Chương 8
Emily closed her eyes briefly.
"Everyone always needs to explain something first."
Her voice was not angry.
It was tired.
Claire heard it.
"I know."
"No, you don't."
The room became quiet.
Emily looked at the phone.
"You don't know what today has been like."
"I know I wasn't there."
"That's not what I mean."
Claire did not respond.
Emily looked at Ryan.
Then at Linda.
Then at Laura.
All the people who had made decisions around her instead of with her.
"I found out my husband called his mother about a medical concern before telling me."
Ryan looked down.
"I found out my aunt changed my cake because she was scared."
Laura swallowed.
"I found out my mother-in-law knew something about my pregnancy that I didn't."
Linda lowered her eyes.
"And now I am talking to my husband's ex-wife because apparently she knows something too."
Nobody had a defense.
Not a good one.
Claire finally spoke.
"I understand why you are angry."
Emily laughed softly.
"No, you understand why I am angry because you are also outside the circle."
The sentence affected Claire.
I could hear it in the silence that followed.
"Maybe you're right," Claire said.
"Maybe I am."
Ryan looked at Emily.
She did not look away.
That was the thing about my daughter.
She had always been gentle.
But people sometimes confuse gentleness with weakness.
They never noticed the strength underneath until she stopped being quiet.
"Tell us what you found," Ryan said.
Claire took a breath.
"After my mother died, I was going through old files because I needed documents for the estate."
"Okay."
"One of the folders was from the year Ryan and I were married."
Ryan frowned.
"Why would you still have that?"
"Because we owned a house together."
He nodded slowly.
That made sense.
"When I found the folder, there was another document mixed in."
"What document?" Linda asked.
"A medical form."
Nobody spoke.
Claire continued.
"It had Ryan's name on it."
Ryan looked confused.
"My name?"
"Yes."
"What kind of medical form?"
Claire hesitated.
"A fertility consultation."
Emily looked at Ryan.
He immediately shook his head.
"No."
The speed of his answer was different from before.
This was not hiding.
This was shock.
"I never had a fertility consultation."
Claire said nothing.
Ryan stared at the phone.
"Claire."
"I know what you're going to say."
"Because it's not true."
"I know."
"Then why are we talking about it?"
"Because the document was not about you."
The room became still.
Emily looked between them.
"What does that mean?"
Claire answered quietly.
"It had your name on it, Ryan, but the information inside belonged to someone else."
My skin prickled.
The same phrase again.
Wrong file.
Wrong information.
Someone else's records.
"Whose?" Ryan asked.
Claire paused.
"I don't know."
Nobody liked that answer.
Not because it was useless.
Because it sounded familiar.
The entire day had been built on people knowing just enough to be afraid.
"What does this have to do with the baby?" Emily asked.
Claire sighed.
"The document mentioned a genetic concern."
Emily's hand moved to her stomach.
"About my baby?"
"No."
The answer came quickly.
Claire continued.
"That's the point."
Nobody moved.
"The information was not connected to you."
Ryan stood up.
"Then why would it be in my name?"
"I don't know."
"Where did you get it?"
"I told you."
"No."
His voice became sharper.
"Where did you get it from?"
Claire went quiet.
Ryan looked like he already knew the answer.
"You didn't just find it in an old box."
Another silence.
Then Claire said:
"No."
Emily looked at him.
"What is happening?"
Ryan sat back down.
He looked older.
"I need to call my attorney."
Everyone stared at him.
"Why?" Emily asked.
Ryan looked at her.
And for the first time that day, I saw something besides fear.
I saw shame.
"Because the document came from my old workplace."
"What workplace?"
Ryan looked down.
"The clinic."
The word seemed to pull the air out of the room.
"What clinic?" I asked.
Ryan answered quietly.
"The fertility clinic where Claire and I went when we were trying to have a child."
Emily stared at him.
"You never told me you went through that."
Ryan swallowed.
"Because it was years ago."
"That doesn't answer the question."
"I didn't think it mattered."
Emily looked away.
Again.
That phrase.
I didn't think it mattered.
How many times had people used those words when what they really meant was, I didn't want to deal with the consequences of telling you?
"When Claire and I got divorced, we stopped the treatments," Ryan said.
"Treatments?"
"Yes."
Emily looked at him.
"You were trying to have a baby."
Ryan nodded.
"Yes."
"And you never told me."
"I didn't think I had to."
The hurt on Emily's face was immediate.
Not jealousy.
Not anger.
Something more complicated.
Grief for a version of her husband she never knew existed.
Everyone carries old lives inside them.
The hard part is discovering that someone you love has a whole room in their house you were never allowed to enter.
"I thought you couldn't have children," Emily said.
Ryan looked confused.
"I never said that."
"You said you never expected to be a father."
"Because after the divorce, I thought it wouldn't happen."
Emily looked down.
"I thought you meant you didn't want kids."
"No."
Ryan's voice broke slightly.
"I wanted them."
The honesty came too late.
But it was still honest.
Claire spoke again.
"The document is why I started looking into it."
Ryan looked at the phone.
"What did you find?"
"That the clinic had a records problem."
"What kind of problem?"
"I don't know the full details."
"Then what do you know?"
"I know someone accessed old records."
My stomach tightened.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"Then why contact us?"
"Because when I saw Emily's pregnancy announcement online, I recognized something."
Emily looked up.
"What?"
"The doctor."
Everyone froze.
May you like
"What doctor?" Ryan asked.
"The one listed on the document."
