Chương 5

“That sounds normal.”

“It is.”

Marcus sat down.

“But I might not have a job after tomorrow.”

The words were said quietly.

Almost casually.

But the way his fingers pressed against his coffee cup revealed the fear underneath.

“What happened?”

Marcus stared at the courtyard.

“I made mistakes.”

“What kind?”

“The kind where you tell yourself you are too busy to fix them.”

Stallone waited.

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

He was not used to confessing things.

Especially to someone he had spent years trying to prove wrong.

“I missed deadlines.”

“That happens.”

“I lied about why.”

“That is worse.”

Marcus nodded.

“I know.”

The honesty stopped the argument before it started.

Stallone leaned back.

“What are you going to do?”

Marcus gave a tired laugh.

“I was hoping you would say something older and wiser.”

“I am asking what you are going to do.”

Marcus looked at him.

“You really are not going to make this easy.”

“No.”

A small smile appeared.

“You never let me.”

“That is because you usually needed someone to.”

Marcus looked away.

The comment bothered him.

Then, slowly, he accepted it.

“My boss gave me one chance.”

“What kind?”

“I have to explain everything.”

“Then explain everything.”

“It could cost me.”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked frustrated.

“You say that like it is simple.”

“It is not simple.”

Stallone pointed toward the house.

“But hiding things does not make them smaller.”

Marcus became quiet.

That was the sentence he needed.

Not because it solved anything.

Because it forced him to stop pretending.

Inside, Eleanor called them for dinner.

Nobody moved immediately.

The invitation itself felt strange.

Like something that had not happened naturally in a long time.

They ate together at the kitchen table.

There were no speeches.

No emotional declarations.

Just food.

A bowl of pasta.

Bread.

A salad nobody finished.

Lily dropped a piece of carrot on the floor and blamed gravity.

Marcus laughed.

Eleanor corrected her.

“Gravity did not put the carrot there.”

“It did.”

“It did not.”

“It did because it fell.”

Stallone looked at Marcus.

“She has a strong argument.”

Marcus smiled.

“You are taking her side?”

“I am respecting her legal strategy.”

Eleanor shook her head.

For a moment, the family looked almost ordinary.

That was dangerous.

Because ordinary moments could make people believe change had already happened.

It had not.

One good day did not erase months of damage.

Everyone at the table knew that.

But one good day could prove another one was possible.

After dinner, Marcus helped Lily brush her teeth.

Stallone stood in the hallway and listened.

The sound was strangely unfamiliar.

His son-in-law telling a silly story about a toothbrush fighting a monster.

Lily laughing.

Water running.

A normal family moment.

A moment he had almost convinced himself he did not need.

When Marcus came back, he found Stallone waiting.

“She likes you,” Stallone said.

Marcus leaned against the wall.

“She should.”

The answer was confident.

Then his expression changed.

“I mean, I hope she does.”

Stallone looked at him.

“You are scared.”

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.”

The honesty was almost uncomfortable.

“She is three years old, and sometimes I look at her and wonder if I am already too late.”

Stallone did not give him a comforting answer.

He knew some fears were not removed by words.

“You are too late for yesterday.”

Marcus looked at him.

“But not tomorrow.”

They stood there quietly.

Two men who had spent years fighting over who was stronger.

Neither of them had realized strength might have been admitting they were afraid.

The next morning, Stallone left early.

He did not tell anyone he was going.

That was an old habit.

Leaving before people could decide whether they wanted him there.

But this time, Lily found him.

She stood at the front door wearing pajamas and holding her stuffed rabbit.

“Where are you going?”

He looked at her.

“Home.”

She frowned.

“This is home.”

The words stopped him.

Because she was right.

Home was not a place he owned.

It was not the house he had built.

It was not the apartment where he spent his lonely nights.

It was wherever people still wanted him to return.

“I have to go handle something.”

“Will you come back?”

A year ago, he might have answered without thinking.

He might have promised.

He might have made the mistake of believing promises were enough.

This time, he crouched down.

Lily looked disappointed.

“You said yes before.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“Why not now?”

Because adults made promises when they wanted to feel better.

Because he had broken enough of them.

Because he finally understood that showing up mattered more than saying he would.

“Because I want to tell you the truth.”

She thought about it.

Then she hugged him.

“Okay.”

The simplicity of forgiveness from a child was almost unbearable.

But Stallone knew it was not the same as forgetting.

Children forgave because they still believed people could become better.

Adults often stopped because they had seen too much evidence against it.

At the gate, Marcus joined him.

“You really leaving?”

“For a few hours.”

“You coming back?”

Stallone looked at him.

The question carried more meaning than the words.

“Yes.”

Marcus nodded.

“Good.”

Neither man said anything else.

They did not need to.

The gate closed behind Stallone.

He walked toward his car.

The neighborhood looked the same.

Cars parked along the street.

People walking dogs.

A man carrying groceries.

A woman watering plants.

Nothing had changed.

Except him.

His phone buzzed before he reached the car.

The lawyer.

He answered.

“Tell me.”

The voice on the other end began explaining the problem.

A dispute.

Old paperwork.

A decision made years ago.

Something he had ignored because he thought money could absorb mistakes.

This time, he listened.

Not because he wanted control.

Because he understood consequences.

When the call ended, he sat in the driver’s seat for a long time.

The old instinct was still there.

Fix everything.

May you like

Push harder.

Make people listen.
