Chương 6

"Who else knows about this?"

"No one."

"Not Claire?"

Elise looked away.

"Especially not Claire."

Mara felt a small shift.

"Why?"

"Because Claire knows more than she admits."

The statement bothered her.

Not because it sounded impossible.

Because it sounded familiar.

Everyone in that house seemed to be carrying a different version of the truth.

When Mara returned to the Mercer house, she did not go inside immediately.

She sat in her car for several minutes.

The envelope rested on the passenger seat.

She could open it.

She could call Daniel.

She could throw it away.

Every choice felt like stepping onto a different road without knowing where it ended.

Her phone buzzed.

Claire.

Mara answered.

"Where are you?"

The question was strange.

Not hello.

Not are you coming back.

Where are you.

"Running an errand."

"With who?"

Mara looked at the house.

"Why?"

Claire was silent.

Then she said, "Because Daniel knows about Elise."

Mara's grip tightened around the phone.

"How?"

"I do not know."

"That is not true."

Another silence.

Longer this time.

"Claire."

"I saw his computer."

Mara looked through the windshield.

The house seemed unchanged.

The same windows.

The same driveway.

The same expensive landscaping.

But she had learned something about beautiful things.

They could hide damage.

"What did you see?"

"An email."

"From who?"

"His lawyer."

Mara waited.

Claire breathed out.

"About you."

The word felt heavier than it should have.

"About me?"

"Daniel wants to know if you signed anything when you started working here."

Mara felt cold.

"Why?"

"Because he thinks you are going to talk."

Mara looked at the envelope.

"Did you tell him I met Elise?"

"No."

"Then how does he know?"

"I said I do not know."

The frustration in Claire's voice was new.

Not anger.

Fear.

"I am tired of not knowing," Claire whispered.

Mara closed her eyes.

For the first time, Claire sounded like someone trapped.

Not someone protecting the person who trapped her.

"I need to ask you something," Mara said.

"Okay."

"Did Noah almost drown?"

The line went quiet.

Mara could hear Claire breathing.

Then a small sound.

Like someone sitting down.

"Yes."

The answer came so softly that Mara almost missed it.

"Claire."

"I was not there when it happened."

"Where were you?"

"At the hospital."

"Why?"

"For my mother."

Mara said nothing.

"She had surgery that morning."

"I did not know."

"Most people do not."

Claire's voice changed.

"That is the problem with our family."

"We are very good at making sure people do not know things."

Mara looked at the house again.

"Then tell me what happened."

"I cannot."

"Cannot or will not?"

"I do not know."

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

Before Mara could answer, Claire spoke again.

"But I know one thing."

"What?"

"Noah was not afraid of the water."

Mara waited.

"He was afraid before he got near it."

The sentence followed her long after the call ended.

When Mara finally entered the house, Daniel was standing in the entryway.

He was not angry.

That would have been easier.

He looked tired.

Almost human.

"You met Elise."

It was not a question.

Mara placed her keys on the table.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because she contacted me."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Of course she did."

The bitterness in his voice surprised her.

"You know her."

"I know what she does."

"What does she do?"

"She takes pieces of the truth and builds a story around them."

Mara studied him.

"Is that what you think I am doing?"

"No."

His answer came quickly.

"Not yet."

That word bothered her.

Not yet.

Like he was waiting for her to become something.

"Daniel, what happened to Noah?"

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"I told you."

"You told me a version."

"I told you what happened."

"Then why are you afraid of me asking?"

He looked away.

For a moment, he seemed less like the man everyone described and more like someone exhausted from carrying something heavy.

Then it disappeared.

"You should be careful."

Mara felt anger rise.

Not fear.

Anger.

"Is that a threat?"

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"It is advice."

"From someone who monitors his employees?"

His expression hardened.

"So Elise told you that."

"She told me you watched her."

"She was paranoid."

"Was she?"

Daniel did not answer.

That was the first time Mara saw something she could not explain.

Not guilt.

Not exactly.

Something closer to recognition.

Like he had just realized the conversation was no longer under his control.

Upstairs, Noah laughed.

A small, ordinary sound.

The kind of sound that made every adult mistake feel worse.

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

Then back at Mara.

"Please do not make him part of this."

Mara looked at him.

"Then stop making choices that put him in the middle."

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

Then Daniel walked away.

Mara waited until she heard his office door close.

Only then did she take the envelope from her bag.

She sat at the kitchen table.

The same table where Noah ate cereal.

The same table where Claire had admitted she was afraid.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A printed email.

And a handwritten note.

The handwriting was Elise's.

The note contained only six words.

I should have looked closer.

The Truth Hidden Beneath The Silence Of A Perfect Family

Mara read the note three more times before she allowed herself to look at the photograph.

The paper was old enough that the corners had softened.

Not ancient.

Not forgotten.

Just carried.

The kind of thing someone kept because throwing it away felt impossible.

The photograph showed the Mercer backyard.

The angle was different from the one Daniel had sent her.

This one was taken closer to the pool.

Noah was standing near the edge.

He looked younger than he did now.

Not by much.

But enough.

His shoulders were smaller.

His face had not yet learned how to hide things.

May you like

Daniel stood several feet away.

The image was blurry.
