Chương 6

Because he understood fear.

People revealed more when they believed they were speaking to a person instead of an organization.

The location was a small coffee shop on the edge of an industrial neighborhood.

Nothing about it looked important.

That was probably why Claire chose it.

People who wanted privacy rarely went somewhere dramatic.

They went somewhere ordinary.

Stallone entered and saw her immediately.

She sat near the back wall with a paper cup untouched in front of her.

She looked younger than he expected.

Tired.

Nervous.

The kind of person who had spent too long convincing herself she was invisible.

She stood when he approached.

“Mr. Stallone.”

“Anthony.”

She nodded.

“Anthony.”

He sat across from her.

“You brought something.”

Claire looked toward the window.

“Before I give it to you, I need you to understand something.”

“I am listening.”

“I am not trying to destroy Elena.”

Stallone said nothing.

“I know what she did was wrong.”

“Then what are you trying to do?”

Claire looked down at her hands.

“Stop pretending it did not happen.”

The answer was quieter than he expected.

She reached into her bag and placed a small envelope on the table.

Inside were printed emails, copies of invoices, and handwritten notes.

Stallone scanned the pages.

Most of them were ordinary.

That was what made them dangerous.

The worst things rarely looked dramatic at first.

A payment here.

A conversation there.

A request that seemed harmless.

Then the pattern appeared.

Elena had been gathering information about Daniel’s finances.

She had asked questions about custody arrangements.

She had researched how someone’s reputation could affect legal disputes.

“She was preparing,” Stallone said.

Claire nodded.

“For months.”

“Why?”

“That is the part I do not know.”

Stallone looked at her.

“You know more than that.”

Claire looked uncomfortable.

“My daughter found something.”

“What?”

“A folder.”

“Where?”

“In Elena’s office.”

Stallone waited.

Claire continued.

“She saw documents about a property transfer.”

“What property?”

“I do not know.”

“Then why does it matter?”

“Because Elena told people she had no reason to contact you.”

Claire pointed at the papers.

“But the documents had your family name on them.”

Stallone felt something shift.

Not a conclusion.

A possibility.

“What family name?”

Claire hesitated.

“Your daughter’s.”

The room became quieter.

Stallone stared at the envelope.

His daughter’s name was something he rarely heard anymore.

Not because he forgot her.

Because hearing it reminded him of every year he could not change.

“What exactly did the documents say?”

“I only saw part of them.”

“That is not enough.”

“No.”

Claire looked directly at him.

“But it was enough for Elena to panic when she realized someone had seen them.”

Stallone leaned back.

“Why would she panic?”

“Because whatever was in that folder mattered more than the custody plan.”

The sentence followed him after he left.

He did not call Marcus immediately.

He needed to think.

The old part of him wanted to move fast.

The older part of him knew speed could destroy evidence.

When he returned home, Mia was sitting at the kitchen table wearing a sweater that was too large for her.

Rosa had bought it years ago for another child who never visited.

Mia liked it because it had pockets.

“What are you carrying?”

She looked up.

“Important things.”

Stallone smiled.

“What kind of important things?”

She reached into the pocket and pulled out a small collection of objects.

A smooth stone.

A broken crayon.

A piece of ribbon.

A tiny plastic animal missing one leg.

Stallone looked at the collection.

“Why do you keep these?”

She shrugged.

“Because they are mine.”

There was no deeper explanation.

No hidden meaning.

Just a child wanting something in a world where people had taken too much from her.

He sat beside her.

“That is a good reason.”

Mia pushed the plastic animal toward him.

“You can have this.”

Stallone looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because you look sad.”

The honesty made him laugh softly.

“I look sad?”

She nodded.

“Your face does this.”

She pressed her eyebrows together dramatically.

For a second, he forgot everything.

The investigation.

Elena.

The documents.

The old regrets.

Then his phone rang.

Marcus.

Stallone answered.

“We found something.”

The tone told him it was serious.

“What?”

“The property documents.”

Stallone stood.

“Where did you get them?”

“From a storage account connected to Elena.”

“Explain.”

Marcus paused.

“It appears she had access to records involving your late daughter’s estate.”

Stallone felt his chest tighten.

“My daughter’s estate was settled.”

“That is what everyone believed.”

“Everyone?”

“Yes.”

The answer bothered him.

“What does that mean?”

“It means someone changed paperwork after the settlement.”

The kitchen suddenly felt colder.

Mia continued coloring, unaware of the conversation.

Stallone lowered his voice.

“Who changed it?”

“We are still confirming.”

“Marcus.”

“I know.”

The attorney sounded frustrated.

“But this involves older documents, private transfers, and signatures that need verification.”

Stallone closed his eyes.

“Could Elena do this alone?”

“No.”

That single word carried more weight than a paragraph.

“Who helped her?”

“We are investigating.”

Stallone looked at Mia.

At the child whose mother had left behind a history nobody had protected.

A history that someone had tried to use.

“When?”

“As soon as possible.”

“No.”

Marcus became silent.

“I need answers before Elena knows we found this.”

“That may already be impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because someone accessed the same records this morning.”

Stallone’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Someone knew we were looking.”

After the call ended, he remained standing.

Mia looked up.

“Grandpa?”

He forced himself to soften his expression.

“Yes?”

“Are you leaving?”

The question stopped him.

Not because it was complicated.

Because it was simple.

She had already experienced people leaving.

He walked over and sat beside her.

“No.”

“You promise?”

Stallone looked at her.

Promises were dangerous.

He had broken too many.

But this one mattered.

“Yes.”

Mia nodded and returned to her drawing.

Outside, a car passed slowly along the road.

It did not stop.

May you like

It did not turn around.

But Stallone noticed it.
