Chương 8

Claire’s eyes filled.
“I do not know.”
Vincent’s expression tightened slightly.
Not anger.
Concern.
There was a difference.
“Open the door.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because I do not know what happens after.”
The answer was honest.
And that honesty frightened Daniel more than another lie would have.
For years, Claire had protected herself with explanations.
Now there was nothing between her and the consequences.
The person outside knocked again.
Not impatient.
Not aggressive.
Almost careful.
“Claire.”
The voice came through the door.
“I know you are there.”
Lily moved closer to Vincent.
He lowered his hand to hers.
The small fingers wrapped around two of his.
Daniel noticed.
He noticed everything now.
Every small movement.
Every hesitation.
Every sign that he had ignored before.
Claire stepped closer to the door.
Her breathing changed.
Daniel saw fear.
Not the fear of being exposed.
Something older.
Something connected to a wound that had never healed.
“I need to speak to her alone,” Claire said.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“She is my daughter.”
“And Lily is mine.”
The words came out before he could soften them.
The silence afterward showed everyone how much they meant.
Claire looked hurt.
Not because he was wrong.
Because she understood.
Vincent stepped between the two of them.
“Nobody goes into this alone.”
Claire looked at him.
“You think you can control every situation.”
“No.”
Vincent glanced toward Lily.
“I think children should not pay for adult mistakes.”
The statement quieted her.
Daniel opened the door.
Only a few inches at first.
Enough to see the person outside.
A woman stood on the front steps.
She looked to be in her late twenties.
Her hair was pulled back loosely.
Her clothes were simple.
Not expensive.
Not carefully chosen.
She looked like someone who had spent a long time preparing for this moment and still arrived unprepared.
Her eyes moved past Daniel.
They found Claire.
Neither woman spoke.
For several seconds, they simply looked at each other.
Then Emily started crying.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
The kind of crying people did when they had already spent years using all their strength not to cry.
Claire covered her mouth.
“I thought you were safe.”
Emily laughed softly through tears.
“That is what everyone kept telling me.”
Claire stepped backward.
Daniel looked between them.
“Someone needs to explain.”
Emily looked at him.
“You are Daniel.”
He stiffened.
“How do you know me?”
Emily looked at Claire.
“She talked about you.”
Claire’s face changed.
“I did?”
“When I was trying to find you.”
The words were gentle.
But they carried pain.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“You knew she was looking?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
Emily stepped inside slowly after Daniel moved aside.
She did not act like she belonged there.
She acted like someone entering a place where she was not sure she had permission to breathe.
Her eyes moved around the mansion.
The expensive furniture.
The polished floors.
The family photographs on the walls.
Then she saw one picture of Lily.
She stopped.
“That is her.”
Daniel immediately moved slightly in front of the frame.
“Who are you?”
Emily looked at him.
“I am her sister.”
Lily looked up.
The word caught her attention.
“Sister?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Vincent knelt beside her.
“Not everything adults say is easy to understand.”
Lily looked confused.
“Is she family?”
Vincent glanced at Emily.
Then Claire.
Then Daniel.
“That is something we are going to figure out.”
Emily looked away.
The answer seemed to hurt.
Not because she wanted a different one.
Because she had spent years wanting a simple one.
Claire walked closer.
“Why did you come here?”
Emily wiped her face.
“Because I was running out of time.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“From what?”
Emily looked at Claire.
“From him.”
The room became quiet.
“Who?”
Emily looked at Vincent.
Then Daniel.
“The man who has been sending you messages.”
Claire went pale.
Daniel turned toward her.
“You know who it is?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
Emily stepped closer.
“You do.”
“I don’t.”
“You do.”
The two women stared at each other.
There was history there.
Not the kind created by years together.
The kind created by years apart.
“You remember the lawyer,” Emily said.
Claire froze.
Daniel noticed.
“What lawyer?”
Emily looked at him.
“The man who handled the adoption.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Emily.”
“No.”
Emily’s voice became firmer.
“I spent twenty years being quiet because everyone told me that was the right thing to do.”
Her hands trembled.
“I was a baby.”
Claire looked devastated.
“I know.”
“No.”
Emily shook her head.
“You know now.”
The words were not cruel.
They were tired.
Daniel watched Claire.
For the first time, he saw not only the person who had hidden things from him.
He saw someone who had been running from a past that had never stopped following her.
“Where were you all these years?” Daniel asked.
Emily looked at him.
“Moving.”
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
“My adoptive parents changed states twice because they were afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
Emily looked at Claire.
“People who wanted money.”
Vincent’s attention sharpened.
“Explain.”
Emily looked at him.
“The adoption agency had problems.”
“What kind of problems?”
“Records disappeared.”
Nobody spoke.
“Families were pressured.”
Claire whispered.
“No.”
Emily looked at her.
“Yes.”
Daniel looked confused.
“What are you saying?”
Emily took a breath.
“I am saying someone built a business around making people disappear.”
The statement sounded impossible.
But the fear on her face made it believable.
Vincent moved toward the table.
He picked up the phone with the threatening messages.
“Who knows about this?”
Emily looked at him.
“More people than should.”
“And who is the person outside all of this?”
Emily looked toward the front door.
The woman who had arrived alone.
The person who had somehow known about Lily.
The person who had pushed Claire into fear.
“He is not outside.”
May you like
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at her.
