Chương 8

"Who?" Mara asked again.

Adrian did not answer immediately.

He walked away from the table and turned slightly toward the window.

A habit.

Mara noticed it.

When he needed to hide a reaction, he moved away from people.

Her mother used to do the same thing.

That realization bothered her.

She did not want to keep finding pieces of other people inside him.

"Adrian."

He looked back at her.

"His name is Daniel Moretti."

The name meant nothing to Mara.

But Rosa reacted.

The older woman's face lost color.

"Daniel?"

Adrian noticed.

"You know him."

Rosa slowly sat down.

"No."

Nobody believed her.

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Rosa."

The older woman closed her eyes briefly.

"Elena told me he was gone."

"Who is he?"

Rosa looked at Mara.

Then at Noah.

Then back at Adrian.

"Her brother."

The room went silent.

Adrian stared.

"Elena had a brother?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't I know?"

Rosa looked down.

"Because Elena didn't want you to."

The answer cut deeper than Adrian expected.

He had accepted secrets from Elena because he believed everyone had private pain.

But a brother?

A living person?

Someone connected to her family?

That was not a small secret.

That was a missing chapter.

"Why would she hide him?"

Rosa shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Try."

The word was quiet.

But everyone felt the weight behind it.

Rosa looked exhausted.

"Daniel was involved in things Elena hated."

"What things?"

"Things that followed your world."

Adrian became still.

The accusation was subtle.

But it was there.

Mara saw it.

Rosa was not blaming him.

She was warning him.

"Are you saying Elena's family was connected to people like me?" Adrian asked.

Rosa hesitated.

"I am saying Elena spent years trying to make sure Noah would never inherit that life."

Adrian looked toward his son.

The baby slept without knowing that adults were arranging the meaning of his future.

"Where is Daniel now?" he asked.

Marcus's voice came through the phone again.

"Adrian?"

He had forgotten the call was still active.

"Tell me."

"We found records."

"What records?"

"Medical records."

Adrian waited.

"Daniel Moretti died two years ago."

Mara looked at him.

Rosa covered her mouth.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Then who sent the message?"

Marcus paused.

"That's the problem."

A silence followed.

"Someone used Daniel's identity."

Adrian looked at the envelope in Mara's hand.

The one with her name.

The one Elena had left behind.

"Find out who had access."

"We are trying."

"No."

Adrian's voice became colder.

"Find out who wanted me to believe it was him."

He ended the call.

Mara still held the envelope.

She had forgotten about it.

Now it felt heavier.

"Should I open this?"

Adrian looked at her.

"I don't know."

The honesty surprised her.

She expected certainty from him.

Orders.

Control.

Instead, he admitted uncertainty.

That made him seem more human.

And somehow more dangerous.

Because uncertainty made people desperate.

"You spent years looking for answers," Mara said.

"Yes."

"And now you're scared to open a letter?"

Adrian looked at the envelope.

"Yes."

The simple answer caught her off guard.

"Why?"

"Because there are things you can survive not knowing."

Mara looked at him.

"And things you can't."

He did not argue.

She opened the envelope.

The paper inside was folded carefully.

The handwriting was uneven.

Not because Elena had written quickly.

Because she had written while emotional.

Mara recognized that immediately.

She unfolded the letter.

Her eyes moved across the first line.

Dear Mara,

She stopped breathing.

The room disappeared for a moment.

Nobody spoke.

She continued reading silently.

Your mother spent her whole life trying to protect you from a truth she thought would hurt you more than silence.

Mara swallowed.

Her hand tightened around the paper.

Adrian watched her face change.

Not dramatically.

Not like movies.

Real pain was quieter.

It arrived slowly.

Like a door opening in a room someone had forgotten existed.

Mara continued.

I know you may never forgive the adults who kept things from you.

You may believe we took your choices away.

Maybe we did.

But we were afraid.

Her eyes stopped.

A tear formed but did not fall.

She blinked it away.

Adrian looked down.

He understood that instinct.

Hiding pain until it became invisible.

Mara kept reading.

Your mother Claire was not the person people believed she was.

She was brave.

She was stubborn.

And she made mistakes because she believed she could fix things alone.

Mara's fingers trembled.

"My mother..."

Her voice cracked slightly.

Adrian did not interrupt.

The letter continued.

She met me when we were both trying to escape the same people.

I thought I was protecting her.

She thought she was protecting me.

We were both wrong.

Mara looked up.

"What people?"

Nobody answered.

She looked back down.

If you are reading this, then something happened that prevented me from telling you myself.

I am sorry.

That sentence hurt more than the others.

Because it sounded like Elena had known she might not be there.

Mara reached the final paragraph.

There is one thing you deserve to know.

The person you have spent your life believing abandoned you did not leave because she stopped loving you.

She left because she was trying to keep you alive.

Mara lowered the letter.

The words sat between them.

Adrian felt something shift.

Not because he knew the truth.

Because he understood what it meant to love someone badly enough to make choices for them.

He had done the same thing.

He had protected Noah from his own world.

He had decided what his son could handle.

The difference was that now he was seeing the damage caused by that kind of protection.

Mara folded the letter carefully.

"That's not enough."

Adrian looked at her.

She wiped her face quickly.

"I know everyone expects me to be grateful."

"No."

He shook his head.

"You don't have to be."

She looked surprised.

"Why not?"

"Because they made choices for you."

May you like

The answer came quietly.

"And you have a right to be angry."
