Chương 7

“The board will issue the invitation. I’m telling you before the language gets softened.”

Logan watched his mother.

“What are they voting on?”

Catherine kept both hands on the wheel.

“Whether to appoint an independent investigator, whether Charles remains chair, and whether the accessibility contract should be suspended pending review.”

Maya felt the device squeal faintly. She pressed a finger behind her ear until it stopped.

“Will Charles be there?”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you want me to say?”

Catherine looked at her through the mirror.

“What you choose to say is not mine to design.”

It was the correct answer.

Maya still did not trust it.

That night, Tessa Moore sent her a message.

I need to tell you something, but not where people can record me.

Maya stared at the screen.

She typed:

Then write it.

Tessa replied:

I can’t.

You mean you won’t.

A long pause followed.

Then:

Vanessa didn’t get the override code from Mr. Bell.

Maya sat upright.

Where did she get it?

Tessa’s typing indicator appeared and vanished several times.

Finally:

Brooke.

Maya read the name twice.

How did Brooke get it?

No answer came.

At school, Brooke was known as Vanessa’s echo. She laughed first, repeated insults louder, and carried an emergency sewing kit because Vanessa hated loose buttons. Her father owned three car dealerships. Her mother volunteered in the admissions office twice a week.

Maya opened the board packet from the previous month and searched the admissions staff list.

Brooke’s mother, Denise Lane, was not an employee. Volunteers did not have administrator credentials.

She messaged Tessa again.

Where did Brooke get the code?

Tessa replied fifteen minutes later.

Her mom photographs everything.

That was all.

Officer Keene answered Maya’s call on the fourth ring. Maya told her about the messages. Keene instructed her not to delete anything, not to confront Brooke, and not to promise Tessa confidentiality.

“Can you get her to speak to me?” Keene asked.

“I can ask.”

“Ask once. Don’t pressure her.”

Maya looked at Tessa’s unfinished message thread.

“Do you believe her?”

“I believe she has a reason to contact you.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“It’s what I can answer.”

Maya sent Tessa Officer Keene’s number.

Tessa responded:

You think the police protect people like me at schools like this?

Maya’s fingers hovered over the keyboard.

She understood the fear. She also understood that Tessa had stood beside Vanessa while the device broke.

She wrote:

No. I think you helped hurt me and now you’re scared. Both can be true.

Tessa did not respond that night.

On Monday morning, Maya returned to Briarwood for the first time since the rooftop.

The school had washed the front steps twice, though nobody had spilled anything there. Security officers checked every vehicle. Reporters stood across the road. Students who had been permitted back for exams gathered in small groups and stopped talking when Maya crossed the courtyard.

She wore the same gray pleated skirt and a fresh white shirt. Her tie remained loose because she disliked the fabric against her throat. The loaner device was visible behind her right ear. She had considered covering it with her hair, then tied her hair back instead.

Liam from chemistry approached her near the fountain.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

He shoved both hands into his pockets.

“I meant what I texted.”

“I know.”

“I should’ve said something before.”

“Yes.”

He looked relieved and hurt at the same time, as though he had expected forgiveness to arrive because he had named his failure correctly.

Maya adjusted her backpack.

“Was there anything else?”

“No. I mean, I saved the livestream.”

She stopped.

“The whole thing?”

“From when Vanessa started it in the stairwell.”

Maya looked at him.

“The clip online starts on the roof.”

“I had notifications on for her account. Don’t judge me.”

“I’m trying.”

He took out his phone.

“She started streaming before they opened the roof door. You can see Brooke entering the code.”

Officer Keene had obtained the platform’s archived copy, but legal requests moved slowly. Liam’s screen recording could provide the missing sequence immediately.

“Send it to Keene.”

“I did.”

“When?”

“Friday.”

“Why didn’t you tell me Friday?”

His face reddened.

“My dad said not to get involved. Then he watched the video and said the school would handle it. Then the school’s statement called it a conflict, and I got mad.”

Maya studied him.

“So you did the right thing after you got mad at the wrong people.”

“Pretty much.”

“That sounds human.”

“I was hoping for better.”

“So was I.”

The board meeting took place in the Vale Auditorium beneath a painted ceiling funded by Logan’s grandmother. Folding tables formed a wide horseshoe on the stage. Board members sat behind microphones and water bottles. Charles Crowe occupied the chair at the center even though his authority had been temporarily limited.

He looked older than he had in photographs. His silver tie was perfectly straight. Vanessa’s eyes and his were the same shape, sharp at the corners, built for expressions that made other people question themselves.

Catherine Vale sat three seats away from him.

Dr. Park opened the meeting by acknowledging “the profound harm visible in the circulated recording.” He announced that the session would include private legal matters and public comment. The livestream camera at the back of the auditorium displayed a red light.

Maya sat in the front row with Elena, Officer Keene, and a disability rights attorney named Priya Raman, who had agreed to advise them without charge. Logan sat across the aisle beside Coach Danner. He wore no team jacket.

Vanessa entered through a side door with her mother and two attorneys.

The room changed.

She wore a dark dress instead of her school uniform. Her black hair was pulled into the same sleek low bun. Faint pink remained near one ear where the industrial paint had stained her skin. She did not look at Maya.

Brooke and Tessa did not attend.

Charles watched his daughter take a seat behind him. His face revealed nothing.
