Chương 3

Claire had always disliked hospitals.

Not because of illness.

Because of the waiting.

Waiting gave people too much space to imagine every possible disaster.

She sat in a plastic chair outside Noah’s room while Elena spoke with the doctors.

Lily sat beside her wearing a borrowed sweater from a nurse because her dress had been taken away for cleaning.

The sweater was too large.

The sleeves covered her hands.

She kept pulling them over her fingers.

Claire noticed because she did the same thing when she was nervous.

She had not realized they shared that habit until she saw Lily doing it.

“You like that color?” Claire asked.

Lily looked down.

“The sweater?”

A small nod.

“It’s blue.”

“Blue is good.”

Claire smiled slightly.

“Why?”

Lily shrugged.

“Because my brother likes blue.”

Claire looked toward the hospital room.

“He told you that?”

Another small shrug.

“He can’t talk.”

The answer was so serious that Claire almost laughed.

Almost.

Instead, she smiled.

“You’re right.”

For a moment, Lily looked less like a frightened child and more like a normal three-year-old.

Then a nurse walked past carrying a tray of newborn supplies.

Lily immediately became alert.

Her whole body changed.

Claire saw it happen.

The child who had almost relaxed disappeared.

“Is that for Noah?”

Claire looked at the tray.

“No, sweetheart.”

Lily watched it disappear down the hallway.

“Then why are they bringing things?”

Claire opened her mouth.

She stopped.

She had spent years in business meetings where people expected confident answers.

She knew how to explain complicated decisions.

She knew how to make investors feel calm when numbers looked terrible.

But a three-year-old asking why strangers carried baby blankets down a hospital hallway was harder.

“Because hospitals have lots of babies here,” Claire said.

Lily thought about that.

“Are their sisters taking care of them?”

The question landed harder than Claire expected.

“No,” Claire said quietly.

“Who is?”

Claire looked at the closed door.

“Usually their parents.”

Lily became silent.

She did not cry.

She did not ask where her mother was.

She simply pulled the oversized sweater sleeves farther over her hands.

A social worker named Maya arrived before noon.

She was younger than Claire expected, with a canvas bag full of forms and a notebook covered in stickers.

She sat with Lily for nearly twenty minutes without asking a single question.

That surprised Claire.

Most people wanted answers immediately.

Maya seemed willing to wait.

Eventually Lily picked up a small plastic toy from Maya’s bag.

It was a purple dinosaur.

“His name is Pickles,” Maya said.

Lily looked at the toy.

“Why?”

Maya smiled.

“I don’t know.”

“You named him?”

“Yes.”

“Why Pickles?”

Maya looked at the dinosaur.

“I think he looked like a Pickle.”

Lily stared at her.

Then, unexpectedly, she smiled.

It lasted less than a second.

But Claire saw it.

Maya saw it too.

She did not react dramatically.

She simply continued talking about the dinosaur.

That was when Claire realized something important.

Lily did not need people to convince her the world was safe.

She needed people to show her.

Later that afternoon, police found the first piece of information that changed everything.

The car that had brought Lily and Noah to the complex was registered to a woman named Hannah Reed.

Claire was standing near the hospital vending machines when Daniel told her.

“Hannah Reed is their mother,” he said.

Claire looked toward the hallway where Lily was sitting with Maya.

“Where is she?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“We’re trying to find her.”

“Trying?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“We know where she lives.”

“And?”

“She isn’t there.”

Claire waited.

Daniel looked at the floor.

“There are signs she left in a hurry.”

“What kind of signs?”

“Packed bags missing.”

“Her phone is turned off.”

“Her apartment manager says she hasn’t paid rent in two months.”

Claire felt a strange mixture of anger and confusion.

“She planned this?”

Daniel did not answer immediately.

“I don’t know.”

“She drove them there.”

“Yes.”

“She walked away.”

“Yes.”

“Then what else is there to know?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Sometimes people do things that look simple from the outside because we don’t know what happened before the moment we saw.”

Claire wanted to argue.

She almost did.

Because some part of her needed someone to blame.

But then she looked through the glass window at Lily.

The little girl was carefully placing the purple dinosaur beside a sleeping Noah’s blanket.

Not playing.

Guarding.

Claire lowered her voice.

“I don’t care what happened to her.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“I care what happens to them.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That’s probably the right place to start.”

The investigation continued through the evening.

And with every answer they found, another question appeared.

Hannah Reed had not vanished randomly.

She had left behind pieces of a life that seemed to be breaking apart.

Bills.

Missed appointments.

Messages she never answered.

A neighbor who remembered hearing arguments.

A landlord who remembered asking if she needed help.

But nobody had expected the answer to be two children sitting alone behind a locked gate.

Nobody had expected Lily to become the person protecting Noah from a world that was supposed to protect both of them.

And nobody, including Claire, was prepared for what they would discover when they finally learned what Hannah had been running from.

The first sign that Hannah Reed had not simply abandoned her children came from a voicemail nobody had listened to.

Daniel found it buried in a phone record after getting temporary access through the investigation.

The message was eleven seconds long.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Only Hannah breathing heavily before whispering one sentence.

“Please don’t let him find them.”

Then the recording ended.

Daniel listened to it twice before he called Claire.

He did not tell her everything over the phone.

He knew some information changed people the moment they heard it.

May you like

He wanted to speak to her in person.

Claire was sitting beside Lily when Daniel returned to the hospital.
