Chương 5

Thomas took a deep breath.

The question was simple, but the answer carried years of pain.

“I left because I found something I was not supposed to find.”

He looked around the ballroom.

“Something that showed me our family was built on a lie.”

Several guests exchanged nervous looks.

Thomas continued.

“I discovered that money had been moved from the company accounts for years.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire looked shocked.

Margaret looked confused.

“I thought you said this was about a family secret,” she said.

Thomas nodded.

“It is.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Because Daniel knew.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Daniel did not deny it.

“I knew something was wrong.”

Thomas shook his head.

“You knew enough.”

Daniel looked at his brother.

“I was afraid.”

Thomas’s expression became emotional.

“That was always your answer.”

The words hurt because they were true.

Daniel had spent years making decisions based on fear.

Fear of losing respect.

Fear of losing his position.

Fear of seeing his family fall apart.

But every attempt to prevent pain had created more pain.

Ethan looked at the adults around him.

The celebration had become a courtroom without judges.

Everyone was finally forced to face choices they had made long ago.

Thomas reached into his coat and pulled out another envelope.

This one was newer.

“I brought this because I knew the truth could not stay hidden forever.”

Daniel looked at it.

“What is that?”

Thomas handed it to Ethan.

The boy hesitated.

“Why me?”

Thomas smiled sadly.

“Because you were the only one brave enough to ask the question everyone else avoided.”

Ethan accepted the envelope.

Claire watched him carefully.

She could see how much responsibility he had taken on.

But she also saw something else.

She saw that he was not alone anymore.

The truth was no longer something he carried by himself.

Ethan opened the envelope.

Inside was a document and a photograph.

He looked at the picture first.

It showed Thomas, Daniel, and their parents many years earlier.

They looked happy.

They looked like a family without secrets.

Then Ethan read the document.

His expression slowly changed.

“What is it?” Claire asked.

Ethan looked up.

“It says someone else knew.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who?”

Ethan looked at the name on the page.

The entire room waited.

Then he said it.

“Grandmother.”

Margaret froze.

The color drained from her face.

For a moment, nobody understood.

Then Thomas spoke quietly.

“She knew the truth before any of us.”

Margaret looked down.

The pain on her face revealed something everyone immediately noticed.

She was not surprised.

She was remembering.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Daniel asked.

His voice was filled with disbelief.

Margaret sat down slowly.

Because suddenly she was no longer the person waiting for answers.

She was someone who had been hiding them.

“I thought I was protecting my family.”

The words echoed through the ballroom.

Ethan looked at her.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Margaret looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“You all say you hid things because you wanted to protect people.”

He paused.

“But everyone got hurt anyway.”

Nobody could argue with him.

The honesty of a child revealed what the adults had spent years avoiding.

Margaret wiped away a tear.

“You are right.”

She looked around the room.

“I was wrong.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“What did you know?”

Margaret took a deep breath.

“The person who caused the problem was not Thomas.”

Thomas looked at her.

“Mother.”

She nodded.

“I should have told the truth years ago.”

The ballroom became silent again.

The final piece of the mystery was finally approaching.

The family had uncovered the hidden letter.

They had found the brother they thought they lost.

They had discovered years of silence and fear.

But now they were about to learn the one truth that had started everything.

Margaret looked at Ethan.

“I owe you the truth.”

The boy waited.

She looked at Daniel and Thomas.

Then she finally said the words that changed the entire family forever.

“The person who betrayed this family was someone we all trusted.”

Who should reveal the next secret first: Margaret or Thomas?

“The person who betrayed this family was someone we all trusted.”

Margaret’s voice trembled as the words left her mouth.

Nobody moved.

The guests who remained in the ballroom looked from one family member to another, trying to understand how the woman they had always respected could be connected to the secret that had destroyed so many years of their lives.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

Not because he believed she was innocent.

Because he did not want to believe the truth could be worse than he imagined.

Margaret looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“I wish I could tell you that I was not involved.”

Thomas looked away.

He had spent years waiting for this moment.

But now that it arrived, it hurt more than he expected.

Ethan watched the three generations of his family standing together.

A child should not have to uncover the hidden wounds of adults.

But he also understood something important.

A family could not heal from a wound nobody was willing to admit existed.

“Tell us,” Daniel said.

His voice was quiet.

“Please.”

Margaret looked toward the empty chairs around the ballroom.

The celebration decorations still surrounded them.

The flowers.

The lights.

The elegant table filled with untouched food.

Everything looked perfect.

But behind that perfect appearance was a history built on fear and silence.

“Many years ago, before you and Thomas became adults, our family faced financial problems,” Margaret began.

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I remember.”

Margaret continued.

“Your father had built everything we had, but when things became difficult, he made choices that put everything at risk.”

Daniel listened carefully.

“I thought I could save the family name.”

Her voice became weaker.

“I thought protecting our reputation mattered more than admitting we needed help.”

Ethan looked at her.

May you like

“And what happened?”

Margaret looked at him.
