Chương 2

"I need you to know that what happened was not what you were told."

The room became completely silent.

Victoria looked away.

Daniel's expression changed from confusion to pain.

The recording continued.

"I wanted to tell you sooner, but I was afraid of what would happen if the truth came out."

Daniel looked at Victoria.

"You knew about this?"

Victoria did not respond.

That was enough.

The man who had spent his entire life protecting his family suddenly felt like the person who needed protection was himself.

He looked down at Lily.

The little girl was still holding onto his arm.

She was scared.

But she had been brave enough to bring the truth into the light.

Daniel gently touched her hair.

"No matter what happens," he said quietly, "you will always be safe with me."

Lily nodded.

The smartwatch continued playing.

And inside that small device was a story that had been buried for more than a decade.

A story about love.

A story about betrayal.

And a truth that was finally ready to destroy the silence that protected it.

The recording continued playing, filling the elegant dining room with a voice that carried years of pain and hesitation.

Daniel stood completely still, afraid that even a single movement might make the truth disappear again.

Lily watched his face carefully because she had never seen her father look so lost.

The man who always seemed to know what to do suddenly looked like someone searching for answers in the darkness.

Victoria remained near the doorway, her hands tightly clasped together as the recording revealed pieces of a past she had spent years hiding.

The voice from the smartwatch belonged to someone Daniel recognized instantly.

It was his former business partner, Michael Reynolds.

Michael had disappeared from Daniel's life twelve years earlier after a mysterious accident that changed everything.

Daniel had been told Michael left the company because of personal problems.

He had been told there was nothing more to investigate.

He had believed those explanations because he trusted the people who gave them.

But now he realized the truth had been carefully placed out of his reach.

The recording continued.

"Daniel, I know you believe the night of the accident was simple, but it wasn't."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

His eyes moved toward Victoria.

"What did you know?" he asked quietly.

Victoria looked down.

"I knew there was more to that night."

Her voice trembled.

"But I didn't know how to tell you."

Daniel shook his head slowly.

"After twelve years, you still didn't know how to tell me?"

Victoria looked at Lily.

"I was trying to protect her."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Protect Lily from what?"

Victoria did not answer immediately.

The silence felt heavier than any confession.

Lily moved closer to her father.

She did not understand every word, but she understood that adults were talking about something connected to her.

Daniel noticed her fear.

He lowered himself to her height.

"Lily, I need you to know something."

She looked at him.

"Sometimes grown-ups make choices because they think they are helping."

He paused.

"But hiding the truth can hurt people too."

Lily nodded slowly.

The recording continued.

"Daniel, the child you were told was not connected to Michael's case is the reason I am leaving this message."

Daniel froze.

His eyes widened.

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

"Turn it off."

For the first time that night, Daniel heard desperation in her voice.

He stood up.

"No."

The word was calm, but final.

Victoria stopped.

Daniel pressed play again.

The recording continued.

"I discovered documents that proved someone changed the hospital records that night."

Daniel felt his heart sink.

Hospital records.

A memory came back.

The night Lily was born.

The night he waited outside the hospital room with excitement and fear.

The night doctors told him everything was fine.

The night Victoria cried and said she needed time.

He had accepted every explanation because he loved her.

But now every unanswered question returned.

The recording continued.

"The records were changed because someone wanted to hide the identity of a child."

Lily looked between the adults.

"A child?"

Her small voice broke the silence.

Daniel immediately looked at her.

"Don't worry, sweetheart."

But he could not hide the uncertainty in his eyes.

Victoria covered her mouth.

She looked like someone watching a wall collapse after years of holding it up.

Daniel turned toward her.

"Tell me the truth."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"I was scared."

"Scared of what?"

"Of losing everything."

Daniel stared at her.

"You should have trusted me."

Victoria slowly shook her head.

"You don't understand."

"Then make me understand."

The room became silent again.

Finally, Victoria spoke.

"The night Lily was born, there was a mistake."

Daniel waited.

"A mistake?"

Victoria nodded.

"At the hospital."

Her voice became quieter.

"The records were mixed up."

Daniel looked confused.

"What are you saying?"

Victoria looked at Lily.

The little girl was standing beside the man she believed would always protect her.

"I am saying that Lily's birth story is not what you think it is."

Daniel felt as if the floor moved beneath him.

The smartwatch suddenly displayed another notification.

A second recording.

The screen showed a date from twelve years earlier.

Daniel reached toward it.

Before he could press anything, Victoria grabbed his hand.

"Please."

He looked at her.

"Why are you afraid of me hearing the truth?"

She released his hand slowly.

Because she knew there was nothing left to hide.

Daniel played the second recording.

A different voice appeared.

This time it was a woman.

A doctor.

The voice was calm but serious.

"Mr. Carter, if you are listening to this, then the truth has finally reached you."

Daniel closed his eyes.

The doctor continued.

"There was an error during the emergency procedure twelve years ago."

Daniel held his breath.

"Two families were affected."

Lily looked confused.

The doctor continued.

May you like

"The hospital discovered the mistake shortly after, but certain people chose to hide it."

Daniel looked at Victoria.
