Chương 9

Vanessa had attended my fortieth birthday dinner while already involved with him.

She had stood in my kitchen, drinking wine beneath the pendant lights my father installed, and told me Julian was lucky to have a wife who understood entrepreneurship.

I locked myself in the downstairs bathroom and sat on the tile.

One piece near the wall sat slightly higher than the others. My father had laid that floor himself after firing a contractor for arriving drunk. Julian used to catch his sock on the raised edge and threaten to grind it down.

I always stopped him.

I pressed my thumb against the uneven tile.

For the first time since the airport, I wished I had confronted them immediately.

I imagined walking across the terminal and throwing coffee into Julian’s face. I imagined the brown stain spreading across Vanessa’s cobalt dress. I imagined strangers turning, phones rising, my humiliation becoming public enough to feel less lonely.

It would have changed nothing.

Still, the fantasy comforted me.

My phone rang on the sink.

Unknown number.

I ignored it.

It rang again.

On the third call, I answered.

“Amelia?”

Vanessa’s voice was thinner than I remembered.

“How did you get this number?”

“I have had it for years.”

Of course she had. She had texted me holiday photographs, asked for restaurant recommendations, and once called because Julian left his laptop at home.

“What do you want?”

“I need to talk to you.”

“No.”

“Julian lied to me.”

The selfishness of the sentence almost impressed me.

“You knew he was married.”

“I am not claiming otherwise.”

“You knew the house belonged to me.”

“Yes.”

“You helped him move money.”

“I thought he had legal authority.”

“I heard you at the airport.”

Silence.

“I know,” she said.

“You were celebrating.”

“I said things I am ashamed of.”

“You are ashamed because the transfer failed.”

“That is not fair.”

I laughed.

“No,” she said quietly. “It isn’t.”

I stood and opened the bathroom door because I could no longer tolerate the small room.

“What did Julian lie about?”

“He told me your marriage had been over for years.”

“We went to Santa Fe for our anniversary five months ago.”

“He said it was for appearances.”

“Appearances for whom?”

“I did not ask enough questions.”

“You asked about my house.”

“He said you were using it to force him out of Vale.”

“And that made taking it acceptable?”

“No.”

“But you helped.”

“Yes.”

Her willingness to agree irritated me more than denial might have.

“He told me you had already accepted a settlement,” she continued. “The house for your interest in Vale. He said Northstar was part of the separation.”

“You knew my signature was copied.”

Another pause.

“I knew documents were being assembled from prior authorizations.”

“That is an expensive way to say yes.”

“I did not forge Martin Cho’s signature.”

“Who did?”

“I don’t know.”

“Convenient.”

“I am calling because Julian removed me from Northstar’s bank access yesterday. He told Vale’s board the entire structure was mine.”

“Wasn’t it?”

“The schedules were mine. The instructions were his.”

“You followed them.”

“Yes.”

Her voice broke slightly, then steadied.

“He is going to say I created the false documents. He asked the IT director to archive Vale’s old server. Yesterday he took two boxes from the office.”

“Tell your attorney.”

“I do not have one.”

“Get one.”

“I need you to know there are emails.”

“Then preserve them.”

“He will destroy both of us.”

There it was.

Not remorse.

Self-protection.

Evelyn had told me that useful help rarely arrived pure. People cooperated because they were frightened, cornered, guilty, angry, or trying to reduce their own losses.

Vanessa’s fear did not make her trustworthy.

It made her motivated.

“Send the material to your lawyer,” I said. “Your lawyer can contact mine.”

“I cannot afford a lawyer.”

“You own part of Northstar.”

“Not anymore.”

“You helped empty my account.”

“I know.”

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Traffic moved in the background on her end. A turn signal clicked rhythmically.

Then Vanessa said, “I loved him.”

“So did I.”

The words surprised both of us.

She began to cry.

I felt no tenderness toward her. I also felt no pleasure.

“I am sorry,” she said.

I ended the call.

An hour later, an email arrived from an unfamiliar address.

It contained screenshots of messages between Julian and Vanessa.

Create Northstar this week. Use the Wyoming registration service.

Move the Hawthorne and Bell contracts first.

Prepare Amelia’s approvals from the signed packet. She will not know the difference.

On another thread, Vanessa asked:

Do we need a fresh signature for the house collateral?

Julian replied:

No time. Use what we have. We clean formalities after funding.

I forwarded everything to Evelyn, Daniel, and Priya without responding.

Evelyn requested original files and metadata, not screenshots. Daniel warned me that Vanessa might be controlling what she revealed. Priya said partial cooperation often began with material that harmed someone else more than the person producing it.

Vanessa retained counsel three days later.

Her attorney offered records in exchange for assurances that we would not publicly identify her as the architect of Northstar.

Daniel refused to promise what the evidence had not yet established.

Negotiations stalled.

Meanwhile, Vale continued to weaken.

A project coordinator named Miguel Santos came to my house one evening carrying a blue folder.

He stood on the porch and looked as if he expected someone to arrest him.

“I brought reports,” he said.

“What reports?”

“The project margins. The versions before Mr. Vale changed them.”

I did not invite him inside.

Daniel had warned me not to accept company documents through questionable means.

“Do you still work there?”

“For now.”

“Did you take originals?”

“No. Copies.”

“Does anyone know you are here?”

“My wife.”

May you like

He looked over his shoulder toward the street.

I called Evelyn. She told me Miguel should retain the documents, speak with independent counsel, and provide them through proper channels if requested. I could not take the folder directly.
