Chương 6

Evan glanced over from the window. “They do that.”

“It tastes strange.”

“They’re vitamins, Lily. They’re not supposed to taste good.”

The answer was ordinary enough to survive.

That afternoon, she forgot an appointment with the nursery contractor. Two days later, she fell asleep in the bathtub with the water running. Evan found her and pulled her out. He wrapped her in a towel, knelt in front of her, and cried.

She had comforted him.

At Dr. Kane’s office, Lily stared at her own hands.

“He cried a lot when there was an audience of one,” she said.

“What did his crying make you do?”

“Stop asking questions.”

The poisoning did not begin as a perfect plan.

The investigation eventually showed that Evan and Claudia had spent months discussing Lily as a problem, but their early messages were not criminal. Claudia complained that Lily ignored family advice. Evan said Lily was becoming emotional. They agreed that a private mental-health evaluation might be necessary.

Then Lily told Evan she wanted to move closer to Grace after the baby was born.

She had not threatened divorce. She had not discussed custody. She wanted an apartment where she could walk to a grocery store and where Claudia could not enter with her own key.

Evan told his mother.

Claudia wrote back, You cannot let her isolate the baby from us.

Evan answered, I’m handling it.

The first documented purchase connected to the plan occurred three days later, when Evan ordered a locking pill crusher through an office account. He later told police it was for travel supplements. The invoice went to Vanessa for approval.

Vanessa approved it with a thumbs-up emoji.

For weeks, she maintained that she had not known what it was for.

The bracelet became the first reason Lily doubted her.

Detective Ruiz returned it in an evidence bag six weeks after the hearing. Vanessa had finally admitted that Evan gave it to her the night Jonah was born. He said Lily had thrown it at him during an argument and wanted it gone.

There had been no argument. Lily had been recovering from an emergency cesarean delivery and could barely lift herself from bed. The bracelet had disappeared from a zippered compartment in her hospital bag.

“Why was Vanessa at the hospital?” Grace asked.

“She said she brought company documents for Evan to sign.”

“At midnight?”

“He was leaving me alone with a nurse every twenty minutes.”

“You knew?”

“I knew he was going somewhere.”

Grace held the evidence bag toward the light. “Do you want it back?”

“I don’t know.”

“It’s yours.”

“So was he.”

Grace lowered the bag.

Lily placed it in the dresser drawer beneath a stack of nursing pads. She did not open the seal.

Vanessa requested a meeting with the prosecutor in early September.

Her attorney asked for immunity. The prosecutor refused. They negotiated a limited agreement under which truthful statements could be considered in charging decisions but would not protect Vanessa from prosecution if she lied or had participated in the poisoning.

She spoke for four hours.

She admitted the affair with Evan had begun seven months before Jonah’s birth. Evan told her the marriage was over in everything but paperwork. He described Lily as controlling, volatile, and obsessed with keeping him from his child.

Vanessa believed him partly because she wanted to and partly because Lily’s behavior seemed to confirm it.

At company dinners, Lily sometimes lost track of conversations. She once accused Vanessa of moving her handbag, only to discover it beneath her own chair. During a charity auction, Lily became disoriented and locked herself in a restroom for half an hour. Evan apologized to everyone and led her out by the arm.

Vanessa remembered the bruises.

She also remembered Evan’s thumb pressed against one of them while he whispered something that made Lily go silent.

She had not considered the gesture important until she saw the courtroom recording.

Vanessa admitted helping Evan assemble the custody file. She organized photographs, medical dates, text messages, and videos. She edited a presentation for Marcus showing Lily asleep on the kitchen floor. She cropped out a coffee mug knocked over beside her and removed the first six seconds, in which Evan’s voice could be heard telling Lily to stand after she said she could not feel her legs.

Marcus had received the original files as well as the edited presentation.

He later claimed he had reviewed only the presentation.

Vanessa also disclosed a second phone.

Evan used it to communicate with her because he did not want personal messages appearing on the company account. She had kept it after his arrest, powered off, inside a cosmetics bag at her mother’s house.

The phone contained messages no one had yet seen.

Some were affectionate. Many were dull. Evan complained about contractors, travel delays, and Claudia’s habit of scheduling breakfasts before eight. Vanessa sent photographs from hotel rooms and asked when he would tell Lily the truth.

His answers became less romantic as the pregnancy progressed.

Soon.

After the board meeting.

When she’s stable.

When the baby is safe.

Two weeks before the kitchen recording, Vanessa wrote, You said she would be out of the house by now.

Evan replied, These things have to look natural.

Vanessa asked what he meant.

He did not answer for fourteen hours.

Then he sent a photograph of a custody-preparation checklist produced by Marcus’s office. One item read: Establish documented pattern of impaired judgment.

Vanessa told investigators she assumed Evan meant he would wait for Lily to have another episode.

“Another episode he was causing?” Ruiz asked.

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn’t know.”

“You knew he was waiting for her to fail.”

“That’s not the same.”

“No,” Ruiz said. “It isn’t.”

Lily learned the details from the prosecutor two days before the grand jury convened.

She sat in a conference room with Naomi and Assistant District Attorney Carmen Doyle. Jonah was three months old and sleeping in a stroller beside the wall. His hair had begun to grow in a soft dark ridge along the center of his head.
