Chương 7
Eli nodded, but he did not look convinced.
Mara had seen that expression before.
Not on children.
On adults who had spent too long learning that honesty could come with consequences.
Daniel glanced at Claire.
"Can you tell me more about the video?"
Claire looked toward Eli.
"I don't know what video he means."
Eli immediately lowered his eyes.
Mara noticed the reaction.
Not guilt.
Not exactly.
More like disappointment that his mother did not know.
"Rachel showed it to you," Claire said gently.
"Yes."
"What was happening in it?"
Eli's fingers tightened around the dinosaur.
"I don't want to say."
Daniel leaned back slightly.
"That's okay."
Claire looked relieved for half a second.
Then Daniel continued.
"But we need to understand why you don't want to say."
Eli stared at the floor.
"Because if I say it wrong, she will know."
"Who?"
"Rachel."
The name seemed to fill the small office.
Mara watched Claire carefully.
Her daughter looked like she wanted to speak but was afraid that any word she chose would make things worse.
"What makes you think she will know?" Daniel asked.
Eli whispered, "Because she showed me the video before."
Mara frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Eli looked at her.
"She showed me something I did before I told her about it."
The counselor's pen stopped again.
"She knew before you told her?"
Eli nodded.
"She said she could always tell when I was lying."
Claire looked confused.
"But how?"
Eli shrugged.
"I don't know."
Daniel closed the folder.
"Would it be okay if I talked with you alone for a few minutes, Eli?"
The boy looked at Claire.
She nodded.
"You can tell him if you want."
Eli stood slowly.
Before he followed Daniel to the other side of the office, he leaned toward Claire.
"Are you still my mom?"
The question broke something in her face.
"Yes."
"Even if I messed up?"
Claire reached for his hand.
"Especially then."
He nodded once.
Then he walked with Daniel behind a small divider near the bookshelf.
Mara and Claire sat in silence.
The office had the uncomfortable stillness of places where people waited for information they feared receiving.
A clock on the wall ticked loudly.
Mara had always hated loud clocks.
They made every second feel like a decision.
Claire rubbed her palms together.
"I don't know what to do."
Mara looked at her.
"Stop saying that."
Claire looked surprised.
"Why?"
"Because you do know."
"What?"
"You know the next thing."
Claire looked down.
"I need to protect him."
"Yes."
"I need to find out what Rachel did."
"Yes."
"I need to admit I let this happen."
Mara did not answer immediately.
Claire looked up.
"Don't you?"
"I think you need to understand why it happened."
Claire frowned.
"Isn't that the same thing?"
"No."
Mara folded her hands in her lap.
"If you only punish yourself, you will spend all your energy proving you are terrible."
Claire looked away.
"And then?"
"And then Eli still needs a mother."
The words stayed with her.
Claire wiped at her face quickly.
"I hate that you are right."
Mara almost smiled.
Almost.
"I know."
For a moment, they were just mother and daughter again.
Not opponents.
Not two people defending different sides.
Two tired women sitting in a school office trying to figure out how they had arrived there.
The moment ended when Daniel returned.
Eli followed behind him.
His expression had not changed much.
That worried Mara more than if he had cried.
Children who had been frightened for too long often became very good at looking fine.
Daniel sat down.
"I need to ask about the video again."
Claire nodded.
"Eli says Rachel showed him a recording from inside your home."
"Inside my home?"
"Yes."
Claire looked confused.
"I don't have cameras."
Mara felt something tighten.
"Does Rachel?"
Claire looked at her.
"I don't know."
Daniel opened the folder.
"Eli said the video showed him doing something that he was later questioned about."
Claire looked at her son.
"What did you do?"
Eli hesitated.
"I broke something."
"What?"
"The picture frame."
Claire went still.
"Which picture frame?"
"The one in the hallway."
Mara remembered.
The photograph of Claire and Eli from his birthday party.
The one Claire had picked up the night before.
"How did Rachel know?"
Eli looked at Daniel.
"She said she saw it."
"When?"
"I don't know."
Daniel looked at Claire.
"Was Rachel in the house that day?"
Claire shook her head slowly.
"No."
The answer came with uncertainty.
Not because she did not believe herself.
Because she was beginning to question what she knew.
Mara noticed.
"When did the picture frame break?" she asked.
Eli looked down.
"After the questions started."
The room went quiet.
Claire turned toward him.
"What?"
"I was mad."
His voice cracked slightly.
"I wanted you to stop asking."
Claire looked devastated.
"I didn't know."
"I know."
That was the hardest part.
Not anger.
Not blame.
The child still trying to protect his mother from pain.
Daniel spoke softly.
"Did you tell Rachel you broke it?"
Eli shook his head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because she already knew."
Mara leaned forward.
"How did she know?"
Eli looked at her.
"She showed me the video."
Claire stood suddenly.
"Wait."
Everyone looked at her.
"Rachel knew about the frame before I did."
Her voice became quieter.
"She told me Eli was lying because he said he didn't break it."
Mara felt the pieces shifting.
Not connecting yet.
But moving.
Claire sat back down slowly.
Daniel noticed the change.
"What are you thinking?"
Claire stared at the floor.
"I thought she was helping me find out the truth."
"And now?"
Claire swallowed.
"Now I think she already knew the answer she wanted."
No one spoke.
The sentence changed the room.
Because it was no longer only about discipline.
It was about whether someone had been building a case against a child.
Daniel closed the folder.
May you like
"I need to speak with your sister."
Claire nodded.
