Chương 2

She had not expected Daniel to remain calm.

“You think you can just walk in here and fix everything?”

Caroline asked.

Daniel stepped closer.

“No.”

He stopped a few feet away.

“I think I can stop one thing.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“And what is that?”

Daniel looked at the shoes in her hand.

“The idea that this child has nobody.”

Caroline laughed once, without humor.

“You are being dramatic.”

Daniel’s face did not change.

Then he moved.

The action was sudden, but not chaotic.

His hand crossed the space between them and struck Caroline across the cheek.

The sound cut through the courtyard.

Caroline stumbled backward, shocked more than hurt, her balance failing as she collided with the garden chair behind her.

The chair scraped against the stone before catching her weight.

Michael froze.

The two bodyguards remained still.

They had not moved toward Daniel.

They had not moved toward Caroline.

They simply watched.

Daniel had spent a lifetime understanding the difference between chaos and control.

He turned toward Michael.

“You watched.”

Michael’s face flushed.

“You hit my wife.”

“You watched.”

The accusation was not loud.

That made it harder to answer.

Michael stepped forward.

“You don’t get to come here and act like you own my family.”

Daniel stared at him.

“No.”

A pause followed.

“You did that yourself.”

Michael’s anger finally overcame his hesitation.

He rushed forward.

It was not a calculated move.

It was the kind of decision made by pride before the mind could catch up.

His fist came forward.

Daniel shifted slightly.

Years of experience showed in the smallest movement.

Michael’s punch missed its target.

Daniel stepped inside the space Michael had opened.

Then his fist connected.

Michael stumbled backward.

The impact sent him into the wooden outdoor table.

The table tipped after his weight struck it.

A glass left on top rolled away and shattered against the stone.

Michael fell beside it, unconscious.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The mansion seemed strangely quiet.

Daniel looked down at his son-in-law.

There was no satisfaction in his face.

Only disappointment.

Then he turned away.

Lily was still standing where they had left her.

Her eyes were fixed on him.

Not with fear.

With hope.

Daniel walked over slowly and lowered himself until he was at her height.

“Come here, sweetheart.”

Lily moved immediately.

She wrapped her tiny arms around him.

But Daniel gently pulled back.

“First, your shoes.”

He picked them up from Caroline’s abandoned grip.

The little shoes were wet.

He wiped them carefully with the edge of his jacket before placing them back on Lily’s feet.

His hands, the same hands that had frightened powerful men for decades, moved with incredible patience.

Lily watched him quietly.

“You came,” she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“I always will.”

He lifted her into his arms.

She rested her head against his shoulder as if she had been holding that position in her heart for a long time.

Behind him, the two bodyguards stood silently.

Caroline sat in the garden chair, stunned.

Michael remained on the ground as the first signs of movement returned to his fingers.

Daniel looked toward the mansion that his granddaughter had once called home.

Then he spoke.

“No one punishes my granddaughter like this.”

The words remained in the air long after Daniel stopped speaking.

Lily held onto his jacket with both hands, her fingers curled tightly into the fabric as if letting go might send her back to the cold patio.

Daniel felt the small movement of her breathing against his chest.

She was trying very hard not to cry again.

That was the part that bothered him most.

Not the bruises that were not there.

Not the fear that had passed through her eyes.

It was the way she had already learned to control her own sadness so nobody would become angry at her for having it.

“Call an ambulance,” Caroline finally said from the chair.

Her voice shook with anger more than pain.

Michael’s bodyguard-like security staff, hired for the estate but currently standing near the entrance, looked uncertainly toward Daniel.

Nobody moved until Daniel gave a small nod.

“Make the call.”

The employees scattered quickly.

The mansion, which had always operated according to Michael’s schedules and instructions, suddenly felt like a place where nobody knew who was in charge.

Caroline pressed her fingers against her cheek.

“You attacked me in front of my daughter.”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

His voice stayed even.

“I stopped you in front of my granddaughter.”

Caroline looked away.

The distinction irritated her because she knew exactly what he meant.

Michael slowly opened his eyes.

For a few seconds, he stared at the sky above him as if he had forgotten where he was.

Then the pain in his shoulder returned and reality followed.

“What happened?”

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence told him more than words could have.

His eyes moved toward Daniel.

Then toward Lily.

Then toward Caroline sitting in the chair.

A flash of embarrassment crossed his face.

Not guilt.

Not yet.

Embarrassment.

He cared about how the scene looked before he cared about what the scene meant.

Daniel noticed.

That was the hardest part.

He had spent years hoping Michael’s arrogance was just immaturity.

He had hoped that responsibility would soften him.

Instead, responsibility had only given him more things to protect his ego with.

“Dad,” Michael said quietly.

The old word surprised Daniel.

Michael had called him that only a handful of times in the last decade.

Usually when he wanted something.

Usually when he needed approval.

Daniel looked at him.

“Do not.”

Michael swallowed.

“I need to explain.”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Michael pushed himself up on one elbow.

“You don’t know what happened.”

Daniel looked down at Lily.

The little girl had buried her face against his shoulder.

“You are right.”

A pause.

“I do not know everything.”

Michael relaxed slightly.

Then Daniel continued.

“But I know enough.”

May you like

The ambulance arrived twenty minutes later.

The paramedics checked Michael’s condition and determined he had no serious injuries, only a concussion risk and a badly bruised shoulder.
