Chương 4

“I work here.”

Richard gave a small smile.

“I know.”

Everyone sat.

A folder was placed in front of Daniel.

He recognized the format.

Internal review documents.

His stomach tightened.

“This is unnecessary,” Daniel said.

Richard leaned back.

“We’re not removing you.”

“I didn’t say you were.”

“No, but you thought it.”

Daniel looked at him.

Richard folded his hands.

“You’ve built this company for a long time.”

“Yes.”

“And nobody questions what you’ve done.”

“But?”

Richard looked down briefly.

“But people are noticing changes.”

Daniel opened the folder.

The first pages contained performance reports.

The numbers were fine.

Better than fine.

Revenue was up.

Projects were ahead.

There were no failures.

Then he saw the notes.

Concerns about availability.

Delayed responses.

Missed informal meetings.

Reduced travel.

Daniel almost laughed.

“You’re reviewing me because I leave meetings on time now?”

Richard stayed calm.

“We’re reviewing you because you changed.”

Daniel closed the folder.

“People change.”

“Not always at the right time.”

The words irritated him.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked uncomfortable for the first time.

“It means this company depends on you.”

Daniel stared at him.

“And my daughter depends on me.”

Nobody answered.

The silence felt heavier than an argument.

Richard looked away.

“I’m not asking you to choose.”

“It sounds like you are.”

“I’m asking if you can do both.”

Daniel wanted to say yes immediately.

That was his instinct.

Say yes.

Handle it.

Carry everything.

But the image of Emma sitting alone with the paperwork returned to him.

The way she had said sometimes waiting meant letting something happen without you.

“I can,” Daniel said slowly.

Richard watched him.

“But I need to know something.”

“What?”

“Are you saying that because it’s true, or because you don’t know how to say no?”

Daniel did not answer.

For the first time in the meeting, Richard looked less like an opponent.

He looked like someone who had noticed a weakness Daniel had spent years hiding.

After the meeting, Daniel walked through the office without stopping.

People greeted him.

He responded.

But his mind was elsewhere.

Near the elevator, he heard two employees talking.

They stopped when they saw him.

That was enough.

Daniel kept walking.

He did not need to hear what they were saying.

He already knew.

At lunch, he went home.

Emma was surprised when she opened the door.

“You’re here.”

Daniel nodded.

“I wanted to see Lily.”

Emma stepped aside.

“She just woke up.”

The house was quiet.

Not empty.

Quiet.

There was a difference.

Daniel found Lily on the floor with a blanket around her.

The yellow toy sat beside her.

He sat down.

Emma watched from the doorway.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“The board is worried.”

Emma leaned against the wall.

“About you?”

“About work.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“It feels the same.”

Emma walked closer.

“What did they say?”

Daniel picked up the toy and handed it to Lily.

“They think I’m distracted.”

Emma watched their daughter grab it.

“Are you?”

The question hurt because it was fair.

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

Emma sat beside him.

“That scares you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked down.

“Because I spent my whole life being the person who could handle things.”

Emma was quiet.

Daniel rubbed the edge of the toy with his thumb.

“And now I have this one person I would do anything for, and I can’t guarantee anything.”

Emma’s expression softened.

“No one can.”

“I know.”

“No, I mean really know.”

He looked at her.

“You keep trying to become someone who cannot be hurt.”

Daniel looked away.

“That person doesn’t exist.”

“No.”

Emma smiled sadly.

“You just keep applying for the job.”

Daniel laughed quietly.

The sound surprised both of them.

Lily looked up at them.

Then she held the yellow toy toward Daniel.

He accepted it.

“Thank you,” he whispered.

Emma watched him.

“For what?”

He looked at their daughter.

“For reminding me I’m already here.”

That evening, Daniel returned to work.

Not because he was running away.

Because he had decided he needed to face something.

He opened his calendar and removed three meetings.

Then he moved two others.

Then he called his assistant.

“I need something changed.”

“What?”

“If someone needs me, they schedule time.”

She paused.

“Okay.”

“No more pretending I’m available every second.”

Another pause.

“Are you sure?”

Daniel looked at the picture on his desk.

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“But I think that’s the point.”

Before leaving, he noticed an email from the specialist.

A confirmation for the upcoming evaluation.

He opened it.

Read it.

Closed it.

Then opened it again.

This time, he did not feel like the message controlled him.

It was still frightening.

It was still uncertain.

But it was something they would walk into together.

When he arrived home, Emma was sitting at the dining table.

Lily was asleep upstairs.

The small yellow toy rested near the edge of the dark wooden surface.

“You changed your schedule,” Emma said.

Daniel stopped.

“How do you know?”

“Your assistant called me.”

He frowned.

“Why?”

“She wanted to make sure you weren’t having some kind of emotional breakdown and making random decisions.”

Daniel stared at her.

Then he laughed.

“She said that?”

“Not exactly.”

“What did she say?”

Emma smiled.

“She said you sounded different.”

Daniel looked toward the toy.

Different.

The word stayed with him.

He did not feel stronger.

He did not feel fearless.

He only felt like he had finally stopped pretending fear was something he could defeat.

He sat beside Emma.

For a while, they listened to the quiet house.

Then Emma reached over and took his hand.

Neither of them spoke.

They did not need to.

For that night, at least, they were not trying to predict tomorrow.

They were just there.

The days before the evaluation passed in a strange mixture of routine and anticipation.

Daniel had expected the waiting to feel unbearable.

May you like

Instead, it became something quieter.

A constant presence that followed him from room to room.
