Chương 12

She placed her palm flat on the table.

“Stop.”

They did.

Not because she had authority, she realized, but because they were tired.

“I am not paying your debt,” she said.

Lorena’s face hardened instinctively.

Mariana continued before she could speak.

“I will pay Diego’s school directly through the end of the academic year. I will pay verified medical costs. Nothing else.”

“You want us homeless?” Lorena asked.

“No.”

“That is what will happen.”

Rogelio said, “We can move.”

“To where?”

“My brother offered the apartment above his shop.”

Lorena stared at him. “In Naucalpan?”

“It is available.”

“You said it was too small.”

“It is.”

“You said the neighborhood—”

“I said a lot because I thought Mariana might lend us money.”

The room went quiet again.

Lorena looked at her husband as though the apartment had already vanished around her.

Mariana felt pity, anger, and a faint ugly satisfaction. She disliked herself for the satisfaction but could not pretend it was absent.

“The adviser is still available,” she said. “I will pay for the consultation.”

Lorena laughed without humor. “How generous.”

“It is the last financial help I am offering you.”

“You paid for everything so you could say that sentence.”

Mariana’s fingers tightened against the table.

“No,” she said. “I paid because I was afraid of what would happen if I did not.”

Lorena blinked.

Mariana had not known the sentence was true until she heard it.

“When Papá died, every missed payment felt like the beginning of the next disaster,” she said. “I thought if I kept everything current, none of us could fall apart.”

“You also liked us needing you.”

The words landed cleanly.

Mariana looked at her sister.

“Yes,” she said.

Camila lowered her gaze.

Lorena’s anger faltered.

Mariana went on. “I liked being the person who could fix it. I liked not having to ask whether you loved me because you called when you needed something.”

“That is horrible.”

“Yes.”

Rogelio shifted in his chair.

“But it does not excuse what you did,” Mariana said. “Understanding my part does not erase yours.”

Lorena looked at the photographs again.

“What do you want me to post?”

“The truth.”

“What truth? The whole truth? That I am broke? That I told my son to ruin a cake because I wanted a video? Should I post our bank statements too?”

“No.”

“Then what exactly?”

Mariana thought of the attorney’s draft, six paragraphs of precise language designed to create legal protection. It was accurate and dead.

“Say the video was shared without permission. Say your statement about armed security was false. Say Diego was encouraged by an adult to interrupt the candles and that Emiliano did nothing wrong. Ask people to stop sharing images of both boys.”

Lorena’s mouth tightened. “And name yourself as the innocent one.”

“Do not mention me at all.”

That surprised her.

“What about the full video?” Rogelio asked.

“I will not publish it.”

Lorena looked at the envelope. “Why not?”

“Because it would punish Diego and Emiliano again.”

“And me.”

“Yes.”

Lorena swallowed.

Mariana gathered the photographs and returned them to the envelope.

“In exchange,” she said, “you do not post, sell, describe, or provide footage from that party. You do not contact the photographer again. You do not use either child for content about this.”

“You cannot control my account.”

“No. But I can decide what I do if you violate Emiliano’s privacy again.”

The threat remained incomplete. It was better that way.

Lorena stared at the table for a long time.

Then she said, “I will post it.”

“Without ads, links, or dramatic music.”

A trace of the old Lorena appeared. “You think I would put a skincare link under an apology?”

Rogelio and Camila looked at her.

She closed her eyes. “Fine. I hear it.”

The apology went up that night.

Lorena wrote that she had encouraged a prank without considering the danger or humiliation it could cause. She said the claim about armed security was untrue. She asked people to stop sharing the video and to leave both children alone. She did not mention debt, sponsorships, or the phone.

Some people praised her accountability. Others accused her of posting under legal pressure. Several demanded the full footage. One commenter said the entire family should disappear from the internet.

The video did not disappear.

Its spread slowed.

At school the next week, no one showed Emiliano another image. That did not mean no one had seen it. He became sensitive to laughter behind him and stopped eating birthday cake when a classmate brought one on Thursday. He told the counselor he was not hungry.

Mariana learned this because the counselor asked Emiliano’s permission before calling her.

She was beginning to understand how much protection depended on consent.

The firm’s anonymous reviews were removed gradually. One client postponed a contract, then returned after Sofía handled the meeting Mariana had been too distracted to lead. Mariana thanked her and received the answer, “You can repay me by reviewing page fourteen before signing.”

Rogelio and Lorena attended the restructuring consultation.

They moved into the apartment above Rogelio’s brother’s hardware shop three weeks later. Lorena sold the designer handbag from the party and several pieces of jewelry. She shut down her lifestyle account but kept a private page for friends. Rogelio took additional work managing restaurant operations for a hotel group. None of this transformed them into wiser people. They argued about every box, blamed each other for the move, and missed one deadline the adviser had clearly explained.

Mariana did not rescue them.

The first time Lorena called because the electricity deposit was higher than expected, Mariana listened and said, “That sounds difficult.”

Lorena waited.

Mariana said nothing else.

“You could at least pretend to think about it,” Lorena snapped.

“I did think about it.”

“And?”

“No.”

May you like

Lorena hung up.

Two days later, she called to ask whether their mother still had the folding table from old family parties. Mariana knew it was in Camila’s storage room but told Lorena to ask her directly.
