Chương 2

"I wanted you to remember the family you had."

Lily looked at him.

"But I can have two mommies in my heart."

The sentence made several guests look away.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

Richard looked completely defeated.

Because his daughter had found the wisdom he had been missing.

Emily gently touched Lily's hair.

"You should have known the truth."

Richard nodded.

"I know."

"No more secrets."

Richard looked at his wife.

"I promise."

But Emily did not answer immediately.

Promises were easy.

Trust was harder.

She placed the photograph carefully on the table.

The crystal glasses beside it shook slightly from the movement.

Everyone watched as the old memory sat among the expensive dinner plates and decorations.

A reminder that behind the luxury, behind the success, behind the perfect image, there was still a family carrying hidden wounds.

Richard lowered his eyes.

"I loved Sarah."

Emily closed her eyes briefly.

The words hurt.

But she waited.

"And I love you."

Richard's voice broke.

"I never wanted to replace her."

"I never wanted to erase her."

"I just didn't know how to bring her memory into our lives without losing what we built together."

Emily looked at him.

For the first time that evening, she saw not only the man who hid the truth.

She saw the man who had been carrying guilt for years.

But forgiveness was not something that could happen in a single moment.

Especially not after a secret this large.

Lily gently pulled both of their hands together.

Her small fingers wrapped around theirs.

"Can we just be a family?"

The question was simple.

Pure.

And painful.

Richard looked at Emily.

Emily looked at Richard.

Outside the large dining room window, the dark evening covered the mansion grounds.

Inside, a family that had been pretending to be perfect finally faced the truth.

And for the first time in years, they had a chance to become something stronger than perfect.

They had a chance to become honest.

The next morning, the Carter mansion felt different.

The silence inside the enormous house was not the peaceful silence of luxury.

It was the silence of people trying to understand what had changed overnight.

The same marble floors reflected the morning sunlight.

The same expensive paintings decorated the walls.

The same elegant furniture filled the rooms.

But something invisible had shifted.

The family that had spent years protecting an image had finally allowed the truth to enter their home.

Lily sat at the kitchen island with a glass of orange juice in front of her.

Her white pajamas were slightly wrinkled, and her light brown hair fell naturally around her face.

She looked smaller than usual.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was carrying questions that belonged to someone much older.

Emily watched her daughter from across the kitchen.

She had barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the photograph on the dining table.

She saw the woman named Sarah.

She saw the sadness in Richard's eyes.

She saw the confusion on Lily's face.

And she wondered how many years of their marriage had been built around a truth she never knew.

Richard entered the kitchen quietly.

For once, the powerful businessman who usually moved through the world with confidence looked uncertain.

He stopped near the doorway.

Emily noticed him but did not speak.

Lily looked up.

"Daddy."

Richard forced a small smile.

"Good morning, sweetheart."

The little girl studied his face.

"Are you still sad?"

The question caught him off guard.

He walked closer and sat beside her.

"I'm sorry you had to find out something so important by yourself."

Lily looked down at her juice.

"I thought maybe I did something wrong."

Richard's expression immediately changed.

"No."

His answer came quickly.

"You never did anything wrong."

"Never."

Lily nodded slowly.

"Then why did everyone look scared?"

Richard struggled to find the right words.

Because children deserved honesty.

But they also deserved protection.

"Sometimes grown-ups keep secrets because they think they are protecting people they love."

Lily looked at him.

"Did the secret hurt Mommy?"

Richard glanced toward Emily.

Emily remained quiet, letting him answer.

"Yes," he admitted.

"But hiding it hurt her more."

The honesty surprised Emily.

She had expected excuses.

She had expected explanations designed to make him look better.

Instead, she saw a man finally accepting the damage his choices had caused.

After breakfast, Emily asked Richard to meet her in his office.

The same office where Lily had discovered the photograph.

The room was large and impressive.

Dark wooden shelves covered the walls.

Awards and business achievements filled glass displays.

Everything represented success.

But now Emily only saw the locked drawers.

The hidden memories.

The things Richard had chosen not to share.

She stood near the window while Richard entered behind her.

"How long were you planning to keep this from me?"

Richard stopped.

"I don't know."

Emily turned around.

"You don't know?"

He looked down.

"I kept telling myself I would tell you when the time was right."

"And when was that time?"

Richard had no answer.

Emily nodded sadly.

"Exactly."

The room became quiet.

"I loved you, Richard."

His eyes lifted.

"I still do."

"But I need you to understand something."

She placed her hand over her heart.

"I am not hurt because Sarah existed."

Richard listened carefully.

"I am hurt because you decided I couldn't handle the truth."

His expression changed.

"You made that decision for me."

Richard slowly nodded.

"You are right."

Emily looked away.

The admission hurt because she knew he meant it.

"I was afraid."

"Of what?"

Richard walked toward the desk.

"That if you knew everything about my past, you would look at me differently."

Emily's eyes softened slightly.

"Richard, everyone has a past."

"But not everyone hides a child from that past."

He closed his eyes.

The words were painful because they were true.

"I met Sarah when I was younger."

"I was not the person you know today."

May you like

"I was selfish."

"I thought money could solve every problem."
