Chương 11

Leah adjusted her glasses. “Truth and innocence are not synonyms.”
“Then what protects her?”
“Cooperation agreements, prosecutorial judgment, public pressure, and evidence showing why she acted. None is guaranteed.”
Daniel hated answers that arrived in plural.
Ethan finally agreed to an interview six days after Lily left intensive care.
His attorneys demanded immunity. Prosecutors refused. They negotiated a limited agreement allowing him to provide information without immediate arrest, while preserving the possibility of charges.
Alvarez told Daniel only what she was permitted to share.
“Ethan says he invited Lily because he wanted to give her Caleb Rios’s settlement file,” she said. “He found it while searching his father’s computer for records related to a trust.”
“What trust?”
“His own. He believed his father was restricting access to punish him.”
“That sounds like Ethan.”
“You have spoken to him once.”
“I watched him laugh beside my daughter’s bed.”
Alvarez’s expression did not soften. “People can be guilty of one thing and truthful about another.”
“What did he say happened?”
They stood outside Lily’s rehabilitation room while a therapist worked with her inside.
“Ethan met Lily at Halden House,” Alvarez said. “He gave her a printed settlement summary. Before he could send the digital copy, Tyler arrived. Brandon came five minutes later. They knew Ethan had accessed the file because Owen Cole’s office monitors downloads from his private cloud.”
“Why did they care about one settlement?”
“Because the document referenced the student safety account and included an attachment code tied to Argent Relief.”
“Night Glass.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked through the glass. Lily was trying to identify words on cards while background noise played through headphones. She closed her eyes after each one.
Alvarez continued, “According to Ethan, Brandon demanded Lily’s laptop and phone. She refused. Tyler grabbed the laptop. Lily struck him with a lamp.”
A surprised sound escaped Daniel before he could stop it.
Alvarez almost smiled. “The lamp survived.”
“What happened next?”
“Tyler shoved her into a wall. Ethan tried to separate them. Brandon took Lily’s phone. She bit his hand.”
“That explains the blood in the photographs.”
“Some of it. Tyler hit her with a metal award from the mantel.”
Daniel’s hands became fists.
“Once,” Alvarez said. “Behind the ear. Lily fell. Ethan says she was conscious and tried to crawl toward the door. Brandon held her wrists while Tyler demanded the password to her laptop.”
Daniel saw the bruises again.
“They broke her jaw after she was down.”
Alvarez did not look away. “Ethan says Tyler kicked her twice. Brandon says Ethan is lying. Tyler says Lily attacked first and fell during a struggle.”
“And Ethan?”
“He admits he did not call 911 for twenty-one minutes.”
“Why?”
“Brandon told him they could fix it. Tyler was crying. Ethan believed Lily would wake up.”
“Then they laughed in the hospital.”
“Ethan says Grant Whitmore told them to present a united front. He says the check was meant to secure an immediate nondisclosure agreement before you obtained counsel. He also says he laughed because Tyler laughed.”
Daniel turned toward her. “That is his defense?”
“It is an explanation.”
“It is cowardice.”
“Yes.”
The direct agreement startled him.
Alvarez added, “Cowardice is common. That does not make it harmless.”
Lily’s therapist opened the door. The session was over.
Daniel entered and sat beside her. She could speak a little now through the fixation, each word careful and blurred. Most conversations still happened through typing.
He told her what Alvarez had shared.
Lily listened without interrupting. When he finished, she typed:
ETHAN SENT GO TO NORA.
“He may have saved her.”
AFTER HELPING TRAP ME.
“Yes.”
She looked at the wall.
Daniel waited.
Finally, she typed:
I WANT TO HEAR HIM SAY IT.
“Why?”
BECAUSE EVERYONE SPEAKS FOR HIM.
Daniel understood more than he wanted to.
Lily agreed to a controlled video meeting with Ethan through attorneys. Maya objected on medical grounds until Lily promised to stop if symptoms worsened. Alvarez attended off-camera. Daniel sat across the room, outside Ethan’s view.
Ethan appeared on a laptop screen in a conference room beside two lawyers. He wore a plain gray sweater instead of the navy designer hoodie. Without Tyler and Brandon beside him, he looked younger than twenty-one.
Lily’s face was still braced. She did not attempt speech.
Ethan began with, “I’m sorry.”
Lily typed. A text-to-speech program read her words in a flat synthetic voice.
“What are you sorry for?”
Ethan looked toward one attorney. The lawyer gave no visible instruction.
“For what happened.”
“What did you do?”
“I invited you there.”
“What else?”
“I didn’t call for help soon enough.”
“What else?”
His throat moved. “I laughed at the hospital.”
“What else?”
Ethan stared at the table.
Lily waited.
Daniel watched Ethan’s fingers press into his own palms.
“I told Brandon you had copies,” Ethan said.
Lily’s breathing changed.
Ethan continued quickly. “I thought he’d help me scare Tyler into giving back the laptop. I didn’t know he would bring Shaw. I didn’t know Tyler would—”
The synthetic voice interrupted.
“You knew they paid Caleb’s family.”
“Yes.”
“You knew they erased the video.”
“I suspected.”
“You knew they did it before.”
Ethan’s eyes filled, but he did not cry. “I knew there were payments.”
“And you invited me into an empty house.”
“I was going to give you the file.”
“You wanted me to save you from your father.”
The sentence stopped him.
Ethan looked up.
Lily typed again.
“You did not want truth. You wanted leverage.”
One of Ethan’s attorneys leaned forward. “My client has acknowledged serious mistakes, but characterizations of motive—”
Ethan lifted a hand. “She’s right.”
The attorney whispered something. Ethan shook his head.

“My father froze my trust after I wrecked a car,” Ethan said. “I found the settlement file while looking for a way to force him to restore it. I thought if I gave it to Lily, she’d publish, and he’d need me to help contain it.”
Daniel felt disgust rise, then watched Ethan’s face collapse under the weight of hearing himself.
