Chương 7

He looked at her.

For one brief second, the old relationship returned.

Employer and employee, but with enough familiarity for mild disrespect to survive.

Then his face changed again.

“Will you come?”

“To meet Rachel?”

“Yes.”

Elena shook her head.

“She may not want me there.”

“I’ll ask.”

“Why do you need me?”

“I don’t.”

The answer surprised her.

“I’m asking because you knew what I didn’t. If she tells me something and I misunderstand the context, you may catch it.”

“That sounds dangerous.”

“For whom?”

“Everyone.”

He considered that.

“Yes.”

Rachel Kim chose a coffee shop in Brooklyn.

Not one of Michael’s offices.

Not one of his clubs.

Not his house.

She arrived ten minutes late wearing hospital scrubs under a raincoat.

Elena remembered her as anxious and fast-moving, always cleaning something even when it was already clean.

Now she looked tired but steadier.

She saw Michael.

Then Elena.

Her face closed.

“You.”

Elena stood.

“Hi.”

Rachel laughed softly.

“Seriously?”

Michael rose.

“Rachel, if you’d rather Elena leave—”

“I would.”

Elena picked up her bag immediately.

Rachel looked at her swollen hand.

“What happened?”

Elena stopped.

Michael said nothing.

Rachel’s eyes moved between them.

“What happened?”

“Sophia kicked me.”

Rachel stared.

“Why?”

“Because I stopped Noah’s stroller.”

“Stopped it from what?”

Elena looked toward Michael.

He nodded once.

“Going down the stairs.”

Rachel sat.

She put both hands around her coffee.

Then she started shaking.

Not dramatically.

Just in her fingers.

“I told you,” she said to Elena.

Elena sat slowly.

“I know.”

“You told me I was being emotional.”

“I know.”

“You said she was stressed.”

“I know.”

“You said—”

“I know.”

Rachel’s mouth tightened.

“No, you don’t get to do that.”

“Do what?”

“Say ‘I know’ until I stop being angry.”

Elena looked down.

“You’re right.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“Great. Everyone’s right now.”

Michael remained standing.

“Rachel.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“I need to know what happened.”

Her anger shifted toward him.

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“You were there.”

“No.”

“You lived there.”

The same words he had said to Elena.

Michael sat.

“Yes.”

Rachel’s eyes filled but she did not cry.

“You people are unbelievable.”

Elena flinched at people.

Michael did not.

Rachel continued.

“I told Sophia Noah was too young for her to grab him by the arms when she got angry. She told me I was dramatic. I told her I would tell you.”

“What happened?”

“She laughed.”

Michael’s face hardened.

“What did she say?”

Rachel looked at Elena.

“Tell him.”

Elena shook her head.

“I wasn’t there.”

“You heard later.”

“That’s not the same.”

Rachel looked back at Michael.

“She said you’d believe her.”

Michael did not react.

“She said you were barely home enough to know which nanny was working which day.”

He looked at the table.

Rachel took a breath.

“Then she told me I was fired.”

“You resigned.”

“No.”

Michael looked up.

“She fired me. She had your HR manager send severance paperwork with a confidentiality clause.”

“What HR manager?”

Rachel frowned.

“The family office.”

“Name.”

“Jared something.”

Michael’s expression changed.

“Jared Klein?”

“Yes.”

Elena had never seen Michael look confused before.

Not angry.

Confused.

“I didn’t authorize that.”

Rachel laughed.

“Of course you didn’t.”

Michael pulled out his phone.

Rachel put one hand up.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“You called me here to listen.”

Michael lowered the phone.

Rachel stared at her coffee.

“She shook him once. I saw it. Not enough to hurt him. But enough that his head moved.”

Elena felt sick.

“I told her to stop.”

Rachel’s voice became flatter.

“She told me to mind my place.”

Michael’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“Did you document it?”

“No.”

“Did you tell anyone?”

“My sister.”

“Anyone in the house?”

“Elena.”

Michael looked at Elena.

She could not meet his eyes.

Rachel did.

“She didn’t believe me.”

“That’s not true,” Elena said.

“You acted like you didn’t.”

“I believed you were upset.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“No.”

Rachel’s face softened slightly.

Not forgiveness.

Fatigue.

“I was scared too.”

Elena looked at her.

Rachel shrugged.

“I needed the reference.”

Michael spoke.

“Did you get one?”

Rachel laughed.

“No.”

“What happened?”

“I applied to three private-family jobs. Two didn’t call back after checking references. One recruiter told me, unofficially, that the Grant household had described me as unstable.”

Michael went still.

Elena looked at him.

Rachel said, “So I left private childcare. I’m a medical assistant now.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Please don’t.”

“I mean it.”

“I know. That makes it worse.”

Michael sat back.

Rachel picked at the paper sleeve around her coffee cup.

“I don’t want your money.”

“I didn’t offer any.”

“You were going to.”

“No.”

“You look like a man preparing to solve something with a wire transfer.”

Elena looked away to hide a smile.

Michael actually smiled.

Barely.

Rachel did too.

Then it vanished.

“I’ll talk to the police,” she said.

Michael nodded.

“But not because of you.”

“I understand.”

“No, I don’t think you do.”

Rachel looked at Elena.

“I’ll do it because Noah is still there.”

Elena nodded.

Rachel stood.

Before leaving, she looked at Michael again.

“You want to know the weirdest part?”

“What?”

“She could be good with him.”

Michael’s face tightened.

Rachel continued.

“Sometimes she’d sit on the floor for an hour and build blocks. She knew what songs he liked. She once drove across town herself because the store sent the wrong yogurt and he wouldn’t eat any other kind.”

Michael looked at her.

“I’m not telling you that to defend her.”

“I know.”

“I’m telling you because if you decide she’s a monster, you’ll miss what happened.”

“What happened?”

Rachel pulled on her raincoat.

“She kept choosing herself when it mattered.”

Then she left.

The next three days turned the Grant household into a place where everyone whispered.

Police interviewed Rachel.
