Chương 12

Outside, dusk had begun turning the windows into mirrors.

Clara could see herself faintly in the glass, swallowed by the gray sweatshirt, hair still untidy from the fall.

She looked tired.

More than tired.

She looked like someone who had been living close to the edge for too long and had finally noticed how little ground remained behind her.

Adrian spoke without looking at her.

“How much is the hospital debt?”

Her entire body stiffened.

He raised a hand.

“I’m not offering to pay it.”

“That was a smart correction.”

“I’m asking because Morrow may have had access to information about your finances.”

“Then ask Nolan.”

“I’m asking you.”

“Why?”

“Because I’d rather not discuss your life with a file.”

Clara stared at him.

That answer disarmed her more than it should have.

“About forty-two thousand.”

He said nothing.

She laughed once.

“There.”

“What?”

“The rich-person silence.”

“I was doing math.”

“That is worse.”

“What kind?”

“Trying to decide how insignificant forty-two thousand dollars is to you.”

Adrian looked at her then.

“It isn’t insignificant because it is significant to you.”

Clara’s mouth closed.

He seemed irritated by his own sincerity.

“That sounded rehearsed.”

“It wasn’t.”

“Good.”

“I would hate to think you practice being decent.”

“So would I.”

Another small silence passed.

Brutus shifted in his sleep.

Clara rubbed her thumb along a loose thread on the borrowed sweatshirt.

“The debt is why I called the agency.”

Adrian waited.

“My landlord raised the rent in July.”

She looked at the carpet.

“I tried to pick up extra cleaning shifts, but the regular company cut hours.”

“Why?”

“Lost a hotel contract.”

“And the agency?”

“They pay faster.”

“Same day?”

“Usually forty-eight hours.”

He nodded.

Clara looked at him.

“There.”

“What?”

“Now you’re calculating something again.”

“I’m trying to understand the chain.”

“What chain?”

“Who would know you were desperate enough to accept a last-minute assignment without asking many questions.”

The sentence landed harder than he intended.

Clara’s face changed.

Adrian caught it.

“I didn’t mean desperate as an insult.”

“It wasn’t inaccurate.”

“That doesn’t mean I should have said it that way.”

She looked away.

The truth was worse than the word.

She had accepted an address from a woman she had never met, before dawn, after being told not to ask questions.

She had been proud of herself for getting the work.

Now the memory felt different.

“How would anyone know?”

She asked.

“Debt collectors.”

“Some.”

“Agency staff.”

“Yes.”

“Landlord.”

“Maybe.”

“Anyone at the hospital?”

“I don’t know.”

“Your ex?”

She shot him a look.

“Still dental equipment.”

“That was not an answer.”

“Daniel knew my mother was sick.”

“Did he know what it cost?”

“He knew enough.”

Adrian nodded slowly.

Clara’s face tightened.

“No.”

“What?”

“He’s not involved.”

“You said that very fast.”

“Because he’s not.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Daniel is cowardly, selfish, vain, and allergic to conflict.”

“That does not exclude him from giving someone information.”

Clara’s jaw tightened.

“He would not do this.”

Adrian watched her.

There was no accusation in his face now.

Only attention.

That made her more defensive.

“He left because he didn’t want to deal with my mother getting worse.”

Adrian said nothing.

“He said every conversation had become about hospitals.”

Her voice flattened.

“He said he felt like he was dating a crisis.”

Brutus lifted his head at the change in her tone.

Clara rubbed his ear.

Adrian’s voice came quieter.

“That was cruel.”

“It was also partly true.”

“No.”

Clara looked up.

Adrian held her gaze.

“Your life being difficult did not make you difficult to love.”

She stared at him.

The room seemed suddenly too small.

Adrian looked away first.

“Forget I said that.”

“I don’t think I can.”

“I was afraid of that.”

Nolan returned before either of them could make the moment worse.

“Morrow’s awake.”

Adrian stood.

“Talking?”

“Barely.”

“What happened?”

“He was sedated.”

“With what?”

“They don’t know yet.”

“Condition?”

“Stable.”

Clara watched Nolan’s face.

“There’s something else.”

He looked at her.

“He asked for you.”

Her stomach dropped.

“Me?”

“By name.”

Adrian’s expression sharpened.

“How does he know her?”

“That’s what I asked.”

Nolan glanced toward the door.

“He told Davis one sentence before the paramedics stopped the conversation.”

“What sentence?”

Nolan looked at Clara again.

“He said, ‘Tell Clara the dog remembers the basement.’”

Brutus rose.

Not because he understood the words.

Because Adrian moved too suddenly.

The dog recoiled.

Adrian stopped himself.

Clara’s skin prickled.

“What basement?”

Nobody answered.

She looked at Adrian.

“You know.”

His face had gone still in a different way than before.

Not anger.

Recognition.

“Adrian.”

He glanced at Brutus.

The mastiff was watching him.

Clara stepped closer to the dog.

“What basement?”

Adrian finally spoke.

“The garage where Brutus was found had a lower storage level.”

Clara felt cold.

“You said he was chained to a radiator.”

“Upstairs.”

“Then why would Morrow mention a basement?”

Adrian’s silence stretched.

Nolan answered instead.

“Because there was evidence downstairs that never made it into the first report.”

Clara looked at him.

“What kind of evidence?”

Nolan hesitated.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Photographs.”

Clara swallowed.

“Of the dogs?”

“Yes.”

“Why wasn’t it in the report?”

“Because the police seized what they found.”

“That doesn’t answer me.”

Adrian looked at Nolan.

Nolan looked away.

Clara understood.

“You had copies.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To identify the people involved.”

“Did it work?”

“Some.”

“Was Morrow in them?”

“No.”

“Then what does he know?”

“We don’t know.”

“Stop saying that like it’s acceptable.”

“It isn’t.”

Adrian’s voice sharpened.

“That’s why this matters.”

Brutus began pacing.

Clara noticed before either man did.

She lowered herself beside him.

“Hey.”

He kept moving.

His breathing changed.

Not full panic.

Anticipation.

Clara looked around.

No metal object.

No raised voice now.

Nothing obvious.

Then she saw Adrian’s hand.

He had reached unconsciously toward his pocket.

A ring of keys was partly visible there.

The smallest metal tag tapped against another key.

May you like

Brutus flinched at the sound.

“Take them out.”
