Chương 7

He read the first paragraph twice.

Elena watched his thumb stop moving.

"What does it say?"

Mark looked toward Clara.

The toddler had fallen quiet except for the occasional tremor of a breath.

"It says someone submitted a sample under my name in April."

Elena stared at him.

"Someone?"

"The lab says they couldn't verify chain of custody."

The paramedic glanced over despite himself.

Mark kept reading.

"They contacted me because the collection paperwork had inconsistencies."

"Did you answer?"

"I never saw this."

Elena looked at the timestamp.

"How is that possible?"

Mark opened the message details.

The email had been automatically forwarded from an old private account to his work address that morning.

He frowned.

"Victoria knew the password to the old account."

Elena said nothing.

Mark scrolled to the next email.

His breathing slowed again, but Elena could see the pulse beating at the side of his neck.

"This one says the first test was inconclusive."

"Inconclusive how?"

"The sample was contaminated."

Elena looked toward Clara.

"With what?"

"It doesn't say."

Mark opened the third message.

This one was newer.

Only six days old.

The laboratory had received another kit bearing his name and had flagged it because the first case remained unresolved.

The letter warned that identity verification would be required before any further testing could be treated as legally reliable.

Mark's expression changed from shock to something colder.

"So this morning's result isn't valid."

Elena sat straighter.

"What?"

"It says right here."

He turned the phone enough for her to see.

"The lab won't certify any result unless I provide a sample directly."

"But Victoria said excluded."

"She showed me a piece of paper that said excluded."

"Could it be fake?"

"I don't know."

The paramedic finally spoke.

"Don't make medical or legal decisions from email while you're in the back of an ambulance."

Mark looked at him.

The man shrugged.

"Sorry, but somebody had to say it."

For the first time since the doors of the house opened, Mark almost smiled.

It vanished quickly.

Elena leaned her head back against the metal wall.

A strange exhaustion moved through her now that the immediate danger had passed.

Her whole body had begun registering what fear had postponed.

Her wrist ached.

Her knees pulsed.

Her shoulder burned where Clara's weight had struck her.

She closed her eyes for two seconds.

When she opened them, Mark was still staring at the phone.

"Why would she want you to think Clara wasn't yours?"

He shook his head.

"Maybe she doesn't."

"She just told you."

"Victoria says whatever she thinks will control the next thirty seconds."

Elena looked at him.

"That's not exactly a defense."

"No."

His voice was flat.

"It's an observation."

The ambulance slowed.

The siren cut off.

Outside, sunlight flashed across glass buildings.

A moment later they turned under the hospital entrance canopy.

The rear doors opened almost immediately.

Clara began crying again when strangers reached for the stretcher.

Mark followed her out.

Elena climbed down more slowly and nearly collapsed when her feet hit the pavement.

One of the paramedics caught her arm.

"I told you."

"I'm standing."

"Barely."

Inside the emergency department, Clara was taken behind double doors.

Mark stayed close until a nurse stopped him to confirm insurance information and his relationship to the child.

The question struck him visibly.

"Father."

The word came after a pause.

The nurse did not appear to notice.

Elena did.

Another nurse directed Elena toward triage.

"I need to stay with them."

"You need your knees cleaned."

"They're fine."

"They are bleeding through your stockings."

Elena looked down.

She had forgotten again.

Mark heard the exchange.

"Go."

She hesitated.

His voice softened slightly.

"You caught her."

Elena looked at Clara disappearing down the corridor.

"That doesn't mean she's okay."

"No."

Mark swallowed.

"But go."

Elena let the nurse lead her away.

The triage area smelled faintly of disinfectant and burnt coffee.

A television mounted in one corner played a daytime game show with the sound turned low.

An elderly man argued with a receptionist about parking validation.

A child wearing one red sneaker and one blue sneaker slept across three plastic chairs.

The ordinary life of the room felt almost offensive.

Elena sat while a nurse cut away the torn fabric around her knees.

"These are going to sting."

"They already sting."

"Then at least I'm not surprising you."

The nurse cleaned the abrasions.

Elena gripped the side of the chair.

"Any chance you're pregnant?"

"No."

"Allergies?"

"No."

"Did you hit your head?"

"No."

"Wrist pain?"

"Yes."

The nurse examined it gently.

"Probably a sprain, but we'll get someone to look."

Elena nodded.

Her phone vibrated inside the pocket of her apron.

She pulled it out.

Nine missed calls.

Three were from the house landline.

Two were from an unknown number.

Four were from her sister Marisol.

Elena stared at the screen.

She had forgotten that she was supposed to pick up Marisol's son from summer day camp at three.

It was 12:18.

The fact that something so normal still needed to happen made her want to cry.

She called.

Marisol answered immediately.

"Where are you?"

"Hospital."

Silence.

Then, "What happened?"

"I'm okay."

"That was not my question."

Elena closed her eyes.

"There was an accident at work."

"What kind?"

"I can't explain right now."

"Are you hurt?"

"My knees."

"Your knees?"

"And my wrist."

"Elena."

"I'm okay."

"You said that twice, which means you're not."

Despite everything, Elena let out a small breath that was almost a laugh.

"Can you get Mateo today?"

"I was going to ask you to get Mateo because my shift changed."

Elena rubbed her forehead.

"Right."

Marisol went quiet.

"What happened?"

Elena looked toward the double doors leading deeper into the emergency department.

"I caught Clara."

"Caught her doing what?"

"No."

Elena lowered her voice.

"I caught her when she fell."

There was a long silence.

"From where?"

"The upstairs landing."

Marisol swore softly in Spanish.

May you like

Elena shut her eyes.

"She's alive."
