Chương 1

"The little girl’s scream had already filled the mansion garden before anyone inside the house decided to listen.
Three-year-old Lily Carter sat curled against the stone wall at the farthest edge of the backyard, where the last garden light stopped reaching and the shadows swallowed everything around her.
Her small hands gripped the front of her cardigan while tears ran down her cheeks and soaked the collar of her pale dress.
“Grandpa,” she cried again, her voice breaking into a frightened whisper after the louder screams failed to bring anyone to her.
The woman standing several yards away did not move.
Eleanor Carter, sixty-five years old and perfectly composed in her expensive gray coat, only watched the child with a cold expression that made the warm summer evening feel colder.
“Stay there until you stop crying,” Eleanor said.
Lily looked toward her grandmother as if waiting for the words to change into something kinder.
They did not.
Near the outdoor table, Eleanor’s son Michael leaned against the fence and gave a quiet laugh.
He was almost forty, but the amusement on his face looked strangely childish.
“You keep doing that, Grandma,” he said to Eleanor.
“You keep making her think someone is coming to save her.”
Eleanor adjusted the sleeve of her coat.
“She needs discipline.”
“She needs attention,” Michael replied.
“She gets plenty of attention,” Eleanor said.
Michael looked toward the dark corner where Lily was shaking.
“Apparently not.”
The comment sounded careless, but there was something sharper underneath it.
Michael had spent years pretending he was not angry about the family money, the family name, and the fact that his father had never trusted him with either.
Lily was the easiest person to blame because she was too young to fight back.
Eleanor reached toward the nearby garden lamp switch installed beside the patio door.
The closest light near Lily’s corner went out.
The darkness became complete.
Lily gasped.
For a moment, even Michael stopped smiling.
Then Lily screamed.
“GRANDPA!”
The sound traveled across the empty lawn and into the silent mansion behind them.
Inside the house, several employees paused.
A glass stopped halfway toward a mouth.
A conversation ended in the middle of a sentence.
Everyone in the Carter estate knew one thing about Lily’s grandfather.
Frank Stallone did not ignore a cry for help.
The main gate opened before anyone could see who had pressed the security code.
The heavy iron doors moved slowly, revealing two black vehicles rolling onto the gravel driveway.
Frank Stallone stepped out of the first car wearing a white shirt beneath a black suit and a dark coat despite the warm evening air.
Age had taken some speed from him, but it had not taken the weight from his presence.
Two bodyguards followed behind him.
They did not speak.
They did not need to.
One of them immediately walked toward the control panel near the patio and turned the garden lights back on.
The sudden brightness made Lily cover her eyes.
Frank’s attention never left her.
He looked at the trembling child first.
Then he looked at Eleanor.
Then Michael.
The silence between them lasted only a few seconds, but nobody in the garden confused it for calm.
“Frank,” Eleanor said.
Her voice was steady, but her fingers tightened around the edge of her coat.
“You’re home early.”
Frank did not answer immediately.
He walked closer.
Lily watched him approach with the desperate hope of someone who had been waiting for a familiar face for much longer than a few minutes.
“What happened?” Frank asked.
Eleanor lifted her chin.
“She’s afraid because she’s spoiled.”
The words landed harder than shouting would have.
Frank stopped walking.
Michael looked away.
He had expected anger.
He had not expected disappointment.
Frank’s expression changed slightly.
Not much.
Just enough for everyone who knew him to understand that something had crossed a line.
“Say that again,” he said.
Eleanor took a breath.
“She cries every time she doesn’t get what she wants.”
“She’s three years old.”
“She needs to learn.”
Frank stared at her.
For years, people had feared Frank Stallone because of rumors, old stories, and the power attached to his name.
But the people closest to him knew the thing that could make him dangerous was not anger.
It was restraint.
The slap came once.
Sharp.
Immediate.
Eleanor stumbled backward from the shock and fell into the garden chair behind her.
The chair scraped across the stone surface before stopping.
Nobody moved.
Frank had never raised a hand toward her before.
Not once.
Eleanor touched her cheek with a stunned expression, less from pain than disbelief.
“You struck me,” she whispered.
Frank looked at the woman he had once trusted to protect his family.
“You frightened a child who called for help.”
Michael stepped forward.
“You don’t get to come in here and act like you’re some kind of hero.”
Frank turned toward him.
Michael’s confidence returned quickly because it was easier to attack than to admit fear.
“You’ve been gone for years,” Michael said.
“You don’t know what happens here.”
Frank studied him.
“Then tell me.”
Michael opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The backyard suddenly felt smaller.
The table.
The chairs.
The fence.
The dark corner where Lily had been left alone.
Everything was still there.
But the power inside the space had changed.
Michael moved first.
He rushed forward with anger replacing judgment.
The punch from Frank came before anyone could stop him.
Michael flew backward into the outdoor table, sending plates and glasses crashing onto the ground.
The table shook beneath him before he collapsed against it.
The bodyguards did not react.
They had seen enough of the world to know that some fights ended before they truly began.
Frank looked down at Michael.
“You confused cruelty with authority.”
Michael tried to answer, but only a rough breath escaped him.
The mansion doors opened behind them.

Several employees stood there, unsure whether they should step outside or disappear.
Nobody wanted to be the first person to choose.
