Daniel did not answer.
She already knew.
But she needed him to say it.
"Mom."
The word sounded heavy coming from him.
Not angry.
Not relieved.
Just painful.
Emily sat down at the table.
"Did you help her?"
Daniel gripped the coffee mug.
"I logged into the system."
Her face went still.
"Daniel."
"I know."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I don't think you do."
He looked at her.
"You didn't just stay quiet."
The words came slowly.
"You became part of it."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I know."
Emily wanted to believe that mattered.
But she had learned something the night before.
Knowing after the damage happened was not the same as choosing before it did.
A soft sound came from the hallway.
Both of them turned.
Chloe stood there wearing pink pajamas and holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her hair was messy from sleep.
For a moment, she looked like the same little girl who used to run into their room after nightmares.
Then Emily remembered that last night had been a nightmare.
And it had happened while everyone was awake.
"Morning, sweetheart," Emily said.
Chloe walked over.
She did not go to Daniel.
That small choice hurt him.
But he did not show it.
He only moved back slightly to give her space.
Emily made breakfast.
Nobody talked much.
The ordinary routine felt strange.
The toaster clicked.
The coffee machine hummed.
A truck passed outside collecting trash.
Normal sounds.
Normal morning.
A family pretending it still knew how to be one.
After breakfast, Emily called the security company herself.
She wanted confirmation.
Not because she doubted Daniel.
Because trust was no longer something she could borrow from memory.
The employee explained the footage process.
She asked about access logs.
She asked who could view recordings.
She wrote everything down.
Daniel watched from the counter.
"You think I don't understand why you're doing this," he said.
Emily continued writing.
"Do you?"
"You're protecting her."
Emily looked up.
"Yes."
He nodded.
"And you don't trust me."
She looked back at the notes.
"Not right now."
The honesty seemed to hurt him more than anger would have.
Before he could answer, someone knocked on the front door.
Emily froze.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Barbara stood outside the glass panel.
She was holding a small handbag.
Emily felt her shoulders tense.
Not from fear.
From exhaustion.
Daniel opened the door halfway.
"What are you doing here?"
Barbara looked past him.
"I came to talk."
"No."
The answer surprised Emily.
Daniel surprised himself too.
Barbara's expression hardened.
"Excuse me?"
"You need to leave."
Her face changed.
The same look she had used on him for years.
The one that expected obedience.
But Daniel did not move.
"I should have stopped you."
May you like
Barbara stared at him.
"You are blaming me?"
